    "Screw China!
    Nicholas Carlson | Jun. 2, 2009, 2:30 PM | 4,668 | 66

    Email
    More
Because the 20th anniversary of that time it massacred lots of unarmed students is coming up, the Chinese government is suddenly blocking Twitter, Hotmail, Flickr, Bing, Tumblr, Blogspot, Livejournal, and the Huffington Post.
But you know what? Screw China. You're better off not doing business there, anyway.
    Here's why:
You're above it. That's what Wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg decided after realizing China would unblock his service if he in turn blocked certain words or topics. "That sort of company is not one I would wake up every day and feel passionate about working in," Matt told the AFP.
Chinese users will drain your bandwidth without paying for it. Video-sharing site Veoh blocks users not just from China, but from across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe because it doesn't think it can make any money from the traffic those countries bring. “I believe in free, open communications,” Veoh CEO Dmitry Shapiro told the New York Times.  “But these people are so hungry for this content. They sit and they watch and watch and watch. The problem is they are eating up bandwidth, and it’s very difficult to derive revenue from it.”
Actually try to succeed in China and you're probably going to embarrass yourself at home. Back in 2004, Yahoo inadvertently helped the Chinese government imprison dissidents Shi Tao and Wang Xiaoning. By 2007, Yahoo's top lawyer, Michael Callahan, found himself apologizing to Congress for seeming to cover it up.
The locals know how to play the game better than you. How did local search engine Baidu get such a huge lead of Google in China? A local entrepreneur made it plain for the New York Times in 2006:  "Basically, some Baidu people sat down and did hundreds of searches for banned materials on Google. Then they took all the results, printed them up and went to the government and said, 'Look at all this bad stuff you can find on Google!" The government took Google offline.
Rupert Murdoch doesn't even see the point. During News Corp's last earnings call, a reporter asked chairman Rupert Murdoch if the company planned to invest anymore in China. Rupe, who has tried as hard as any Western businessman to crack that market, laughed off the notion. "We don't see anything to do that will make us a lot of money," he said. "In media, it's pretty much a no-no.""

"Imagine a world where everyone is equal, where nobody worries about their hospital, food, and where everybody can work without getting fired, where all stingy people get punished for not sharing society their wealth, where there is Universal Health Care for free, where there is public education given to everyone for free , where no war erupts, where there is no religious fights, where there is no discrimination on the “Special” ones. Sounds like heaven on the earth isn’t it? Is it a place where you want to live? Then go to North Korea, China, Cuba, where those kind of policy are ready to welcome you, You Lazy bastards, just remember, that your wealth, right as a human, freedom to make better choice, chances to protect yourself, Quality Medical care, freedom of speech that you enjoy to express your love on those Socialistic Idea and your motivation to do something would be lost forever. Scared? You better be, because you are the problem you moron. Just remember, by promoting those socialistic ideas that I mentioned above, that you are a traitor to our country, who breaks the idea of constitutional Republic that our fathers protected with their life during, Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars, Vietnam War, Korean War, Cold War and Etc"

"#1 - Does the U.S. Really Have More Oil than Saudi Arabia?"

    • People are often confused about the overall extent of U.S. oil reserves. Some claim that the U.S. has hundreds of billions or even trillions of barrels of oil waiting to be produced if bureaucrats will simply stop blocking development. In fact, in a recent debate between Republican candidates contending for Gabrielle Giffords' recently vacated House seat, one candidate declared "We have more oil in this country than in Saudi Arabia." So, I thought it might be a good idea to elaborate a bit on U.S. oil resources.

Oil production has been increasing in the U.S. for the past few years, primarily driven by expanding production from the Bakken Shale Formation in North Dakota and the Eagle Ford Shale in Texas. The oil that is being produced from these shale formations is sometimes improperly referred to as shale oil. But when some people speak of hundreds of billions or trillions of barrels of U.S. oil, they are most likely talking about the oil shale in the Green River Formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Since the shale in North Dakota and Texas is producing oil, some have assumed that the Green River Formation and its roughly 2 trillion barrels of oil resources will be developed next because they think it is a similar type of resource. But it is not.

