"Using a digital text of Herodotus’s Histories, the Hestia project has been experimenting with different web-mapping technologies such as GIS, Google Earth and TimeMap to investigate the cultural geography of the ancient world through the eyes of one of its first witnesses (http://hestia.open.ac.uk/). Now, bringing these technologies together with other online materials, we have produced a series of Open Educational Resources that have been designed for a general public to find out more about the world of Herodotus, and that may also be used by undergraduates with varying degrees of familiarity with the Histories. This short OpenLearn programme enables users to respond to the challenge of Herodotus’s enquiry and explore a number of the Histories’ key themes using the resources developed by the Hestia project:
- to search the database of place names
- to view the Histories in GoogleEarth
- to read the text alongside maps of the places mentioned"
"Welcome to my blog! I'm interested in the ancient world, and the early Christians within it; in the ancient texts and the manuscripts in which these reach us; in the free circulation of information, and therefore inevitably in freedom of speech online.

I reasoned that no-one would scan them unless I did; and so I became the editor of the Additional Fathers collection. ..."
