Puoh Share See's List: KFC Chicken (Genetically Modified Meat Issues)

  • KFC Genetically Modified Chickens

    • KFC has been a part of our American traditions for many years. Many people, day in and day out, eat at KFC religiously. Do they really know what they are eating? During a recent study of KFC done at the University of New Hampshire, they found some very upsetting facts.
    • First of all, has anybody noticed that just recently, the company has changed their name? Kentucky Fried Chicken has become KFC. Does anybody know why? We thought the real reason was because of the "FRIED" food issue. It's not. The reason why they call it KFC is because they can not use the word chicken anymore. Why? KFC does not use real chickens. They actually use genetically manipulated organisms. These so called "chickens" are kept alive by tubes inserted into their bodies to pump blood and nutrients throughout their structure. They have no beaks, no feathers, and no feet. Their bone structure is dramatically shrunk to get more meat out of them. This is great for KFC because they do not have to pay so much for their production costs. There is no more plucking of the feathers or the removal of the beaks and feet. The government has told them to change all of their menus so they do not say chicken anywhere. If you look closely you will notice this. Listen to their commercials, I guarantee you will not see or hear the word chicken. I find this matter to be very disturbing. I hope people will start to realize this and let other people know. Please forward this message to as many people as you can. Together we make KFC start using real chicken again.

    • Many of us have heard the urban legend about “Kentucky Fried Chicken” having to change their name to KFC because they didn’t use real chickens, and the government wouldn’t let them falsely advertise that they served real chicken. A friend of mine told me that story in a KFC in a small city, where I used to live, in China. He refused to eat the chicken. I didn’t believe the story. I’m a tough sell. I will put a story like that in a little cloud in my head where it can float around until I have a chance to verify it. Research, for example, established that the story about enterprising Chinese businessmen using a chemical cocktail to convert pork to beef was true.
    • I was right about the KFC story, though. I just typed in a few key words and found out from Snopes.com almost instantly that it was a big, fat hoax. It was vaguely gratifying to learn that my sense of reality was in the ballpark. Or so I thought.

    • Raising chickens that have been genetically modified so that they are born without beaks, feathers, or feet, or with additional legs is still beyond the reach of modern science for the time being (although selective breeding has been used to enhance some features, such as breast size). Also, the claims about Kentucky Fried Chicken's name change are easily belied:
    • Links on KFC's web site (such as kentuckyfriedchicken.com clearly describe its product as "chicken" numerous times, something it could hardly get away with if the government were prohibiting the company from using that word.) KFC sells the equivalent of 736 million chickens annually. They'd have to own some monstrously huge "chicken farms" in order to supply themselves with well over half a billion chickens every year.

    • The story goes that KFC has had to stop using the word "chicken" to describe its products because they are not actually chicken and have to change it due to a government mandate. This is shown by the fact that KFC changed its name from "Kentucky Fried Chicken" to just "KFC." They suggest that genetically manipulated organisms are instead the replacement for chicken. These are animals being kept alive by tubes to pump blood and nutrients through them. They have modified bones that are smaller, and they have no beaks or feathers. The reason for this organism is that it costs less to produce, and KFC needs to produce a lot of meat for their company to run. The last line generally implores the reader to listen for the word "chicken" in commercials, as they supposedly do not use the word.
    • KFC does use the word chicken on its menu and in commercials. You can find it on their website and if you go to a restaurant it will be found all over the place. The de-emphasis on "chicken" in the name, instead going to "KFC," was a marketing decision, and not one handed down by the government. They use real chickens and not modified organisms. They do not raise their own chickens, and rely on third parties for their food supply. There is no technology to make "chicken" in the way proposed in the story, and it is just an urban legend to scare people.
    • Although Snopes and a number of other sites have confirmed that KFC still refers to their "products" as chickens, the photographs provided here (via Reuters), show that there is no doubt, genetically-modified chickens have been created in order to increase profits, and lessen the quality of life of the animals used in the food industry.

    • n 1991 Kentucky Fried Chicken officially changed their name to KFC. Everyone thought it was in order to shorten it, or maybe place less emphasis on the word ‘fried’ in the increasingly health-conscious consumer market. Not so. KFC had been forced by the government to stop using the word chicken. Why? Because the animals they reared in thousands of dark, cramped sheds across the country had been genetically manipulated to the extent that they were no longer the same species.
    • Yes, scientists had created Evil Mutant Chickens! These were creatures with no feathers, no beaks, no feet and hardly even any bone to support them – organisms designed to provide an almost pure meat harvest. Most had at least six (footless) legs – why do you think chicken drumsticks are always sold in sixes in supermarkets?

