SUNBURY — The Daily Item, The Danville News and Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. are again sponsoring a flag retirement project in which people can turn in their old American flags. The project will culminate in a public flag retirement ceremony at 7 p.m. on Flag Day, June 14, at American Legion Post 44, along Route 11 near Northumberland. Janet A. Tippett, president and publisher of The Daily Item and The Danville News, and Roger S. Haddon Jr., president and chief executive officer of Sunbury Broadcasting Corp., are pleased to join in this special Flag Day effort. Old, torn, faded and tattered flags will be accepted through June 14 at The Daily Item, The Danville News, Sunbury Broadcasting Corp., and at Valley American Legion posts and Elks lodges. About 4,000 worn and tattered flags were collected last year in Northumberland, Snyder, Union, Montour and Columbia counties for proper disposal.
