Canadiana.org is a national group consisting of academic and public libraries and government departments such as Statistics Canada, who work together to create, present and manage Canadian online content. Canadiana.org acts as an overall coordinator for digitization projects and access to collections. One of the services provided by Canadiana is access to Early Canadiana Online, a searchable online catalogue of pre-1900 microfilmed documents and a digital library of over 2.3 million pages of documents and publications. Not all items in the catalogue have been digitized and some ECO content is only available to registered ECO members. But with new material digitized all the time this is a fast-growing reference collection for historians. And in March 2007 Canadiana.org formed a partnership with Ancestry.ca to bring online nearly 300 years of early Canadian historical documents dating back to the 1600s.
In May 2004 the National Archives and the National Library of Canada merged to become Library and Archives Canada (LAC) which resulted in a single website linking to resources from both institutions. LAC is providing more and more archival and historical material online in an effort to provide Canadians with access to their national heritage. Another resource hosted by the LAC is a site dedicated to information on Canada's Confederation.
