• This kid was so inspiring that, even in the midst of battle, his parents launched CookiesForKidsCancer.org with the Miracle of the World's Biggest Bake Sale - selling 96,000 cookies in 2007 - and they haven't stopped yet.

  They're trying to raise $10 million for pediatric cancer research with online cookie orders and bake sales. They've taken in $2.5 million, but family friend Fraya Berg said: "We're going to do it. We're going to raise the $10 million."

• "Kids with cancer don't make headlines," her son's pediatrician told her. So Ms. Witt, whose day job is public-relations director for Oxo in Manhattan, went into baking mode. With the help of 200-some volunteers, she produced about 96,000 cookies for her first bake sale for cancer research. She netted $420,000.

   

  "I wanted to challenge myself," she said. "I wasn't looking to raise just a couple hundred dollars."

   

  The following year, Ms. Witt launched her nonprofit, Cookies for Kids' Cancer, which helps companies raise funds through sports tournaments, fun runs and bake sales. More than once, the group has been the beneficiary of a baker trying to break a Guinness world record. In the past five years, Ms. Witt has raised $8 million.