    "Globalization, Guaranteed Income, Debt Reductions

"Globalization as has been managed seems a pact with the devil. We can ensure that globalization works, not only for the rich and powerful, but for everyone" said a message posted on the M5S blog with a link to a Stiglitz video "Make Globalization Work".

Grillo supports a concept of a guaranteed "citizenship income" for all, whose cost is estimated at between 20 and 30 billion euros.

M5S advocates "reducing the debt through strong interventions on the cost of the State with the fight against waste and the use of new technologies to make the citizen access to information and services without the need for intermediaries." It also provides for the abolition of stock options and cascades of holding for listed companies.
That is a substantially Mish-modified translation from French. I am not sure what "cascades of holding for listed companies" means.

It will be interesting to see what this collection of economists comes up with, because Grillo is eurosceptic and I doubt those whose advice Grillo seeks are in the same camp.

One thing is for sure: austerity is likely to head out the window, and that will cause fits in Brussels and Germany."

"Society has just begun to tap new renewable sources of energy from agriculture and forestlands on a commercial scale that impacts energy markets.  Among these sources are biofuels, a small but expanding component of current fuel consumption in the U.S. transport sector.  In 2011, biofuels accounted for roughly 10.6 percent of total transport fuel consumption, or 14.8 billion gallons, up from 13.2 billion gallons the previous year.  Ethanol, made mostly from corn starch from kernels, is by far the most significant biofuel in the United States, accounting for 98 percent of all biofuel production in 2011.  Most of the remainder is biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils (chiefly soy oil) as well as animal fats, waste oils, and greases.

The U.S. Bioenergy Statistics are a source of information on biofuels intended to present a picture of the renewable energy industry and its relationship to agriculture.  Where appropriate, data are presented in both a calendar year and the relevant marketing year timeframe to increase utility to feedstock-oriented users.  The statistics highlight the factors that influence the demand for agricultural feedstocks for biofuels production; for instance, numerous tables emphasize the relationship between energy and commodity markets.

ERS analysts track U.S. ethanol and biodiesel production, consumption, and trade. They also monitor and analyze U.S. bioenergy policy and events that affect the domestic and international biofuel and feedstock markets.  Additional tables will be added as new series become available."

"Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) grilled Defense Sec. Chuck Hagel on a Pentagon email warning Army officers to watch out for soldiers who do not support gay marriage or who disfavor Muslims, equating them with the Ku Klux Klan and Neo-Nazis.
The Pentagon officer who sent this email reportedly got his information from a radical, leftist anti-Christian organization linked to a convicted terrorist.
As reported by Fox News' Todd Starnes, Lt. Col. Jack Rich at Ft. Campbell sent an email warning Army officers to be on the lookout for soldiers connected with "domestic hate groups." In his 14-page email, Rich identified groups that support traditional marriage or advocate strict border enforcement regarding illegal aliens as domestic hate groups.
This story is disturbing for several reasons, one of which is this U.S. military email was reportedly using the "domestic hate group" list created by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). This radical-left organization has listed Christian organizations such as the American Family Association and Family Research Council (FRC), immigration reform groups such as FAIR, and various Tea Party organizations as "hate groups." The SPLC publicly claims they are no different than the KKK and Neo-Nazis, groups that engage in extreme violence and acts of terrorism.
Yet SPLC has itself now been linked to a domestic terrorist. As we covered in detail, on Aug. 15, 2012, Floyd Corkins attempted to go on a mass-shooting spree at FRC headquarters in Washington, D.C. with 100 rounds of ammunition. Corkins shot building manager Leo Johnson, yet the wounded Johnson disarmed Corkins, who was then captured alive.
As part of a plea deal, Corkins signed a full confession in which he admitted that he selected his targets from SPLC's hate group list and used the map SPLC put on its website to find FRC with the intent of murdering everyone in the building (several dozen people). He called himself a political activist and was going to kill everyone in the FRC building because FRC opposes redefining marriage to include gay marriage.
Corkins was convicted on Feb. 6, 2013, of committing acts of domestic terrorism.
It is profoundly disturbing that anyone in the U.S. military would use material from such ultra-left zealots, who label organizations that disagree with them on a range of issues-not just social issues like marriage, but also national security issues (immigration) and economic issues (Tea Party groups)-as "hate groups."
Yet SPLC is the only group here that has actually been linked to a terrorist, one who was inspired to commit his despicable crime by none other than the same SPLC whose material the Obama administration's military command is now using.
The terrible Boston bombing is a reminder what real terrorism looks like. The Obama administration needs to deal with this threat, not associate with radical-fringe organizations that convicted terrorists cite as their enablers."

