Well, I'm not really into the military-style applications. I'd love to go to Mars with robots. Right now we have two robots on Mars. What if we had 2,000? We could cover a much larger area. But we can't communicate with 2,000 robots from Earth. It takes too long to get a signal to Mars. So they would have to be autonomous. They would have to work on their own and cooperate and communicate. But nobody has any idea how to program 2,000 robots right now. So I'm in an area where you can make a lot of strides.

One of the examples I've been talking about lately is earthquake rescue. Humans are completely inadequate to deal with the problems that happen after an earthquake. Either we are too weak in that we can't pick up the rubble, or we're too big and we can't go through the rubble.

Although a bit old, the project still shows how swarming robots can interact to pull objects. In this next video, the robots grab hold of an object and each other to pull a puck into a certain position. The puck itself is too big for just one robot to move, so the teamwork is key.

While most robot designers shoot for more capable and more complicated robots, the philosophy behind swarm robotics is totally different: make the robots as simple as possible, and let complex capabilities emerge from the cooperative powers of a whole bunch of them. We’re already familiar with macro-scale swarm robots, but researchers in Europe are trying to shrink things down to insect scale.

n a discussion with Michael Vose and Alden Wright uponj my arrival at Schloss Dagstuhl, we were wondering whether you could find a mathematical way to distinguish emergent behavior from an individual's behavior.

I do believe that "emergent behavior" is only in the eye of the beholder, but is not a concept that could be taken lightly. If the concept of "emergent behavior" is used to describe an observed phenomenon that was not anticipated for, a mathematical analysis should be undertaken to show where this new global behavior originates mathematically.
