S Spaeth's List: Communications-Outreach

  • Nov 04, 10

The Alaska Fisheries Science Center dedicates one of their internships to support of outreach activities. This demonstrates how seriously they take the responsibility to communicate with multiple audiences about the value of their work.

    • Our communications goal is to inform the public about the science conducted to accomplish our agency's mission. This may sound simple, but it is in fact complex and challenging. We have multiple audiences, from fishermen to middle-school students to the general public, and we have multiple tools that we can use, from pod-casts to visual and written stories to educational presentations.

      • They support both the development of communication specialists and the infrastructure (newsletters, ...) for scientists to share their contributions to outreach:

    •  The intern will work with the communications team to create a suite of articles based on the science conducted at the AFSC. The articles will focus on "hot-topic" research being conducted at the Center. Examples of some topics are: ice-seal research in Alaska; challenges in assessing population size of marine animals or the importance of science in natural resource management. Articles will be created for a non-scientific audience and may include images, a slideshow or video. Project may require the intern to interview scientists and conduct scientific literature searches.

This article communicates outreach activities of NOAA scientists and illustrates one of the roles that interns can contribute to projects: photos and photo credits.

Kate interviewed Rosa and Natalie about their experiences as alum- and teacher-in-residence participating in the research on the NOAA vessel Oscar Dyson.

    • “The overarching goal of the research cruise is to study the effects of climate change on the Bering Sea ecosystem. This ecosystem involves everything from the phytoplankton, and the nutrients they provide to zooplankton, to the fish that eat the zooplankton, all the way up to the bigger fish who eat the forage fish (filter feeders who eat zooplankton).”
      • Some students who started work at CREA in Glenn Evans' biology class chose to extend their work in CREA's Summer Intern Program. These could become Capstone Projects, too. Students have completed the time-consumming part of the work. Can we find students who want to turn their work into Capstone Exemplars?

      • Note the parallels with research that MTA students are conducting at CREA:

    • helping individuals like Macke spread knowledge and enthusiasm about the environment.
      • Perhaps we can get Rosa to visit Mt Ararat students to help "spread knowledge and enthusiasm about the environment," too.

LimeSurvey supports efforts to expand Outreach. They designed this Project Idea for the 2010 Google Code-In to draw students into this facet of project activity.

    • Write an independant article about LimeSurvey on your blog. Explain what are advantages, what are disadavantages of the software - show how to create a first survey and also write about problems are on the way getting there. Motivate people to participate to help use make LimeSurvey better. The article should be in-depth and correct. It should help other to get hooked up without false promises.
