This website provides a great starting place to explore a variety of Public Domain websites. This would provide a good starting place for teachers to go to begin their quest for images or audio.
This site boasts "58,000 pieces of clip art and growing each week." Each clip art is in black and white and resemble pencil sketches so users looking for stunningly colorful images are looking in the wrong place on this site. However, the pencil sketches are amazingly detailed and the selection is extremely diverse. For instance, even a random search for "Alice in Wonderland" came back with a result. Due to the variety, this is a great site to go to for those hard to find images. Teachers and students are permitted to use up to 50 images in a project without receiving writte permission. However, all images used (especially on websites) are to be credited back to the creator.
This site contains a searchable database of thousands of sounds that could be added to media projects. For instance, when I search for "horn," 59 matches of different horns were returned to me. Users should note, though, that they need to go to this site with an idea of what they want. This site does not seem to offer any type of browseable archive.
This site offers a wide range of music that can be previewed, embedded, or downloaded directly from the site. Music is divided by composer, performer, instrument, period, and form. Because of these divisions, the music could be used to set the tone for a lesson, introduce a time period, or be added to a project as a music score.
This site contains 5,000 photos and 8,000 cliparts that are all public domain. Teachers and students who are searching for images for presentations, publications, or projects would find a large variety of choices on this site. My only concern is that this site contains a great deal of adverstising. It is very easy to accidentally click on one of the advertising links thinking that it is taking you to additional free images or the ones that you have been searching for. However, if the user is careful, the site has some really great images!
This site provides thousands of searchable pictures that are public domain and can be used for noncommmercial or commercial use. The images on this site are absolutely gorgeous. They would provide high-quality additions to any multi-media or print project. Since there is also a variety of backgrounds available, this would also be a good site to go to when looking for backgrounds for glogs.
