Rob Russell's List: Cells

• • This lesson will be used as summative assessment after an introduction to cells. It is to last 4 weeks to give students ample time for presentations and in class research.

• • By an understanding of mitosis I am hoping to push the importance of mitosis in life, not memorization of each step.

• • This is a very good way to get students engaged with the topic because it will be fun and creative
• • Formative assessment part of the asssignment
• • Summative assessement. I would also be sure to ask students why mitosis is important. I remember in school I was confused as to why we had to memorize each step, and put more emphasis on this than on the overall impact of the process in organisms.

• • Comparing a cell to a factory system will help students establish a more concrete picture of cell functiuon.
• At this grade level, research suggests that understanding of systems can now be  made more explicit
• • I am not using Cells 1 for this lesosn plan because I believe that cells 2 can cover the material adequately
• understand the cell as a system by exploring a more familiar and tangible  example of a system-a factory.
• • This lesson plan can be used as formative assessment shortly after a review of cell parts to see what the students are having trouble with. Specifically what organelles they may be confused with.
• • For this lesson being at the beginning of a unit I am looking for more basic understanding so that we can build on a good foundation for later in the unit on cells
• • I dislike the visual image displayed by the onloine book. The information is ok, but I believe this image may further confuse a student.

• • I like the questions provided in this section, but more explanation may be needed for some, and depending on the class I would omit specific questions if more attention is needed on another aspect of the "factory"