Boehner Says House Will Produce Its Own Bill
MAY 24, 2013 BY DAN STEIN 3 COMMENTS
Boehner Says House Will Produce Its Own Bill
“House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been saying for months it’s up to the Senate to get the ball rolling on a major overhaul of the nation’s immigration system. When that happens, he said, the House will take a look,” PBS reports.
“But as Senate Majority Harry Reid, D-Nev., laid out the path forward for next month’s Senate debate on a comprehensive bill that seems to have wide support, Boehner cautioned that his chamber won’t just accept that measure, no matter how bipartisan.”
Libertarian Objections to Amnesty Bill Grow
“Does anyone else feel like the Obamcare model of government control is being adapted, with little improvement, to immigration policy?” says Ross Kaminsky at the American Spectator.
“The legislation would be anti-capitalist enough if its quotas were sufficiently high to allow most of the likely demand for foreign labor by American employers. But this is a bill that limits visas for construction workers to 15,000 per year and those for ‘qualified immigrants seeking to enter the United States for the purpose of creating new businesses’ to 10,000 per year. These are just two of the measure’s various ‘not to exceed’ limitations, which fly in the face of economic liberty and historical commonsense.”
3 Plead Guilty to Murdering Immigration Agent
“Three men have pleaded guilty in US federal court for the 2011 killing of a US immigration and customs agent and the attempted murder of a second agent, the Justice Department said. Julian Zapata Espinoza, 32, known as ‘Piolin,’ a commander in Los Zetas cartel, entered his plea on Thursday, according to a Justice Department statement that also announced previous guilty pleas from two other suspects,” Rawstory.com reports.
“The three admitted to being members of a hit squad for the drug cartel and to participating in the attack on the US agents.”
Flake Says Police Death Shows Need for Senate Bill
“Sen. John McCain joined other politicians and activists raising concerns about the immigration status of the owner of the SUV that investigators believe killed a Phoenix police officer last weekend. McCain sent an open letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Thursday asking detailed questions about the criminal history of the SUV’s owner, Jesus Cabrera Molina, and his interactions with the immigration system,” the Arizona Republic says.
“Earlier this week, Flake said the suspect’s immigration status only strengthens the case for the comprehensive immigration-reform legislation now under consideration in the Senate. ‘It makes the point that we’ve been making: We’ve got to have a better handle on who’s here and have an entry/exit system that works,’ Flake told The Arizona Republic.”

How would this bill give us a “better handle” on who’s here? It has no enforcement in it, so what changes, other than legalizing 12 million illegals? There’s no e-verify for five years, so employers will have a free pass to hire who they want in that time. Again, what changes? It’s more of the SAME INCENTIVES to stay here illegally. When all this was initially proposed there were many promises of “strict enforcement” policies, and they are not in there. And this will give the secretary of Homeland Security virtually unlimited discretion to suspend any enforcement measures and cancel any deportations. This fixes our “broken system” HOW? The answer is it doesn’t, it only makes things worse."

"Mayor in Spain leads food raids for the people

By Thomas J. Michalak on August 24, 2012 » Add the first comment.
    A revolutionary youth’s perspective

In the small Spanish town of Marinaleda, located in the southern region of Andalusía, Mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo has an answer for the country’s economic crisis and the hunger that comes with it: He organized and led the town’s residents to raid supermarkets to get the food necessary to survive.

