Patient education section of the American Association of Family Physicians
The green sections of the website's front page is "consumer health" friendly. For guidelines, education and policy related to travel, food, vaccine, emergency preparedness, health promotion and injury prevention. Statistics specifically related to disease surveillance.

Case - For Workshop #2 (Nov 2013)
Resources to support the following case: A 36 year old dad wants to know when his 14 year old son can go back to playing hockey after seeing you (the physician) for a concussion. They have been reading the ongoing debate in the sports pages and not sure what this means for young minor league players.

Original Osteoporosis Letter for SMOG
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that is common in women after the age of 65. It can lead to fragile bones that can easily break, causing pain, limitation of activities and deformity. A bone mineral density (BMD) test can identify this condition early. There are treatments available that can prevent broken bone (fracture). You are at even higher risk of having this disease if you have any of these additional risk factors:
• You have had a broken bone fracture after age 40 unrelated to major injury
• Either of your parents had a broken hip
• Use of a steroid medication such as prednisone for more than 3 months
• Use of specific breast cancer treatment medications called aromatase inhibitors
• Your periods stopped (menopause) before age 45
• You currently smoke or have 3 or more alcohol containing drinks each day
• Your weight is currently less than 130 pounds
• You have had major weight loss since age 25 (over 10% of body weight)
• You have lost 2 inches or more in height since age 25
• You have fallen 2 or more times in the past 12 months
Please ask your family physician or medical caregiver about your risk for osteoporosis and whether you should have a BMD test. For good basic bone health, you should participate in regular active weight-bearing exercise, have a total daily calcium intake of 1200 mg including dietary calcium and supplements, a daily vitamin D supplement of 800-2,000 IU and participate in fall prevention strategies.
