Disney Overview
"Founded in 1923 and headquartered in Burbank, CA, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) is an entertainment company. The company operates in five business segments: Media Networks, Parks and Resorts, Studio Entertainment, Consumer Products, and Interactive. Its Media Networks segment includes international and domestic cable television networks, a domestic broadcast television network, television production operations, and domestic and international television distribution. The company's Studio Entertainment segment produces and acquires live-action and animated motion pictures, direct-to-video content, musical recordings, and live stage plays. According to the company's current 10K government filing it had FYE 09/28/2013 revenue of $45 billion and has 175,000 employees."
CEO Iger Extension
Walt Disney Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Iger's contract has been extended 2 years through June 2018, delaying the company's decision on choosing a successor.
Iger has headed Disney during a period of unprecedented growth in which it gobbled up entertainment firms, including "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm Ltd., and launched lucrative firm franchises such as "Frozen" and "The Aengers."
This is the second time in recent years that Iger's contract has been extended by Disney's board.
Iger, who heads a company with about 175,000 employees and $45 billion in annual revenue, would be a "very difficult" act to follow.
"The good news is that if Disney is choosing someone from within, which is what is expected, they will have had the benefits of working with Iger for some time,"Quadrani said. (JPMorgan analyst) "So I think whoever replaces him could surprise us -- in a positive way."
Disney does not have a chief operating officer (COO). Within the company, the job is seen as a grooming station for the next CEO, a position ususally filled from within.
Iger said his time as chief operating officer was "very, very valuable" because it helped deepen his understanding of the company and craft a strategy that could lead to long-term success.
Under Iger, Disney made three key deals that had established healthy pipelines of content: the multibillion-dollar acquisitions of Pixar Animation Studios in 2006, Marvel Entertainment Inc. in 2009, and Lucasfilm in 2012.
Next year will be a big one for the company.
The Shanghai Disney Resort, a nearly $4 - billion theme park that Iger has been working on for more than a decade, is slated to open by Dec. 31, 2015. That same month, the first "Star Wars" film in a decade is scheduled to be released.
"It's comforting to know he is going to be there through that transitionary period," Quandrani said.
Sleeping Beauty
At long last, it's time to meet the missing co-star of Sleeping Beauty: the vulture.
That's right, a vulture character was destined to star in the 1959 classic, the last animated film produced by Walt Disney himself. A vulture with a New York accent, no less.
He didn't make the animated cut.
"The vulture has been hidden in boxes, and now he's been properly identified,"
The vulture, now featured in the extras for the new Blu-ray edition of Sleeping Beauty (out Tuesday), was a comical henchman for the evil Maleficent
The vulture, now featured in the extras for the new Blu-ray edition of Sleeping Beauty (out Tuesday), was a comical henchman for the evil Maleficent -- a bitter fairy looking to put an end to the beautiful Princess Aurora.
The bird never made it past the story sketch phase. "The vulture didn't add much to the story and also somewhat detracted from that imposing nature of the villain Maleficent," Carney says. "And this New York type of vulture didn't fit into the world of this classic medieval Europe where this film is set."
A non-speaking raven instead was Maleficent's sidekick.
Fox's team resurrected the original dialogue. The Blu-ray extras feature a rough scene from the sketches, with Carney's voice.
Don Hahn, who produced the 2014 live-action film Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, was impressed by the vulture find.
"I'm always fascinated by characters that are discarded. ... These movies are very lean. Every frame counts, and some characters have to fall by the wayside."
Frozen
Hullabaloo
Disney’s last traditionally animated films were 2009′s “The Princess and the Frog” and 2011′s “Winnie the Pooh.” Before that, decades of history allowed artists to put pencil to paper and create life on the big screen. Now, while computer animation certainly still requires the talent of animators, 2D hand-drawn animation is fading away.
A group of longtime Disney animators is aiming to prevent that from happening.
