Sam Incorvaia's List: Research Proposal

  • Hope Within Despair

  • Introduction

As life passes on, innocent women grow older and may experience tragedy in their lifetime. Uterine cancer is a common, feminine cancer that affects the reproductive system and knocks strong women down to timid, despaired people. Suddenly, nothing makes sense anymore; the diagnosis feels like a dream and women just want to snap out of the endless nightmare. Even after treatment, uterine cancer continues to haunt them through medical bills, debt, fear, and occasional appointments. However, throughout the emotional turmoil, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Uterine cancer is 70% curable and known by a plethora of databases: for example, “CNN”, “The American Cancer Society”, and the “National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine”. Despite a significant percentage, uterine cancer cloaks itself in mysterious ways. Women are unaware of the disease’s symptoms until it’s too late. Therefore, early detection is the key to cure women of the stress, the turmoil, and the pain.

Cancer Biology. Cancer Quest. Winship Cancer Institute. Web. 20 Nov. 2010.

In the video "Cancer Biology", it informs people that cancer can be a risky thing to treat and prevent by showing visuals of how tumors may form. The author supports his/her explanations by explaining how tumors form and other various information on cancer thoroughly. The author's purpose is to illustrate how cancer can occur within our bodies so that we are better informed about cancer and tumors. The author writes in a formal tone for people who want to learn about cancer.

The information is useful only for the purpose of watching cells in the body and tumors grow. This is the only video source in my group of sources. It is a reliable and unbiased source. The goal is to illustrate cancer in the human body. It was a helpful source because I was able to see the cancer and tumors emerging in the video. It shapes my argument by defining the danger of tumors spreading quickly. It can't really be used in the project; however the information that is articulated can be helpful. I can use the info in my paper by emphasizing the importance of early detection in cancer. It hasn't changed what I think of my topic.

"Cancer and CAM: At a Glance". 11 Oct. 2011. Web. 31 Jan. 2012

The author, in the article “Cancer and CAM: At a Glance” argues that there are alternative treatments, but not completely curable ones, towards cancer. The author supports their argument by providing a wide array of research results and viewpoints in the medical field. The author’s purpose is to inform the audience about CAM and the effects it may take in order to help present the pros and cons of utilizing CAM. The author writes in a formal tone for people experiencing cancer and looking for alternative methods.

The source is very helpful and stands out because it gives a differing viewpoint: there are alternative, nonprescription methods that make cancer patients feel more comfortable. Normally, other sources would give readers a one-way road towards a treatment. Instead, this source presents the idea of CAM. The source is objective; its goal is to inform the audience of the positives and negatives of using CAM resources in order to make the patient feel more comfortable. The source was helpful to me because it helped me look at alternative viewpoints and methods towards treating cancer. It has changed how I feel about my topic because many sources claimed that cancer has all these risk factors, but never mentioned ways to relieve them.

    • Few cancer patients say they use CAM because they are disappointed with their standard treatment
    • Their motivation is more likely to be a perceived benefit from CAM, a desire to feel more in control of their health, or a strong belief in CAM.

Landau supports her argument by including different viewpoints and statistics. The author’s purpose is to point out that contraceptives can be helpful towards lowering risks of abdominal, feminine cancer but harmful to breast cancer in order to help weigh in women’s decisions towards using a pill. The author writes in a semi-formal tone to nuns.

The source is helpful and stands out because it claims that an occupation or a way of life has deprived women of caring for themselves. “Should Nuns be on the Pill?” is objective; its goal is to inform readers about the pill and how it can potentially decrease the risk of contracting feminine, abdominal cancers. Landau’s input was helpful to me because it made me realize that people should take a birthing pill, despite whether a woman has been through pregnancy or not. It has changed the way I view my topic by introducing a new conceptual idea towards my paper: the effects of birthing pills on decreasing the risks of developing abdominal cancers.

  • Conclusion

Throughout the research, I realized that majority of the sources had a similar understanding of uterine cancer. Current findings indicate that scientists have a vague idea of how uterine cancer is caused. However, cancer is inevitably dangerous and little is truly known about its origin. Scientists agree that uterine cancer is caused by genetics and, questionably, abdominal radiation. How are people exposed to radiation? Women may have had another incident in their pasts, so a round of chemotherapy or another radiation treatment may have caused a tragic side effect. In truth, people are scrambling to find a cure and prevent its risk factors without knowing what to expect. Methods suggested to reduce contracting uterine cancer are to eat healthier, exercise more, and take birth control pills. It’s a miserable verdict because as far as humanity knows, there is nothing people can do to prevent the disease permanently. Therefore, people need to take action. Learn facts about the uterine cancer. Volunteer at a local hospital or cancer center. Do whatever it takes to empower women to fight off this nightmare.
