Sarah Infante's List: Mock Interview Assignment WK 2

    • Skills & Education
    • Composers usually have an extensive education in music theory, composition, and performance; a bachelor’s degree is valuable, but an MFA is better. It is expected that these artists are proficient in playing at least one instrument, usually piano. Most degree programs designed for future composers will have components relating to orchestral conducting, writing for voice, tonal harmony, scoring, and a thorough study of music history. Also helpful are courses that focus on recording, composition software, and music business. It is highly recommended that you become familiar with the laws concerning copyright, licensing, and the role of music publishers. Above all, a composer has an inherent talent, distinct creative voice, and well-tuned ear for melody.

    • A project that's "ripe" is a project that's in the right stage of the game's development process. You want to hit them when they are actually looking for a composer, or (even better) should be looking but haven't started yet.
    • With first-time pro composers, there is sometimes an "I'll do anything!" mentality, that could land you a job that's not a great match for your strengths, resulting in less enjoyment, less musical quality and a less satisfied game developer.

    • The recorded and broadcast performing arts should continue to proliferate and diversify. Advances in production, recording, and distribution technologies will allow Americans to choose among a wider variety of performances and art forms than they do today. Although the Internet's ability to produce sustained profitability remains to be demonstrated, it is already reaching far-flung audiences and creating healthy markets for art forms that had previously been economically insignificant. In the future, niche arts markets may be not only possible, but profitable.

Americans will also have increasing access to live performances in their own communities. Small professional nonprofit and for-profit performing groups will be able to build and maintain comparatively small but loyal audiences who value their artistry and will be willing to participate both as consumers and patrons. Small organizations in the volunteer sector will continue to provide low-budget productions of great cultural and artistic diversity performed largely by volunteers.

    • There are many challenges to writing original musical compositions.  The first one is creating a great melody or melodies for each piece. When I am satisfied with a melody or melodies for one piece, the next thing I want is to make certain that I am not duplicating something that I have written before. When composing music, it is not uncommon to repeat similar patterns in melodies, so I work to be conscious of that potential.
    • Another challenge is to compose a piece that is beyond my comfort zone. There are so many styles of music by great composers that have inspired me and have allowed me to consider the myriad ways to make a composition interesting. For instance, it’s fun to write a piece that only uses 100 notes – a little bit like Twitter! I’ve learned there is actually a music group that requests submissions for such a piece.

    • With the huge success of say, Tomb Raider, do you ever get a little stage fright for repeat work on this level? The expectations must be high to retain that super high standard etc, so how do you mentally manage your creative state so you can keep your chops up and deliver?
    • What does your daily routine look like?

My studio is behind my house and I usually work 9-5, Monday through Friday. I’m simply more productive if I have that evening and weekend break. I also like to dedicate an entire day to a specific project – seems to keep me more focused. My normal pace is 2-3 minutes of finished music each day, either ready to be dropped in the game permanently or sent off for parts destined for the recording stage.

    • The USA Today study found that music directors and composers accounted for the third-fastest growing job sector, with a 178 percent 10-year job growth rate according to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. USA Today noted more original music in commercials and movies as a cause for this.

But using that same data from the BLS, SoundCon found that the number of composing jobs remained flat until 2009, when growth in the space took off. As the graph above shows, SoundCon found that the dramatic increase was largely due to the arrival of Apple’s App Store and the Facebook Application Developer.

“The games need developers to make them and the developers need composers to write music for them,” SoundCon said.