    • This claims that KFC (formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken) is trying to increase profits by developing genetically engineered chickens that have more meat, are cheaper to raise, and faster to process.  They are variously described as having no heads, no beaks, no legs, and no feathers.  That's why they changed their name to KFC.
    • t's complete fiction.  KFC denies it and there is no evidence of the genetically engineered chickens described.   KFC uses chickens that are born from other chickens in the normal way.  KFC did not change it's name in order to accommodate chickens that are not really chickens.
    • KFC is plotting a major consumer ad push in China next month as it battles increased competition and struggles to regain consumers trust that its chicken products are safe.
    • The company in November will introduce a new KFC advertising campaign in China about quality assurance, CEO David Novak said on a conference call. It's not a highly original approach, but one that KFC is hoping will resonate with Chinese consumers: The ads will feature store employees and suppliers such as poultry farmers, he said.

    • IF THERE'S AN AMERICAN COUNTERPART to the tikka masala story, it might be General Tso's chicken, which the New York Times has described as "the most famous Hunanese dish in the world." That might come as news to chefs in Hunan, who apparently had never heard of it until the opening of China to the West in recent decades. The man generally credited with the idea of putting deep-fried chicken pieces in a hot chili sauce was the Hunan-born chef Peng Changkuei, who fled to Taiwan after the Communist revolution in 1949. He named the dish for a 19th-century military commander who led the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion, a largely forgotten conflict that claimed upwards of 20 million lives. Peng moved to New York in 1973 to open a restaurant that became a favorite of diplomats and began cooking his signature dish. Over the years it has evolved in response to American tastes to become sweeter, and in a kind of reverse cultural migration has now been adopted as a "traditional" dish by chefs and food writers in Hunan.
    • But increasingly, as foreign observers have noticed, "chicken" to the Chinese, at least those who live in the cities, means what's served at KFC. Since the first drumstick was dipped into a fryer in Beijing in 1987, the chain has opened more than 3,000 branches around the country, and is now more profitable in China than in the United States. Numerous reasons have been advanced for this success, from the cleanliness of the restrooms to the alleged resemblance of Colonel Sanders to Confucius, but it apparently does not reflect a newfound Chinese appetite for the cuisine of the American mid-South. "You can find bone-in fried chicken there," notes Mary Shelman, a Kentucky native and the head of the agribusiness program at Harvard Business School. "But it's always dark meat, which the Chinese prefer, and it's one menu item out of around 30, and it's not the most popular." The chain has thrived by offering the Chinese customers food they were already familiar with, including (depending on the region) noodles, rice and dumplings, along with chicken wraps, chicken patties and chicken wings, which are so popular, Shelman says, that the company periodically has to deny rumors it has a farm somewhere that raises six-winged chickens.

    • The Shocking Truth about KFC - What Happens to the Unsold Chicken Parts

Some months ago, a rumour made its way across the Internet that fast-food chain KFC could no longer use the word chicken in the company name, as KFC products came from a creature genetically altered to the point it could no longer be so classified.

    • Like much on the Internet, this story turned out to be urban legend, with no basis in fact. Some think it may even have been put out by KFC itself, to detract attention from more harmful allegations, ones less easy to debunk, based as they are, in truth. My own research into KFC, in which I have uncovered things yet darker and more disturbing than any urban legend about genetically altered birds, would indicate this to be the case.

    • Most Americans have heard the story about KFC's not-chicken. So the story goes, KFC has had to change its name from Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC in order to avoid litigation from people claiming that the animal fried and served by them is not actually a chicken but is some genetically modified creature.

Most sites claim that the story originated from a circulated e-mail, and that this e-mail claims that the University of New Hampshire discovered the truth about the chicken during a study.
    • When I say most sites, I mean debunking sites. If you look this story up on a WWW search engine, your results are invariably divided between two catagories: sites relating the story and asking if it's real, and sites debunking the myth as 'urban legend'. Those that ask the question usually don't mention any letter, rather relating that the story was received word-of-mouth, whereas almost all of the debunking sites display the alleged letter in full.
