Corporate social responsibility, once a do-gooding sideshow, is now seen as mainstream.
Michael Strong, founder of innovative charter schools, and John Mackey, C.E.O. of Whole Foods, agree with Friedman, and have their own libertarian vision. They believe that entrepreneurs and “conscious capitalists,” not government, can solve the world’s problems, and they’ve founded an organization called Flow, Inc., to advance that vision.
In his new book Be the Solution, Strong describes the Flow vision and explains how liberated entrepreneurs in a free-market society can tackle such colossal problems as protecting the environment, eradicating poverty, and fixing the U.S. education system. Strong has agreed to answer a few of our questions about his new book, including his proposed wager with Columbia economist Jeffrey Sachs.
If you’ve made it this far, I suppose I should reward you with a reason for my attempt at commentary on topical Corporate Social Responsibility issues. I’ve spent nearly ten years immersed in trying to learn, motivate, inspire and deliver CSR / Corporate Citizenship / Ethical Business / plain old good management / Mickey Mouse / I don’t care what you call it, just do it, as a mainstream and routine, almost subconcious ethos.
After eight very long years making Everton Football Club a very respectable pillar of the community I decided I needed a bigger challenge! Within six months I had set up a CSR consultancy called Coethica, got married (and had a beautiful baby boy nine months and one day later thanks to Jack Daniels and the Best Man) and attended five funerals (three were younger than my mere 36 years, one was my Nan, 103 and the other my Father-In-Law).
