Since 1990, Christopher Riopelle has served at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as Associate Curator of European Painting and Sculpture before 1900, and Associate Curator of the Rodin Museum of Philadelphia. Mr. Riopelle had studied at Carleton University, Ottawa; the University of Toronto; and The Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Before coming to Philadelphia, he was Assistant Curator for Paintings at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, New York University and the American College in Paris.

Philly mural project celebrates community

The project, the biggest in the 25-year history of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program, will be in the form of an extended love letter and will mark the first of the program's approximately 3,000 murals to consist of text only.

Although the new murals will consist of romantic messages, they will really be about local people's love of their neighborhood and their city, said Jane Golden, executive director of the program.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art recently received a $1.9-million challenge grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The funds will be used to endow a new senior-level scientist position within the museum's department of conservation as well as to support an existing senior conservation position and to purchase two state-of-the-art analytical instruments.

Minimalism: Art and Polemics in the Sixties

Back in 1994, curator Lynn Zelevansky noted that "Minimalism ... has a place in the second half of our century akin to the one held by Cubism in the first half." (1) Yet Minimalism has proven curiously hard to define. There is a short list of artists--Robert Morris, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre--whose early work, created and exhibited between 1961 and 1965, seems to announce the emergence of a distinctive new style. The problem is defining what these artists had in common and which other artists should be included with them. Until now, the critical literature on Minimalism has offered mostly unsatisfactory answers to these questions.
