Suzanne Pinckney's List: Department Stores

    • policy not to obtain paper fiber from old-growth forests or forests of exceptional conservation value,
    • We prefer suppliers that take an ecosystem-based approach to managing forestlands and that protect and promote ecosystem values on their property, as well as the properties they operate on or source from. We prefer suppliers who maintain water quality, promote natural habitat diversity, protect special areas such as endangered species habitats, and address aesthetic and recreational considerations.

At Saks Incorporated, we understand that energy efficiency is not only good for the bottom line, but that it also helps to protect our environment. We know that even a small reduction in our consumption could prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 1,000 cars off the road.

We partner with the EPA's ENERGY STAR Buildings and Green Lights Partnership to eliminate energy inefficiencies in our properties. Together, we have made significant investments in energy management systems with more efficient lighting and air conditioning upgrades at most of our properties. We’ve even participated in programs with local utilities to reduce our energy use during peak times to prevent blackouts.

Saks Incorporated was one of the first retailers to adopt a higher efficiency halogen lamp which reduced energy consumption by 10% without reducing light output or lamp life. Now, we are moving to the latest generation of high-efficiency fluorescent lighting.

We are taking steps to further optimize our energy usage, and will be testing new technologies that reduce the energy usage of our elevators and escalators. We are also exploring emerging technologies that may allow us to produce our own electricity and further reduce our energy consumptio

Rainforest Relief won a major battle in its efforts to protect endangered rainforests by securing an agreement with Kmart to end its sale of Martha Stewart outdoor furniture made of Nyatoh tropical hardwood. Sears, which is now owned by Kmart Corporation, has made no such commitment, which has sparked some concern. Rainforest Relief’s Tim Keating explained that the organization may decide to take action against Sears if it continues to sell outdoor furniture produced with wood products, such as Nyatoh, originating from endangered forest areas.

While retailers face fewer environmental challenges than do most manufacturing companies, Macy's, Inc. remains committed to protecting the environment and the quality of life in the communities where we live and work. From recycling programs that are in place throughout the company to capital expenditures for energy-efficiency upgrades in stores and facilities, Macy's, Inc. is engaged in numerous ongoing environmental conservation efforts nationwide. Outside experts are hired to conduct annual environmental audits to ensure that our facilities are in compliance with local, state and federal environmental laws. In addition, the company promotes the purchase and use of recycled materials whenever possible; it routinely monitors and regulates indoor air quality standards, maintains policies to ensure compliance with prohibitions against the use of ozone-depleting substances, and consistently employs strict procedures for the storage, handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
