Simone McKenna's List: Breakfast Design Challenge

I thought this site would be helpful to students during their design challenge. It talks about the importance of correctly labeling food, the ingredients, used by dates & nutritional profiles. As part of their design challenge students must sell their product to a panel of judges from within their school. The panel will have a criteria list to check off & advertising & correct packaging is involved.

This resource gave me information about food intolerances and allergies. It is essential when dealing with food to know about some peoples reactions to certain food groups. As students creating a breakfast menu for their canteen as their design challenge research must be carried out to take into consideration issues such as these.

This is a NSW public school website. It gave me lots of information about expectations of school canteens & lead me to further investigate food intolerances for our first design challenge.

Flexischool is an online ordering website for school canteens, also catering for uniforms & fundraising. I looked at this site to see if there was any such product available with regards to our first design challenge. Schools can register to use this online system that allows parent/caregivers to order from home, pay with card & their children receive the goods through their school.

We found this 'food pyramid' website & thought it was very child friendly. The food pyramid is used to easily explain daily food group requirements for a healthy diet. There are many different versions of the food pyramid, this particular site used colour to help children remember certain food groups. It also had many links relating to healthy eating & exercise. There are adult tabs along the top with more detailed information on these subjects.

This site was helpful during our second DDE cycle in our first design challenge. We were investigating energy & sustenance. The site helps us understand carbs & GI value in certain foods, we were able to adjust our ingredients to accommodate our requirements.

I came across this site while recipe searching for our design challenge. This is a wonderful recipe site for kids and allows them to navigate easily to find a desired recipe. The instructions are easy to follow , with colourful mouthwatering pictures. I am sure children would love exploring this site to investigate healthy eating & the recipes they could create to make healthy choices.

This is a recipe site with over one thousand different recipes. We used this site to gather information about base ingredients we would need for our design challenge healthy breakfast.

This was an informative site for healthy muffin ingredients & health benefits. It helped us to consider diverse health issues in ones diet & to adjust our breakfast muffin/bar to accommidate these problems. Please note the backing track is terrible.....but keep with it as it stops after awhile!

You have to use this website when teaching anything related to food, recipes or health & nutrition. We found this invaluable as we adjusted ingredients, needed substitutes & just general cooking information. Great resource for any food based design challenge. Handy for home use also!

Once again we used About.com to assist us in discovering why breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. This information reiterated what we already knew as adults & would be very valuable for students to research to gain an understanding of the health benefits assosciated with eating breakfast daily.

About.com is a great site that answers all of your burning questions! We used this site to investigate childrens diets to give us some back ground knowledge on whether our design challenge would work in a classroom.

This medical link gave us information about Beta Glucan. We discovered the cardiovascular health benefits one can attain by eating foods that contain Beta Glucan. Beta Glucan also helps keep the feeling of fullness, which was a criteria in our challenge we needed to meet. This information helped us to add certain ingredients into our breakfast recipes that were productive for the heart & satiety.

We used this extensive website during our first design challenge. It was full of information regarding nutritional diets, the benefits of breakfast & healthy recipes. It was a wealth of information & had many relative links to continue our investigation.

This CSIRO website assisted my team & I in our first assignment. It gave us information on national obesity rates & discussed the benefits of a balanced healthy diet.

This website was used as a resource for my second assessment. It would be used to give my class some background knowledge of the amazing work, celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver has done to create healthier canteen services in Britain.

This is a great idea students can investigate further. Jamie Oliver, celebrity chef, gives ideas on how you can create a healthier eating environment in your school canteen. Students could explore his techniques and create their own eploration locally, this information can get them thinking!

This Wikipedia explaination talks about Jamie Olivers plight to clean up school canteens in Britain. Children would investigate this to see what a difference one person can make & how making healthier food choices can change their lives.
