Jessica Galvin's List: ScienceNews_MiddleSchool

  • Jun 20, 11

This news site focuses on current science issues as well as some features from the National Geographic magazine and its blogs. When you move beyond latest news you can search news topics according to media and subject. This site has an excellent collection of digital media. If teachers are working within a specific scientific news topic, this site is easy to navigate through. A downside to this site is the pop-up ads that occasionally appear. Another feature that can be distracting are the reader comments under the articles. That being said, this is an excellent resource with many rich resources.

This science news site is organized by topics. You can search through news relating to space, gadgets, earth, adventure, animals, autos, and science history. The main page features a few news story clips from each of these topics, and next to each section, you can click on to a link that features more articles on that subject. There are ads on the side of the page that can be distracting, but the amount of information on this site outweighs any issues I have with ads. This site also has many great digital media resources for classroom use.

This is a news site that spans the following topics: atoms and forces, earth and sky, humans and health, life, and tech and math. There is a search box on this site, allowing you to look for specific news stories as well. When you click on an article, related articles appear on the side bar. A great aspect to this site is that it also lists suggested archived Science News articles for further reading on the topic. Another great feature is that most of the articles list “power words” on the bottom, defining important vocabulary to understand them. Although the ads are not overwhelming, they do appear on the sidebars of the site.
