Raul Kohl's List: Primary Sources

  • Feb 26, 11

The exhibit entitled "Eyewitness" on the National Archives website provides multiple primary sources from a multitude of historical events. These events include the assassination of JFK, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. The types of primary sources include photographs, interviews, hand-written notes and memoirs. For example the digital copy of President Jimmy Carter's hand-written notes from his meeting with Pope John Paul II are displayed in the exhibit.

As a history major I believe primary sources are critical to the learning process, especially in the field of history. A primary source, especially of the ones provided in this exhibit, allows a reader relive history. Further by using a primary sources the agendas of secondary sources are removed and a reader only has to take into account the possible bias of a single author. For example a secondary source may choose to omit certain passages that do not promote the beliefs of the author. It is for this reason in particular that primary sources will be crucial in my classroom.
