• 昨日，多位有识之士在论坛上大声疾呼，鼓浪屿历史上一直是教育、文化的重镇，也是医疗卫生的中心，但现在这些特色都在萎缩，要重现鼓浪屿的美丽，促进旅游业的大发展，就必须复兴鼓浪屿的文化、再现鼓浪屿的风情，吸引全世界文化名人，恢复鼓浪屿原有的“贵族气质”。

• 我在威尔身上看到了理想的大学。那里，学生可以自由发展个性与才智，而不必套进同样的模子，试图长成或装扮同样的身材，千人一面，一个脑袋。

• 有一年，弗吉尼亚大学的西南联大史专家易社强(John Israel)教授来访。做完讲座，为了体验学生生活，跟我们班一同下乡。躺在铺上聊天时，易先生说，你们现在蛮像联大呀！他看得很准。那师生戮力同心、艰苦奋斗、勇于抗争、不畏险阻的精神，继承的正是二十世纪中国大学最优秀的传统。而在外语系，这自由的空气和宽容的氛围，是跟刘先生的领导与关爱分不开的。
