Michele Soderstrom's List: Art Lesson Plans

  • Feb 23, 13

This art lesson plan site can be used by teachers. Lessons can be modified or built upon. Grades, subjects, and art making mediums are categorized in the search function. Grades are k-12 and with college level art lesson plans. Newer plans added to the list are marked with an asterisk. Lessons are categorized for easier retrieval. Teachers can submit a lesson for inclusion here so that others may benefit.
I've used this site quite a bit and noticed that these lesson plans are for projects ranging from one day to 5 days long. In the classroom teachers can add these lesson plans to their notebooks and re-use.

    • The lessons section has experienced a massive overhaul. Lessons were categorized for easier retrieval.
    • In this section are hundreds of free art lessons from preschool through the college level.

Under the Learn tab there is a section for Teachers, k-12, and online activities. Destination Modern Art online activity features print, audio, lovely colorful graphics, soothing cheerful music, user controlled speed through the program, and supports ELL's. In the virtual museum tour the user clicks on images to see and hear tutorial of an artist. Storyboard tutorial shows graphics and explains what it is for and how to create one. Tutorial shows students how an animation is created. Site features wide collection of images, Red Studio for Teens where teens interview animators and artists.

I would use this in my classroom as part of an art lesson to teach art history and introduce students to their next project. Students could work in teams, independently, or teacher could present this as a class project, calling on students to choose which room they will virtually venture into next which relies on student voice. I would use Red Studio's interviews to show my students about careers in the arts.

Art lesson plans list subject areas, national and common core standards, objectives, art criticism and art history questions, duration, extensions, and links to many visuals related to lesson. Look under the Learn tab, then Educators. Their lesson plan formats make it easy for a non-art teacher to teach a successful art lesson plan in depth. Lesson plans are k-12.
I would use these lesson plans in the classroom to teach art history and art making. I would use the Curriculum Resources section to draw upon many printable resources which feature different time periods, cultures, and styles, all with art making activities and beautiful graphics. I would use these resources as printouts for Middle School or High School classroom wall hangings such as a timeline for the Art of Korea, or the Art of Renaissance Europe. I would use the Science and the Art of Islamic World Unit for integrated studies.

This is an inspirational art teaching site. Nancy Beal teaches at an elementary school in Lower Manhatten called Village Community School. I have enjoyed her book 'The Art of Teaching Art to Children in School and at Home'.

I would use this in my classroom when I need inspiration for additional art teaching ideas, motivational teacher talk, and to look for resources. Videos, graphics and documents on her site show students in action. This could be used as an introduction, for younger students, to their next art making activity. ELL students would benefit from the visuals of the art making activity.

Free site. Storyjumper is where students can make digital stories. Teaches say it makes their students loooove writing much more than using pencil and paper. Books can be shared online and can be printed for a price starting at $24.95 and bulk discount for school orders. Website has pages for teachers and parents.

I would use this in my classroom for students to create stories using creative writing skills in a fun way. I would use this for an art project by having an uploaded picture of Van Gogh that students dress up with the costume options and then create a story around the character, for example. One could use the template for making a treasure map or having food fun for a nutrition assignment. I would use this in the classroom for computer/creative writing time when I know the students will be occupied and working quietly.

This Museum offers art lessons based on their permanent collection of artwork. Click on Education Programs and then you can click on different Educator's Guide links to choose artwork of specific eras.

I would use this website to find new art lesson plans. Lesson plans have images of student work and are based on Georgia standards so they would have to be modified. I would use this website with students in the classroom to show them how cool museums can be and how many beautiful paintings exist in museums.
