• Breadcrumbs are a series of links, the first one pointing to your home page and the rest pointing to the pages upwards of the current one in the site hierarchy, all the way down to the current page.
• f a user arrived at this page, he can immediately see that this page is part of a site, and specifically the fifth page of tutorial 27 in the HTML section of the Experts section.

  • Hmm, I didn't necessarily get that. At least, not the 27 / 5 part. But why would you name a tutorial something generic like that anyway?

• Breadcrumb navigation should be regarded as an extra feature and shouldn’t replace effective primary navigation menus.

• We found the overall usage of the breadcrumb in site navigation to be low. Breadcrumb users were not found to be more efficient than users who did not use the breadcrumb. Participants used a variety of navigational means, such as the Back button, left and top navigation bars, and searching to find the information instead of or in addition to the breadcrumb tool.

• in many cases, the user never traversed those pages to get where they now are.
• We're recommending that when teams see users needing breadcrumbs, they look for other holistic design solutions. They'll need to watch users and see the circumstances leading up to how the need arises. In almost all cases, they'll find a better way to solve the problem than traditional breadcrumbs.
