Matthew Cox's List: DGL Vocabulary

    • digital literacy = digital tool knowledge + critical thinking + social engagement. Then it's worth knowing its main characteristics:

      • It supports and helps develop traditional literacies
      • It's a life-long practice
      • It's about skills, competencies and critical reflection on how these skills and competencies are applied
      • It's about social engagement

    • Digital citizenship can be defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use
    • 7.   Digital Rights & Responsibilities:   those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world.

Just as in the American Constitution where there is a Bill of Rights, there is a basic set of rights extended to every digital citizen. Digital citizens have the right to privacy, free speech, etc. Basic digital rights must be addressed, discussed, and understood in the digital world.  With these rights also come responsibilities as well.  Users must help define how the technology is to be used in an appropriate manner.  In a digital society these two areas must work together for everyone to be productive.
    • Digital identity refers to any digital representation (whole or partial)
      of an entity,
      in tangible or abstract form,
      either self-created,
      externally assigned
      or consequentially generate
    • Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action
    • In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.

    • Copyright:

A form  of protection provided by the laws of the United States for "original works  of authorship", including literary, dramatic, musical, architectural, cartographic,  choreographic, pantomimic, pictorial, graphic, sculptural, and audiovisual  creations.   "Copyright" literally means the right to copy but has come to mean that body  of exclusive rights granted by law to copyright owners for protection of their  work. Copyright protection does not extend to any idea, procedure, process,  system, title, principle, or discovery. Similarly, names, titles, short phrases,  slogans, familiar symbols, mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering,  coloring, and listings of contents or ingredients are not subject to copyright.

    • an individual in public has no protection against a variety of surveillance measures or against the government looking at a person's digital records with third-party companies like ISPs, online merchants or credit card vendors
    • Privacy expert and George Washington University Professor of Law Daniel Solove, who has provided insight to the statewide UC initiative, told the ACLU's Blog of Rights that "Courts and legislators often are too deferential to whatever measures security officials propose … when privacy is balanced against security, security often wins because the well-being of the many outweighs the interests of one person. This is a faulty way to see privacy."

    • Blogging, above all else, is conversational. It is social. It is networked. There are two key features to the blog: links, and comments. Fail to include either, and you’re talking to yourself.
    • Blogging is also incomplete, open, and ongoing. It is about process, not product. It is about a shared space.

    • Academic Integrity can be defined by honest academic work where (1) the ideas and the writing of others are properly cited; (2) students submit their own work for tests and assignments without unauthorized assistance; (3) students do not provide unauthorized assistance to others; and (4) students report their research or accomplishments accurately
    • A reasonable way to define “viral success” for view counts is similar to how teachers define getting an “A” and that is performing in the top 5% of the class. Guess how many views you need to get to be in the top 5% of YouTube? 10,000.
