    Sharing as we innovate:

    Stanford Online is a university-wide initiative coordinated by the Office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning (VPOL).

    VPOL advances faculty-driven online learning initiatives and research, providing exceptional educational opportunities to Stanford students by transforming the way learning is organized in our classrooms and far beyond them.

    We provide support to Stanford faculty and staff for course design and production, including instructional design services, content production, and online delivery.

    We foster collaboration with other education organizations by sharing course material, data-driven research, and source code for enhancements to our open-source platform OpenEdX.

    We continually experiment to improve what we do through creative use of technology, and we share what we learn with the rest of the world.

    At FutureLearn, we want to inspire learning for life. We offer a diverse selection of free, high quality online courses from some of the world's leading universities and other outstanding cultural institutions.

    Our aim is to connect learners from all over the globe with high quality educators, and with each other. We believe learning should be an enjoyable, social experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss what you've studied, in order to make fresh discoveries and form new ideas.

    Courses are delivered one step at a time, and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life, rather than your life around learning.

    We are a private company wholly owned by The Open University, with the benefit of over 40 years of their experience in distance learning and online education. Our partners include over 20 of the best UK and international universities, as well as institutions with a huge archive of cultural and educational material, including the British Council, the British Library, and the British Museum.

    FutureLearn is in beta and the courses we'll be running this year - there are many more on the way - are all pilot courses. This allows us to shape and refine how it all works, using feedback and ideas from our learners. It is important to us to craft a high quality product which is tailored specifically to our learners' needs, so we want to spend the time listening.

    What you're seeing is the smallest number of features that can deliver our vision for a new form of education. Over the coming months, as we unveil new courses, we'll be developing new features and evolving our offer.

    So we're looking to our first learners to tell us about their experience of the site and suggest improvements. We include a 'Feedback' tab on the left of every page, so please feel free to click if something occurs to you. Alternatively you can email us at feedback@futurelearn.com. We'll try to respond to as many ideas as we can and will address the most popular suggestions.

    You are visiting the portal of a pan-European initiative OpenupEd around so-called MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). The OpenupEd initiative was launched on April 25th 2013 in an online international press event. OpenupEd is a quality brand and partners are collaborating on those MOOCs that really focus on opening up education for all. Although there's a clear diversity of institutional approaches, the partnership has agreed on a framework of eight common features for its MOOCs in order to open up education to a maximum level.

    omslagbeeld main

    OpenupEd is the first MOOCs initiative which goes Europe-wide, with the support of the European Commission. This MOOC initiative has been named OpenupEd and refers indirectly to the new European program Opening up Education launched on 25 September 2013.

    At the start in April 2013 we offered around 40 courses, covering a wide variety of subjects, are available, in 12 different languages. From October 2013 80 MOOCs are offered, and another 100 will follow shortly. Already at the start we offered MOOCs with the possibility to obtain a formal certificate, i.e. official credits that can count towards obtaining a degree.

    OpenupEd has been initiated and is coordinated by the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU) and mostly involves open universities. The 11 launch partners are based in France, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and the UK, and outside the EU in Russia, Turkey and Israel. Another 10 institutions confirmed that they most likely will join this initiative in the near future. About 20 institutions showing serious interest in becoming partner of OpenupEd.

    Please feel invited and explore this portal, discover a course you like, in a language you prefer, and with a model that suits you.

    EdX was created for students and institutions that seek to transform themselves through cutting-edge technologies, innovative pedagogy, and rigorous courses.

    Through our institutional partners, the XConsortium, we present the best of higher education online, offering opportunity to anyone who wants to achieve, thrive, and grow.

    Our aim is to become a leading resource for learners and learning worldwide by staying focused on the goals and principles set forth when forming edX:

    The institution of the university has changed relatively little since the days of Gutenberg. Students’ use of technology, however, has. The Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. Today, we share ideas online.
    Let's take the campus experience online!

    The transformative potential of the Internet has yet to be utilized by the very institution that spawned it. As we move further into the digital age, it is becoming clear that the walled-in software solutions universities use today are glaringly outdated.
    We want to move beyond the existing teaching formats to enable wholly new forms of online teaching and learning. In order to develop open courses we call upon individual instructors, universities and knowledge-based companies to join us in this effort to democratize education.
    Our open course platform provides…

    a structured course environment that features multimedia teaching materials;
    assessment features such as multiple choice and peer review in order to keep students engaged and provide them with quantitative and qualitative feedback;
    a discussion board where students can engage in peer-to-peer learning by asking and answering questions or sharing links, references and general observations;
    We want to develop world-class courses that allow students to learn in an efficient and effective way. However, our aim is not to replace the university or the academics that work there. Our aim is to empower them. We want to allow the best professors to teach thousands of students. On the other hand we want to enable students to take classes from the best professors around the globe. In so doing we want to improve the quality of teaching at existing institutions, without raising the cost of instruction. We believe that open courses can be an important factor in that equation.
    Who are we?

    We are a diverse interdisciplinary team from Berlin. We’ve attended some of the world’s finest institutions. Yet, wherever we went, we were frustrated by the dearth of digital infrastructure in use. That’s why we set out to garner the wealth of opportunities to improve the quality of teaching and learning for future generations of students.
