scott klepesch's List: Design and creativity

    • We were looking for the newest developments in curriculum design, situating what we found in a wider context of social, communications and curriculum theory, and just put out a report.
    • He suggests that the structuring patterns of the Internet as it is developing in the era of social and participatory media is leading to a massive transformation of cultural, commercial and political life. Consequently, we are witnessing a “death of the centre” in contrast to the centralized structures that patterned the past:

Design thinking incorporates constituent or consumer insights in depth and rapid prototyping, all aimed at getting beyond the assumptions that block effective solutions. Design thinking—inherently optimistic, constructive, and experiential—addresses the needs of the people who will consume a product or service and the infrastructure that enables it.

"This spring Matthew Bebbington, a high school physical education teacher in the U.K., decided to find out. He organized a school-wide "Innovation Day" that let 80 students between the ages of 11-15 choose what and how to learn."

    • Bebbington writes on The Guardian’s Teacher Network blog that far from taking an extended recess the students "worked solidly for six hours, cross-pollinating across different projects, ages and abilities."
    • One student responded that he had discovered a preference for "longer time periods of project-based learning because it means you can spend longer planning it, thinking about it and concentrating on it so you can produce a better piece of work at the end of it all."

Today there are six workshops, almost all in low-income neighborhoods around California. The idea is to be the complete opposite of a big science museum.

"It's your own dream garage, in a sense," Sudran says. "Just a bunch of stuff you can play around with, without being nervous that the curator's gonna have a nervous breakdown. There are no curators."

    • In school, Sudran says, science had held no interest for him at all. But out in the real world, it turned out to be the thing he'd been missing all along.

"My life is immeasurably better since I got into science," Sudran says.

    • So Sudran got a college to donate some space and equipment. Pretty soon, a small nonprofit called the Community Science Workshop Network was born.

Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research in the area of biology, chemistry, engineering and/or physics. The independent study will culminate in a science fair project (SFP). Emphasis will be placed on experimental design and the discussion of measurable (quantifiable) data. There are basically four parts to the SFP:

    • What if we articulated the idea that if parents really want their kids prepared for anything, they need to be in classrooms where we’re focused on solving real and important problems, creating provocative and meaningful work, connecting to other teachers and students from around the world, and doing stuff that can only happen when a vibrant, engaged community of learners gets together to do real work?

    "
1- " According to John Maxwell in his book Thinking for a Change , creativity is not a skill or attribute, but a mindset that embraces a broad array of different things including ambiguity, learning, possibility, connecting, ideas, options, exploring gaps and inconsistencies, the offbeat, and failure. "

2- " The university of Michigan ' Critical and Creative Thinking Page at umich.edu sees critical thinking as " the process we use to reflect on, assess and judge the assumption underlying our own and others ideas and efforts : and creative thinking as " the process we use to develop ideas that are unique, useful and worthy of further elaboration".

3- here are two awesome definitions of creativity :
' Creativity is the joy of not knowing it all " Ernie Zelinski, Creativity expert.
' Creativity is intelligence having fun " John Maxwell, Leadership Author"

"When we explore the question “What is creativity?” from a thinking and learning point of view, an open and active mind is clearly required – one that can see new possibilities. But is there more to it than that? This post explores the variables that make up what we think of as “creativity.”"

    • John Maxwell in his book Thinking for a Change, creativity is not a single skill or attribute, but a mindset that embraces a broad array of different things including Ambiguity, Learning, Possibility, Connecting, Ideas, Options, Exploring Gaps and Inconsistencies, the Offbeat, and Failure.
    • We must foster intuition to anticipate changes before they occur; empathy to understand that which cannot clearly be expressed; wisdom to see the connection between apparently unrelated events; and creativity to discover new ways of defining problems, new rules that will make it possible to adapt to the unexpected.”

" If it's at times of megafailure that human organization needs radical ideas and thinkers, then to become one, seek the deeper roots of crisis. Humdrum collapses and workaday crashes can be solved by pruning the shoots — but historic crises, Great Resets, in Richard Florida's terms, require paradigm shifts: sets of ideas that challenge yesterday's cherished assumptions and beliefs. Like, for example, that the apex of human prosperity is churning out more, bigger, faster, cheaper, now."

    • My favourite example, though, is punk: a musical form that ear-splittingly shattered the leisure-suited conventions of the spread-collared bourgeoisie — that gave voice to the marginalized, powerless, and their dissatisfaction.

"Design Minds utilises design thinking to develop the capabilities of successful and creative 21st century citizens within existing education and learning benchmarks.

Design Minds achieves this by explaining design, inspiring through resources and empowering through design thinking toolkits. Design is presented as a process in its simplest form: inquire, ideate, implement and at each stage evaluate."

"Our Little Devices group at MIT has logged thousands of miles to find and empower individuals in places that simply cannot afford this spiral. Instead of charity and aid, they resort to invention. We call them “MacGyver nurses and doctors”: men and women with everyday medical inventions in hospital wards in some the poorest places in the world."

"At i.school, we foster innovative people who think outside the box and, therefore, discover, enhance, and realize new value. They grow with motivations, techniques and experiences to change, yielding them to take roles in pushing governments, businesses and academics not only in Japan, but also in Asia, and the world to innovate."

""One is considered stupid until proven creative." Armin Vit presents the case for stupidity. Instead of avoiding the stupid, we should embrace it, chase it and execute stupid ideas as often as possible. Thank you to Definition 6 for providing in-kind video editing services for TEDxAtlanta."
