A short article with tips on creating a homework friendly environment.
Kid homework is added stress for teachers, parents, and the kids. Kids want to come home and relax, parents just want to enjoy their kids but frequently kids come home with at least 1 hour of homework. Kids and parents seem overwhelmed, just wanting a break. Regular homework is an essential part of the curriculum for students to succeed. Teachers would love to dismiss homework but then they will not be able to target all of the required that they are responsible for to ensure students are prepared to proceed to the next grade level.
The first line of defense in reducing the stress of kid homework is creating a plan with your child. Your child needs to be a part of the process when deciding on a homework plan otherwise they will feel powerless and less willing to complete their homework. Often homework becomes a parent problem and it should not be. Students need to be responsible for their homework but parents can assist in creating a homework routine to reduce the attitude and tears about completing homework.
Designate an area in the home for kids to do their homework. Choose an area that is close to a parent or older sibling who will assist them with the homework if required. The most frustrating thing for the student is to find a parent for clarification of a problem. A simple 10 second question and answer has now taken 5 minutes.
Choose a time for homework. It is best for the student to have a break after school before having to begin their homework. It is best to have homework started before dinner and have time after dinner to finish up. You may set up two homework times depending on the amount of homework.
Provide breaks for your child during their homework time. Students do best working 20 minutes and having a 5 minute break. A child who has to sit until their homework is finished will take more time than a child who is given regular breaks because their mind begins to shut down and space out.
Have an abundance of school supplies readily available. Paper, pencils, markers and much more should be in the homework center to reduce the time your child spends looking for an eraser or other necessities.
Have consequences for your child if they do not do their homework. If homework is not completed because they decided to play, watch television or for any other reason there are consequences.
Work in partnership with the teacher and your child for creating a successful homework routine.
