Start your research here. This list by a professor at Boston College includes 19th century artists. Artists names are hyperlinked to a page which will take you to images of their work. Choose one artist to study.

There are additional 19th & 20th century artists on this page. This site allows you to search by name, style and movement. You may also choose one from this site who was active in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Once you've selected your artist, use this website to find a few interesting facts about your artist for your timeline. You may include media from this site. Be sure to cite your sources.

Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide is a scholarly, referred e-journal about 19th century art: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and decorative arts. This site may help you find some current research about your artist.

This site is a searchable database and virtural museum of art through the 19th century.

This New York City museum has a large collection and an easily accessible web-interface. One resource of note is the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History. You may find background information here about the movement/style of your artist.

On the banks of the Seine, in a former railroad station, the museum houses art created between 1848 to 1914. Most artists for this project will have work in this museum.

A museum website that has plentiful visual content. Of note is a current exhibit of Cassatt and Degas. Both were Impressionist painters, Cassatt is an American and Degas is French.

Their website has a nice alphabetical listing of artists in their museum. Next to the artist's name is the number of paintings by the artist in their collection. Each artists page also includes some biographical information. Currently, MoMA has an exhibit of Paul Gauguin, a french artist from the early 1900's and the father of Fauvism If you are interested in Gauguin or Fauvism, this is a great resource.

The Getty Museum has many great resources. Artists maybe searched by name, type/medium or theme.

Another museum in New York City, on their website you have access to videos, lectures, and virtual tours, as well as images of artist's work.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has content by collection, from early American art, includes Folk Art and contemporary art. There are over 7000 pieces in their collection.

This museum includes over 2500 pieces from ancient Rome, through 19th century Europe and America.

This museum houses over 200 works by Vincent Van Gogh, and as well as his personal letters. The museum also includes work by other artists of the Impressionist and Postimpressionist eras and Van Gogh's friends
