Yes, there is a lot of stuff in these guides, but there is much to make you consider as well. This is a collection of gift guides. I would recommend Uncle Mark's guide first because it is relatively short and has ideas for doing as well as buying. The rest? Well, Christmas isn't the only time of year for giving.

I have seen this list floating around. I usually don't go for list posts, but it is useful to see what is trending and what others are using. For example, I am seeing Goodreads mentioned as a Swiss Army knife for productivity. I haven't used it in awhile so now I will probably update it and take another look. Yes, I take my marching orders from blogs. What of it?

It is not too early to think about National Poetry Month and how you might personally and pedagogically engage your fellow poetic travelers. I have a folder with all of these apps to share with my students during the month of April.
I am not sure the poet's pad was worth it at $9.99 (is one good poem worth $10 bucks to you?), but I know The Poetry App is worth installing (free) just fokr the great voices reading them including Bob Geldof, Dominic West, and Juliet Stevenson.

When I talk to folks about apps with less 'friction' this is a prime example. This app solves a simple problem: how do I get video online 'quick and dirty'? Of course, the bottleneck is upload speed but other than that this does the job and crosses over the no man's land between Google and Apple with nary a hitch. I am thinking of doing 'student' exit interviews at the end of each class. Or I am thinking about getting them to interview each other and send to a class YouTube account. This app has some serious 'reverb' in my head and I know I will use it or something like it to conncect students to each other and the class in what will predicatable be unexpected ways.

This looks like a way to manage class workflow through the iPad. All of these tools require varying levels of change. It is up to you as a teacher to decide how much or how little disruption you can address in any given semester or week within a semester. Your call as always (YCAA) and your mileage may vary (YMMV), but give tools like this a try. I know there is an "ante up" of time and effort for anything like this, but much good can come from these investments that are not immediately apparent. Steven Johnson calls these "adjacent possibles".

I am listening to the NYT's "Science Times" on this about stone age empathy. I listen to this regularly on TuneIn Radio via home wifi and occasionally over cell. This supplements Spotify and XM in my home but I could see replacing those with this. Enjoy.

Some fun for Christmas Day? Disagreeable brother/uncles and sister/aunts who love Justice Scalia and actually enjoy chatting about Catholic orthodoxy? Play a little death speed metal to their talking heads or perhaps some of Zappa's "Peaches en Regalia"? We shall see.
