Supported by the charities Missing People, the Who Cares Trust and the Children's Society, over the last few months they have taking evidence from children themselves who have run away, ministers, national agencies such as the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Agency and Ofsted, the voluntary sector, police forces and local authorities, which have all spoken about the need for change.

There is going to be a national contact point for runaway and missing children. It will be the national missing children’s helpline on 116000. It will be launched on 25 May-this month-on International Missing Children’s Day, so there will be that helpline available and it will be answered by the missing children’s charity.

The findings come a month after the conviction of nine men in Rochdale for sexually exploiting young girls. One of the girls was in care at the time and all were said to have been known to social services at some point.

There is a scandal going on in England involving children missing from care and until recent cases of child sexual exploitation in Rochdale and other places put the spotlight on this issue, it was pretty much going unnoticed. This inquiry has revealed the widespread concern that what we have in place at the moment falls dramatically short of what is needed to protect some of society's most vulnerable children. We know that dangerous predators are exploiting large gaps in the system and targeting children. Our inquiry has demonstrated how the system is far from fit for purpose and needs an urgent rethink to address these failings.

We now know, for example, that far too many children are sent to be cared for miles away from their homes. We need to do so much more to support vulnerable children who run away from care.'

England's children's homes are failing to protect vulnerable youngsters who run away or go missing, a new report by the all-party parliamentary group for runaway and missing children and adults has warned.
The report, which can be downloaded from the website of the charity Missing People, calls for urgent action to prevent children being sent to live in areas up to hundreds of miles from their family, which is believed to be a major factor in causing some of them to run away.
