May 12, 2009 — Third-graders at Fletcher Walker Elementary each received a dictionary from members of the Elks Lodge in Susanville. Russell Brown, a former exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge, distributed the books Tuesday, May 5.
The dictionaries are purchased through contributions from local Elks members and given to all third-grade students in Lassen County.
San Fernando Elks Lodge 1539 Donates Two Thousand Dictionaries
Third-graders Anthonie Cooper, Isavel Cantero, Evanny Toxqui, Eileen Solis and Kaylea Borquist, along with Sun City Elks Americanism Chairman Dave Buchanan, display the students’ new dictionaries after a presentation Friday at Arizona Charter Academy in Surprise.
The Watertown Elks are distributing free dictionary reference books to all of the public school third-grade classes in Watertown, Jefferson, Johnson Creek and Lake Mills.
The local Dictionary Project is being funded through a donation from the Watertown Elks Lodge.
The idea for The Dictionary Project began in 1992 when Annie Plummer of Savannah, Ga., gave 50 dictionaries to children who attended a school close to her home. Each year she continued to give this gift, raising money to help give more and more books so that in her lifetime she raised enough money to buy 17,000 dictionaries for children in Savannah.
