    • Texas Hold 'Em is newest game in town By BRENDAN KACHEL Southwest Daily Times Over the sound of talking in the Elks Lodge Tuesday evening was the distinctive sound of poker chips clicking together as local poker enthusiasts tossed chips into the pile or toyed with chips in their stacks. Tuesdays and Thursdays are poker nights at the Elks Lodge. The games are hosted by www.barpoker.com, a tournament that allows local players a shot at a seat in the World Series of Poker. Bill Harrison, who helps out at the poker tournaments, explained the rules. At each poker night, which is free to play in as long as the player is 21 or older, each player gains 50 points. If a player makes it to the final table of eight competitors, they can win even more points. If they are within the top 120 players in points, they are invited to the monthly tournaments, which are conducted around the state and where the players have a chance at a top prize of $1,000, as well as a chance to compete in the Kansas Poker Championship.

    • Texas Hold 'em like a ride on a roller coaster  Earl Watt FOURTH AND GOAL Some faces I knew, others I didn't. But the cards were the same 52 I had played with since my Grandpa dealt me in when I was old enough to count to 10. The game wasn't for money, so I had nothing to lose. Still, the competitive fire was there as the more experienced players welcomed me to the table and coached me along as I learned about betting blind, turning and burning, and what to do when someone goes all in. It was 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the Liberal Elks Lodge in the first session of Texas Hold 'em. To my amazement, I wasn't the first to lose my house complement of chips as a kind hand here and there kept me in the game.

    • Those Elks in Jackson, CA really know how to do it up! We need some place like this in LA, where the Mayor can go and have a good time without worrying about reporters bothering him. Unless the reporter is the one undoing his pants, then that’s OK. *Photo credit, ME!
