Nació en Teherán en 1952. Estudió fotografía en el West Surrey College of Art & Design en Inglaterra. Regresó a Irán en 1978 y desde entonces ha colaborado con Time, Newsweek, New York Times, Paris Match, Le Figaro Magazine y Courrier International, entre otros medios. Forma parte del grupo de fotógrafos iraníes que fueron reconocidos en el mundo entero después de la Revolución islámica. Su fotografía Crying Soldier es una de las imágenes más recordadas de la guerra entre Irán e Irak.
