Tools of the Trade
One of the best tools for creating on-the-fly, informal screencasts from your browser! Just be aware that all screencasts you create will be public. Consider logging in to Screenr with an account so you can save your screencasts.
Like Screenr, Screencast-O-Matic allows you to record your screen (or webcam) from your browser and export the video in a variety of ways. The PRO account is $15/yr and definitely worth it if you want a middle solution between Screenr and Camtasia.

An introduction to screencasting and the different types of screencasts from the perspective of a math professor:
"A screencast is a video of stuff that is happening on your computer screen. There is often, but not always, some kind of voiceover happening in the background as well. So a screencast can be a lot of different things: A recorded Prezi or PowerPoint slide presentation; a demo of computer software; a 'whiteboard' lecture with audio capture; a video of you playing Angry Birds; or any linear combination of these."
The basic gist behind a lecture capture is that you are just using a presentation tool to give a normal presentation, and capturing the audio and the video that goes with it.
Write complete scripts, record audio first then video, use a good external mic, use a dog clicker to note mistakes.
A frank list of common mistakes and issues with online screencasts. Very relevant if you are looking to share your screencasts with a wide/public audience.
