Raise dues? I guarantee this lodge will be out of business in 5 years or less

    • Special $35 fee levied by Holyoke Elks Sunday, February 05, 2006 By DAVID REID dreid@repub.com  HOLYOKE - The Holyoke Lodge of Elks 902 has voted to institute a one-time, $35 "special assessment" to its members to help the fraternal club turn around an unprofitable financial picture.  In a letter this month to the club's approximately 1,000 members, Exalted Ruler Robert F. Zajac described the Jan. 10 vote as "the first step forward to becoming profitable again." It did not state how deep the deficit is, however.  The voluntary assessment comes on top of annual dues that are $65, which are due April 1, but Zajac has encouraged members to pay up now.  In December, the Republican detailed a $12,000 lien placed on the club by the state Department of Revenue for unpaid state meals taxes dating to 2003, and a damaging Sept. 19 break-in and robbery of thousands of dollars.  At the time, club treasurer Robert F. Kane said he had met with state officials, who told him they were "not interested in closing the place down."  Zajac's message, contained in the club's February bulletin, said former Elks treasurer David B. Donoghue explained to 120 members last month "that costs every year have risen and we haven't had an increase in dues to compensate (for) these increases for over 10 years." Trustees are expected to propose $100 annual fees starting next year, and may propose boosting cheap drink prices as well.
    • The Elks Make a Comeback  ( Air Date: 11/18/2006 ) The Elks are back in town. Their fight to restore the local fraternal organization ends with success. The St. Joseph Elk`s Lodge is now officially a charter once again after closing its doors fifteen years ago. About 60 members were initiated today and officers installed but doing good wasn`t always easy to do for the charitable organization.  Ninety-five-year-old Max Frye watches his granddaughter join the Elks. He`s been a member since 1937. Frye said, "Besides my family, it`s been the biggest part of my life." His grandaughter Amanda Cook said, "The first time I was 8 years old. That`s my last memory of the Elks because my grandfather was involved in it forever. Then through my teen years the Elks wasn`t here in St. Joe anymore. When I heard it was coming back, I knew my husband and I should join."
    • Elks officials decide to establish new lodge in Lakewood Ranch TIFFANY ST. MARTIN Herald Staff Writer LAKEWOOD RANCH - With a number of "stray Elks" living in Lakewood Ranch and many new families in the community, a committee that establishes new lodges in Southwest Florida has decided a Lakewood Ranch Elks lodge is in order.  This will give residents the opportunity to become charter members of a new lodge, which in Elkdom is quite a big deal, said Bob Erwin. great effort going on here. however, the statutes have changed. only 50 members needed to file for a charter. Surely they know that. the difference between 50 and 100 is huge and i'll bet this lodge won't get off the ground because of it.

    • The up-and-coming Lakewood Ranch Elks lodge is planning a membership... LAKEWOOD RANCH --The up-and-coming Lakewood Ranch Elks lodge is planning a membership drive during an afternoon of family activities from noon to 4 p.m. June 23 at Summerfield Park. Open to the public, the event will educate participants about what the Elks do and how to become a member, said Bob Erwin, chairman of the committee that organizes new Elks lodges in Southwest Florida.

    • A year after officially being established in Gilbert, the first and only local chapter of the Elks lodge is still looking for a permanent home.   The Gilbert Elks became an official chapter of the national Elks club on Oct. 8, 2006, and have been searching for a long-term place to meet ever since, with little success.   Elks spokesman Ken Palmrose, a 62-year-old U.S. Forest Service retiree from Oregon, said the group has been unable to find a venue that fits its needs, preferred location, and budget as of yet.  “The need for a permanent facility in Gilbert is immediate so that we may continue our charitable work in the community,” he said.   The group is looking for a site with several thousand square feet and kitchen facilities for its meetings and social events.  The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA is a national fraternal, social and charitable organization with more than 1.6 million members in some 2,200 lodges nationwide.   While the Gilbert Elks have only officially existed for a year, many of the group’s 110 members have been involved in local community service projects for years. Palmrose said the group has not allowed its lack of a headquarters to impede its progress in promoting local welfare.  The group currently meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at the Maricopa Learning Center in Gilbert, where it performs an introductory ritual before diving right into discussion about various charitable endeavors.  The Elks are preparing to host the second Gilbert “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest, the largest and most visible youth activity sponsored by Elks nationwide. More than 3 million boys and girls ages 8 to 13 are expected to participate in the event in February across the country.  In addition to the Hoop Shoot, local Elks are working on shipping goods to U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The Elks are also hoping to raise money to fund a lodge during this year’s Christmas Dinner and Dance on T

Finding enough members who want to join the long-running organization is key.

"If you often see need in the community but don't know how to go about meeting it, the proposed Mount Pleasant Elks Lodge might be for you.

Leaders, including acting exalted ruler Michael Fenwrick of West Ashley, have been working for the past year to attract enough members to start an Elks Lodge in Mount Pleasant. They need about 20 more members to reach the 100 necessary for a charter. "
