• Apple has finally added the ability to use custom tones for texts, new voicemails, new e-mail, sent email, sent tweets, calendar alerts, and reminder alerts – just about any alert style.

• Another one of my personal favorites, Apple added a built-in dictionary to iOS 5. To use it, tap and hold to select a word (anywhere this is possible) and tap ‘Define’ and the dictionary slides up.
• r. Buried inside the Settings.app go to Keyboard > Shortcuts to see what’s there or ‘Add New Shortcut…’ Type a phrase and your shortcut keys. Works great for email, popular URLs, names, etc.
• Here’s a tip if you don’t use Ping that much or care about its notifications. Open Settings.app > General > Restrictions (create passkey if needed) and toggle the Ping switch to off.

  While reading an email you can swipe right to open a list of messages and swipe left to bring you back to the open email message again. If you have multiple email accounts (iCloud, Gmail, Hotmail) configured in Mail.app, you can swipe left or right from the mailboxes folder list and it will take you to another account’s mailbox.

• The new figures from AnandTech show the iPhone 4S with an overall Geekbench score of 623, easily besting the 800MHz A4 CPU found in the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S processor is clocked slower than the 1GHz A5 CPu found in the iPad 2, which earned a score of 751.
• And in terms of its graphics processing capabilities, the iPhone 4S lived up to claims of being seven times faster than the iPhone 4. In one test, the iPhone 4S earned a score of 73.1 while the iPhone 4 took 11.2, and in another the iPhone 4S clocked a score of 122.7, compared to 15.3 for the iPhone 4.

    How many people with Android use calendar and all the rest?
• In fact, as Cult of Mac and The Next Web summarize, traffic to Apple was so high that broader Internet infrastructure was even experiencing difficulties under the load. In particular, one Internet exchange point in London saw its traffic jump by 50% as iOS 5 became available.

  The traffic at the LONAP (LONAP is a London Neutral Internet Exchange Point where Internet and content providers exchange traffic) increased from a normal peak of around 18Gb/s to around 28Gb/s.

    Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week. But I've found some comfort in the extraordinary number of tributes and condolences from people all over the world who were touched by Steve and his genius. And I've found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve.

   

    Although many of our hearts are still heavy, we are planning a celebration of his life for Apple employees to take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place. The celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 10am in the outdoor amphitheater on the Infinite Loop campus. We'll have more details on AppleWeb closer to the date, including arrangements for employees outside of Cupertino.

• The injunction would essentially force the company to miss the holiday sales period and make the Galaxy Tab 10.1 relatively outdated by the time the injunction could be lifted through a full hearing on the matter.