Seven people have been arrested in two raids in which trade unionists loaded shopping carts full of food and left without paying, with the support of the townspeople cheering them on and the mayor watching with approval. (reuters.com, Aug. 15)

Gordillo, 60, is a leftist and a member of the Izquierda Unida political party. He sports a Palestinian kaffiyeh scarf around his neck and a Fidel Castro-like beard. Gordilla says he wants to draw attention to the plight of the common worker in Spain, a country in which the economic collapse has hit particularly hard and millions are suffering. (europeonline-magazine.eu, Aug. 14)

Since 2007, poverty in Spain has risen 15 percent, while unemployment hovers around 25 percent and tens of thousands have lost their homes to bank foreclosures. The conservative national government has only made matters worse, by introducing austerity measures that have worsened the workers’ lives, while bailing out the bankers and capitalists who caused the crisis in the first place.

Gordillo plans to lead a march from Jódar, one of the cities most affected by the current economic meltdown, to other Spanish towns, to try to convince other officials to fight back against the ruling class’s demands of cutbacks and increased hardship for the workers. He is fighting dismantlement of state social services, bank payoffs, and the throwing of the common Spaniard under the bus to the benefit of those exploiting them. Gordillo hopes he can convince other mayors to stage a real resistance to the government’s demands.

    Implementing ‘concrete well-being’

Despite the grave economic situation permeating the country, in the town of Marinaleda, population 2,600, there is no unemployment. The town is based around an agricultural collective established in the 1980s. Everyone living in Marinaleda is guaranteed employment, and earns 1,200 euros a month (about $1,440), in contrast to other Andalusians, one-third of whom are unemployed. A text on the town hall reads, “Freedom without equality is nothing, and democracy without concrete well-being for concrete people is only an empty word.”

It has become clear that with the present organization of society, there is no hope for prosperity for working people. Under capitalism, or “free enterprise,” there can be no hope for the masses. As the economic crisis continues to deepen, this will become more evident to all of those who are struggling to simply get by.

The consciousness of people all over the world is starting to develop, and they are beginning to realize that a new world is possible — one without crises, without unemployment, hunger, exploitation and all the other symptoms that come with a capitalist economy.

The people in Spain are starting to realize who is to blame. No amount of bourgeois budget cuts can save the Spanish economy, only struggle against the current social order. The same is true all over the capitalist world.

The writer is a youth activist in Detroit.

A new postmortem on the November elections from the nation’s leading voice for college Republicans offers a searing indictment of the GOP “brand” and the major challenges the party faces in wooing young voters, according to a copy given exclusively to POLITICO on Sunday.

The College Republican National Committee on Monday made public a detailed report — the result of extensive polling and focus groups — dissecting what went wrong for Republicans with young voters in the 2012 elections and how the party can improve its showing with that key demographic in the future.

It’s not a pretty picture. In fact, it’s a “dismal present situation,” the report says.

    (PHOTOS: 2016: Who’s next?)

The 95-page study, which looked at the party’s views on social and economic issues, as well as its messaging and outreach, echoes a March report on the election debacle issued by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, which presented a devastating assessment of the party’s current state of affairs.

But in some ways the new report from inside the GOP tent is even more scathing and ominous — since it comes from the party’s next generation.

Titled the “Grand Old Party for a Brand New Generation,” the report is sharply critical of the GOP on several fronts. The study slams some Republicans’ almost singular focus on downsizing Big Government and cutting taxes; candidates’ use of offensive, polarizing rhetoric; and the party’s belly-flop efforts at messaging and outreach, even as the report presents a way forward and, at times, strikes an optimistic tone.

    (PHOTOS: 15 memorable campaign slogans)

In the report, the young Republican activists acknowledge their party has suffered significant damage in recent years. A sampling of the critique on:

Gay marriage: “On the ‘open-minded’ issue … [w]e will face serious difficulty so long as the issue of gay marriage remains on the table.”

Hispanics: “Latino voters … tend to think the GOP couldn’t care less about them.”

Perception of the party’s economic stance: “We’ve become the party that will pat you on your back when you make it, but won’t offer you a hand to help you get there.”

Big reason for the image problem: The “outrageous statements made by errant Republican voices.”"
