Digital Literacy
The ability to understand and use digital technology in order to to find information across multiple digital formats.
Digital Citizenship
A set of behaviors that are considered the norm with the use of technology in order to use technology in order to positively contribute to society.
Digital Identity
An individual, organization, or device's identity in cyberspace. Examples include an IP address, email address, social networking profiles, websites, etc.
Digital identity is made up of elements that fall into four categories (source: Lionel Maurel / Fadhila Brahimi):
"A digital identity contains data that uniquely describes a person or thing (called the subject or entity in the language of digital identity) but also contains information about the subject's relationships to other entities" (pg 8)
Digital Security
Protecting yourself and your identity on the internet by maintaining strong passwords as well as using updated anti-virus software.
Digital security gives individuals the freedom to embrace the digital lifestyle - to confidently engage in everyday interactions across all digital devices. Digital security affects all aspects of the digital lifestyle [sic], which among others, comprises computers and the internet [sic] telecommunications, financial transaction, healthcare, and secure access" (pg 1).
"Digital Security is protecting yourself on the Internet" through "Protecting Identity," "Creating Strong Passwords," "Virus and Malware Protection," and "Surge Protectors and other devices to secure your hardware"
Critical Thinking
The act of using analysis and interpretation in order to effectively reason and make decisions.
"Active, persistent, and careful consideration of a belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds which support it and the further conclusions to which it tends. (Dewey, 1909, p. 9)" (pg 2)
"(1) an attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one's experience; (2) knowledge of the methods of logical enquiry and reasoning; and (3) some skill in applying those methods. Critical thinking calls for a persistent effort to examine any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the evidence that supports it and the further conclusions to which it tends. (Glaser, 1941, p. 5)" (pg 3)
"Critical thinking is reasonable, reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe or do. (Cf Norris and Ennis, 1989)" (pg 4).
"Critical thinking is that mode of thinking - about and subject content or problem - in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structure inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them. (Paul, Fisher and Nosich, 1993, p. 4)" (pg 4-5).
Plagiarism
The act of attempting to pass someone else's work off as one's own.
"In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else's language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source" (pg 1).
Digital Rights and Responsibilities
One's privilege to use any and all type of technology as long as it follows expected behavioral norms.
