  • Feb 21, 12

-At Potsdam Conference, Truman, Atlee, and Stalin came up with the decision that Korea would be divided at the 38th Parallel

-USA would supervise the South (led by Sungman Rhee)

-USSR would supervise the North (led by Kim Il-Sung)

-The division later caused the Korean War (1950-1953)

Certain countries' destinies rested completely on the decisions the victorious Allies would take after World War II. The ancient empire of Korea was in fact one of them. Ruled by the Japanese since 1910, the Koreans had now been liberated and required a new government. As a matter of prevention, Korea however was separated at the 38th Parallel into North and South Korea. This changed Korean history forever.

    • The eventual division of Korea was considered at the Potsdam Conference, boundaries  weren't discussed and the wishes of the Korean people to be free of foreign interference were  not considered

      • The division of Korea at the 38th Parallel was discussed at Potsdam, yet neither the Korean leaders' nor citizens' ideas were taken into account.

  • The goal in the Koreas was to disarm the Japanese troops and create a government to rule over Korea, something that had not been there since 1910. The US, however, did not find itself with a policy towards a solution for Korea; giving independence would only allow communism to spread. Therefore the US would occupy part of Korea to contain communism and give birth to non-communist leaders. As a result, on Aug. 14, 1945 Truman declared the division of Korea at the 38th Parallel

    • No division of a nation in the present world is so astonishing in its origin as the division of Korea; none is so unrelated to conditions of sentiment within the nation itself at the time the division was effected; none to this day so unexplained; in none does blunder and planning oversight appear to have played so large a role. Finally, there is no division for which the U.S. government bears so heavy a share of the responsibility as it bears for the division of Korea.

      • Gregory Henderson says here how the decision to separate Korea was done without any consent or sentiment from the Koreans themselves. Also, it says that it is the only division of a nation that the Americans bear such a huge responsibility for.

All in all, the decision of one country affected another. This small decision that would help Korea to its unification and independence failed, causing a full-blown war and a permanent separation. The division of Korea at the 38th Parallel altered the Asian peninsula's history forever.
