    • Blue Springs Elks planning memorial for 62 members By The Examiner staff  Sixty-two deceased members of Blue Springs Lodge No. 2509 of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will be honored Dec. 5 at a memorial service.  The 1 p.m. service will be at the Elks Lodge, 900 N.W. Ves per St., Blue Springs. A luncheon follows the service.  All family members and friends of the following de ceased brothers are invited to attend:
    • Elks lodge slates memorial service  By Journal Staff     POCATELLO - The Pocatello Elks Lodge No. 674 will have its annual memorial service to honor deceased members on Sunday at 1 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 410 S. Main St.  Exalted Ruler Donna Fitzsimmons and her officers will conduct the ceremony, according to a press release. The Does Drove No. 153 will perform the Elks Rest.     All the families and friends of deceased Elks are invited to attend. The public is welcome to attend the memorial service.
    • Toledo Elks hold memorial service  The Toledo Elks Lodge will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday at the lodge. This annual event honors members who have passed away during the year with a candle lighting ceremony and inscription of names on "The Tablets of Memory."  Eighteen members will be honored this year, including Ralph Toering, Walter Fisher, Robert J. Brayton, William F. Patt, Arthur W. Johnson, George Lechner, Francis Olsen, John D. Stock, Alton G. St. Clair, Edward C. McElroy, Jr., Thomas Rokos, Wallace Hutton, Marion L. Huff, Larry Hart, Vernon Cusick, Elmer N. Sondenaa, Ralph Wagner and John Folwell.  Family members are cordially invited to attend the ceremony. Refreshments will be served following the service.
    • On Sunday, Dec. 5, the Sayre Elks Lodge will hold a formal Flag Retirement Ceremony.   This is a special service ritual of the BPOE organization but has not been done in Sayre for a number of years. A spokesman says: Our flag is our symbol of strength and unity and deserves to be properly retired when no longer in proper condition to be flown. Any private citizen or Elks member who has any worn and tattered flags is invited to drop them off at the Sayre Lodge on 117 S. Elmer Ave. in Sayre by Saturday, Dec. 4, so that the flags can be properly folded for the ceremony. All members and citizens are invited to attend this brief but reverent ceremony that will begin 4:45 to 5 p.m., directly after the annual memorial service, which begins at 4 p.m. Both of these services are very moving and touching. Light refreshments and a time a fellowship will follow the ceremonies.
    • Elks offer remembrance  By BETHANY GORDON  Staff Writer  GILFORD — The Laconia Lodge of Elks 876 gathered Sunday afternoon for an annual memorial event to honor Elks who died in the past year.  Exalted Ruler of the Laconia Elks Sandra Shen said the event served as a memorial service for friends, family members, and fellow Elks to remember their brothers and sisters.  Shen, along with secretary Donald Fletcher, Loyal Knight Harold Perkins, Leading Knight Andy Daigneau, Chaplin George McGrath, Tiler Roberta Boynton and Lecturing Knight Lester Boynton, offered an opening prayer as well as a reading from the Bible at Sunday’s event. Candles were lighted and carnations were arranged in honor of those who died.  Fletcher then performed an official roll call of absent members who have died in the past year.  More than 20 members’ names were called, as their friends and fellow Elks bowed their heads.  Among those named was Mark Miller, a Laconia firefighter who drowned on March 11 in Lake Winnipesaukee, and former Exalted Elks Ruler Douglas Truell.
    • Article Last Updated: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 - 5:30:44 PM MST  Elks memorial service held by lodge and Does  The Fort Morgan Elks Lodge and the Fort Morgan Does Drove held their annual memorial service for departed Elks members for 2004 Sunday afternoon at the lodge.  A memorial ritual was performed by both the Elks and Does officers, and flowers and Bibles were handed out to the family members in attedance.  Deceased members include CD "Curly" Garver, Glen Yearous, Howard J. Weimer, Melvin Schauermann, Robert Turcott, Donald Christensen, Gerald Baugh, Leon D. Irey, Morton Boxer, Herbert Yenne, James Allen, Jon Bretey, Gilbert Laporte and Vaun Bolingbroke.  After the ceremony the Elks served refreshments.  O
    • Memorial honors Todd Kauppila    CAROL A. CLARK, lanews@lamonitor.com, Monitor Staff Writer  A memorial honoring Todd Kauppila was attended by more than 1,000 people at Ashley Pond Thursday.  Kauppila, 40, died Sunday at the Los Alamos Medical Center of hemorrhagic pancreatitis. The nuclear scientist worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory for 21 years.  LANL Senior Fellow Houston (Terry) Hawkins from the Office of the Director attended the memorial as a private citizen. He spoke before the Kauppila family and crowd of mourners even though the two had never met.  "In 1623, John Donne wrote, 'Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee'," Hawkins said. "Strange is it not how these poignant words written so long ago echo this day among the stiff scarred canyons of Los Alamos," Hawkins said.

