SLASH was born in Hampstead (London), England on July 23, 1965, and he was raised in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, England. His given name is Saul Hudson. His mother was a Black American, and his father is a white Englishman. Both artistic parents worked in the entertainment field. His mother was a clothing designer for entertainers. She designed some of David Bowie's unforgettable costumes. His father provides art direction for record albums. Two notable clients are Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. On Friday, June 5, 2009, SLASH's mother Ola Hudson died of lung cancer in Los Angeles.
At age 11 SLASH moved to Los Angeles with his mother while his father remained based in England. Born in the UK, SLASH was an immigrant in the United States and was to remain one for many years. The family eventually lived together again in L.A. where SLASH had a rough transition to conservative Southern California. The long hair, jeans and t-shirts that he wore even then didn't exactly fit with the other kids. An outsider at school, he lived a bohemian life at home. Surrounded by artistic friends of his parents, SLASH grew accustomed to the moods and eccentricities of those in the music world. Frequent visitors at the Hudson household included Joni Mitchell, David Geffen, David Bowie, Ron Wood and Iggy Pop. SLASH has said that these surroundings prepared him for coping with the stress of the music industry, the conflict between artistry and business.
Born Saul Hudson, Slash was born in Hampstead, London. He had music connections at an early age because his parents both worked in the music industry. When he was 11, his family moved to Los Angeles.

They formed in 1985, and by the end of the ’88 they were American rock’s officially sanctioned public enemy number one. Politically incorrect, sleazy, debauched, toxic, liberal-baiting, hated by parents and all the other things that make a perfect rock band. And there behind a Gibson Les Paul, under a top hat and a mop of black curls stood a somewhat bemused guitarist, who had become the coolest member of the coolest band on earth. That’s pretty cool.
Guns N'Roses was a band that came together in 1985. Because of their attitude, they were a bad influence for many kids who wanted to be like them, but that's what every child wants to be like. One of the band's most popular members was Slash, the lead guitarist.
Their album "Appetite For Destruction" sold 20 million copies.

Guns N' Roses is recognized as the band that changed the way the heavy metal industry was moving in the late 1980s. While most bands during the period produced simple songs and were dependent of their looks rather than the messages of their music (see hair metal), Guns N' Roses ushered in an era where facial make-up and spandex pants (typical of the late 80's bands, and Axl, who wore spandex into the 90's) were integrated into popular culture.
Their peers in the music industry spoke highly of the band. Ozzy Osbourne and Joe Perry called GN'R "the next Rolling Stones." In 2002, Q magazine named Guns N' Roses in their list of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die". Also, the television network VH1 ranked Guns N' Roses # 9 in the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". All of their studio albums of original material appeared in Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All-Time" list.
However, the band has not been free of criticism from the media. The well-known drug abuse by some members of the group, particularly Slash and McKagan, and Axl's Charles Manson T-shirts, were used by the media to display GN'R as a bad example to the millions of teenagers that followed them around the world. The long periods of time that took the group to record their albums was also a source of heavy criticism.
Front-man Axl Rose, however, has become a source of both controversy and criticism since the majority of the original members left the group. His excessive elusiveness has led to several stories that claim that he is suffering from serious bipolar disorder. Music critics have blamed Rose for the break-up of the original group, have criticized him for continuing the band after the departure of the originals, and for the "perfectionism" that has contributed to personal conflict and the long delays between albums. Rose has not given a press conference since 1994.
PARAPHRASE
Guns 'Roses were a band that had changed the way the music industry was moving in the late 80s and early 90s. They made looks important, brought in facial make-up and spandex pants and still got their message in their music across. Gun N'Roses is ranked on of the tops bands of all time, being number nine in the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock".
But because of the many bad drug habits by the band members, they have been known to be well criticized. This is why it sometimes took so long for them to record their albums.
The lead singer, Axl Rose is said to be blamed for the break up of the band.

Guns N' Roses rocked the entire music industry in the early 90's with a gritty brand of hard rock that seemed to impact listeners like no other mainstream bands of the day- and not since the likes of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and of course, Led Zeppelin. Slash was quoted in the late 80's as saying, "we were the right band in the right place at the right time". This could not be more true as the mid 1980's were awash with the all-new glam metal or hair metal genre. Guns N' Roses sprang from this moshpit of glam without the look or glitz associated with hard rock at the time. The band successfully opened a door closed to young rock fans by the early 80's new wave heavy synth bubble-gum typhoon with their "real" hard rock sound. In the span of 8 fast years they transcended the music industry and headlined the world's largest venues before breaking up. The rest is history. The everlasting vibes left on the music industry by Guns N' Roses made way for today's bands by solidifying success with sounds like the heavy duty drumbeat (Adler, Sorum) , blues styled metal guitar (Slash), creative, Ramones tinted rhythm guitar (Izzy), and punk influenced bass guitar (Duff), and of course, a wildly talented, falsetto strong, and paranoid bipolar lead singer (Axl). These significant playing styles came together like never before (and never again) in Guns N' Roses. This band was the last of the great and big rock bands. The end of Guns N' Roses came with the wave of new grunge acts and a paradigm shift in the business... and they got HIM playing guitar. Not bad.

The band developed their own type of music over the years and just said that they were extremely lucky to have been so succesful. Their history as a band isn't long, but legendary and they have made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
