I have a 90 min block of time to work with so that helps. I also stick firmly to 15-18 min. rotations with short 3-5 min mini-lessons in between. I know 15 mins seems short for a guided reading lesson but with being a Title I school, the majority of our students are below grade level and I need to meet with all of them every day. Plus they need shorter periods of independent time to stay productive when they are not with me. After winter break, I can usually switch to just 4 rounds with my highest group doing literature circles or independent studies.

Fabulous site to learn about butterflies! There are several quiz activities, a field observation activity where you identify the parts of a butterfly, and a section where you can also build your own butterfly habitat! This would be a great extension to a lesson on butterfly life cycles.
What we can do to promote "good fit" books for this precarious group of children?
We can get to know our struggling reader's preferences immediately! Work on these children first. Talk w/ them, question parents, ask last year's teacher. Watch & listen. We know that children will show more enthusiasm for reading books about topics that are important to them.
Check w/ teachers in different grades for book recommendations @ levels you do need. Maybe they will even share.
Book Divide. Each teacher on a team provides an agreed upon number of books targeted for reluctant readers. Mark spines of each teacher's selection of books w/ a different colors of electrical tape. Every class gets a turn w/ each color for a specified time. Make note of popular books; they may be ones to obtain permanently in classrooms.
Intentionally spend "school supply budget monies" for one year on gathering quality books for struggling readers. As long as you teach you will have challenged readers in every class. The books will not go unused.
Talk with parents. They might be willing to purchase books for their child to have "just right" choices. Give them a list of book titles to choose from.
Allow students to bring familiar books from home to add to their book boxes.
Look for those fabulous books that contain few words but are packed w/ meaning. Be sure to include read-aloud selections. Discuss the idea that a book filled with words does not necessarily mean it is a "harder" book to read. It's the ideas in a book that determine complexity, not the number of words. Now that's a good lesson for everyone, parents too. Get librarian involved. They won't be able to resist a plea to match a child & a book.