Members who will be memorialized include: James J. Sedillo, Thomas Tissaw, Floyd Hicks, John Hemmings, Raymond Gonzales, George McGregor, Martin Merryman, David Stinson, Byron Martin, T. Hank Anderson, Otis Baker, Terry Kerby, John R. Gibson Sr., and Donald G. Pickett.
    • Elks honor late members Thursday, December 1, 2005  On Sunday, Dec. 4, the Watertown Elks will hold their annual Memorial Sunday Services to honor their departed members, especially those who have passed away this past year. Those to be specially noted this year are life members George L. Thompson Sr. and Peter A. Dillberto, and honorary life member John Milley, past exalted ruler.   The services will be held at the Elks Lodge, 268 Arlington St., Watertown, at 11 a.m. Guest speakers will be Michael Sullivan, mayor of Cambridge, Joseph D. Antonietta, Mass. Elks past state president, and Donna Mazzola, past president of the Mass. State Association of Emblem Clubs and current recording secretary for the Supreme Emblem Club of the United States of America.
    • SAYRE BOROUGH -- Fifteen members who passed away in the last year were remembered in a ceremony Sunday at the Elks club.     "It's just a final tribute," Exalted Ruler Thomas Cocco said. "It's the last time their name is ever mentioned on the lodge floor. It's a final farewell."  In his address, former Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Tom Struble read a poem, "If Tomorrow Never Comes."  Other participants in the program included Mary Olisky, who performed the hymns "Here, O Lord," "How Great Thou Art," and "Softly and Tenderly"; chaplain Donna Shipman, who offered the invocation and benediction; Secretary Helen Lohmann, who did the roll call; Past Exalted Ruler Ruth Owen, who offered the "11 o'clock toast"; and Angela Lynch and Lila Mullholland, acolytes. Sue Flynn performed the prelude. To conclude the service, Darren Reilly performed taps. A page in the program shared the story of the origin of the melody, which dates to the Civil War.

    • Elks began as an acting group  Written by Tooele Transcript   Thursday, 08 December 2005  Sunday, Dec. 4, the Tooele Elks Lodge held a Memorial Service and paid tribute to the 234 members who have departed since its beginning on July 16, 1945.  This tradition was started by a group of theatrical professionals know as the "Jolly Corks" on Feb. 16, 1868, shortly after one of their members died. After the funeral of their friend, as the "Jolly Corks" looked into the faces of the destitute young widow and small children and decided that their organization should become a protective and benevolent society.
    • Coloradans Observe 5th Anniversary Of 9/11 (AP) ARVADA, Colo. Coloradans observed the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks quietly on Monday, with flags lowered to half-staff but only small gatherings.  "We didn't want any formal remembrance, we wanted to leave it national," Gov. Bill Owens said.  Aurora Public Schools Superintendent John L. Barry, a retired Air Force major general who said he was in the Pentagon when a hijacked airliner crashed into the building on Sept. 11, 2001, met with students at Vassar Elementary School.

He said that 9/11 is a day that is close to each American's heart and that it has touched everybody.
