I only half agree.
Certainly, building a positive perception based on a strong and compelling corporate narrative should be the priority for any business which values its reputation. Brands such as Virgin, Apple and Tesco have consistently communicated their vision and values to their stakeholders.
Rather than release a blanket statement across multiple channels, Toyota is actively engaging with their community at a town hall level to deliver honest, straight-forward answers. A great example of the importance of having a crisis plan in place and an even better example of the evolving world of customer care and consumer engagement.

Today, one of the most important lessons learned from the BP oil spill, Toyota recall, and Goldman Sachs fraud charges is just how few companies are prepared for a crisis.
So, why aren't more companies prepared?
Although crisis events are unpredictable, they are not unexpected. During the next five years, 83 percent of companies will face a crisis that will negatively impact their share price by 20 to 30 percent, according to Oxford-Metrica.

After a massive global recall, the Japanese car giant ‘Toyota’ is yet again feeling the heat with the car owners demanding for full refund of their cars. Adding to the already grief ridden recall saga, Toyota invited loads of criticisms followed by legal battles ever since the revelations of their car’s tendency to accelerate out of control. The technical glitch seems too hot to handle for Toyota, and now the customers are out of control.
