The maximum economic efficiency for pod production was reached with 17 and 18.6 t ha-1 of manure, with predicted net incomes of 2.88 and 3.36 t ha-1 of pods, in the presence and absence of NPK, respectively. For dry grains, the maximum economic efficiency was achieved with 23 t ha-1 of manure, in the presence of NPK, which produced a net revenue of 2.12 t ha-1 of dry grains.
These may be filled with water bottles placed in the pipe (observed in Kenya), filled with water from a water truck or hose, or fitted with a drip emitter. If a drip system can be setup the pipe can be smaller diameter (1/2"). We have set up a deep pipe irrigation system on a remote tank with battery powered timer to irrigate once a week with excellent success. Deep pipe irrigation is better than surface or buried drip systems in several respects. First, it can be used with low quality water and low technology. Second, even in areas where the materials and technology for drip systems are available the deep pipe system provides the benefits of buried drip, greater water use efficiency (due to reduced evaporation) and weed control; but the surface mounted deep delivery drip systems can be monitored and repaired much more easily. And, finally, the pipes can be collected at the end of the season for full field tillage operations to any depth desired. |
Productivity and morphology of pods and seeds of lima bean varieties in Paraíba State, Brazil
Abstract ¾ This work aimed to determine lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) yield and to describe morphology of their pods and seeds. Eight lima bean varieties (Amarela-cearense, Boca-de-moça, Branquinha, Mororó, Olho-de-ovelha, Olho-de-peixe, Orelha-de-vó, Raio-de-sol) were evaluated in a field experiment from July to December 1999, in Bananeiras, PB, Brazil. All of the varieties presented indeterminate, climbing growth habit with oblong and bend long pods containing two to four seeds. The variety with the longest pods (89.9 mm) and the highest 100seed weight (79.5 g) was Orelha-de-vó. Olho-de-ovelha and Orelha-de-vó had the highest and the lowest performance regarding dry-seed yield with productivity rates of 0.852 and 0.293 t ha-1, respectively. High variation in number of days to flowering and to dry-seed harvesting was used to classify varieties as early (Amarela-cearense, Olho-de-peixe and Orelha-de-vó), intermediate (Boca-de-moça, Branquinha, Mororó and Olho-de-ovelha) and late (Raio-de-sol). The varieties Amarela-cearense, Boca-de-moça, Branquinha, Mororó, Olho-de-ovelha and Olho-de-peixe are the most promising for planting in the dry season with supplemental irrigation.

Optimum yield offresh beans is 2-8 t/ha. In the tropics average production of dry seedis 1-1.5 t/ha. Yields of dry seed may reach 2-2.5 t/ha for bush typesand 3-4 t/ha from climbing types.
