Against the current economic backdrop, I have reviewed the decision to hold the main Sakai 2011 community conference in Berlin. This review has not been undertaken in isolation; I have consulted widely within the community regarding intended travel plans, and also taken the professional opinion of conference planners with experience of open and community source events. Given out-of-country travel restrictions being imposed in universities and colleges throughout the world, and the straitened financial circumstances facing higher and tertiary education generally, I have decided it would be imprudent to continue to organize the conference in Berlin.
Concepts
Concepts discussed during the class session.
A - Attention (Awareness): attract the attention of the customer.
I - Interest: raise customer interest by focusing on and demonstrating advantages and benefits (instead of focusing on features, as in traditional advertising).
D - Desire: convince customers that they want and desire the product or service and that it will satisfy their needs.
A - Action: lead customers towards taking action and/or purchasing.

Citizen journalism refers to a wide range of activities in which everyday people contribute information or commentary about news events. With the birth of digital technologies, people now have unprecedented access to the tools of production and dissemination. Citizen journalism epitomizes the belief that the experiences of people personally involved with an issue present a different -- and often more complete -- picture of events than can be derived from the perspective of an outsider. Citizen journalism encompasses content ranging from user-submitted reviews on a Web site about movies to wiki-based news. It forces contributors to think objectively, asking probing questions and working to understand the context -- the kinds of activities that lead to deeper learning.
While doing research for a recent workshop, I came across a useful list of seven social software elements. These seven building blocks--identity, presence, relationships, conversations, groups, reputation and sharing--provide a good functional definition for social software. They're also a solid foundation for thinking about how social software works.
"The use of the multiple channels ensures that your news and content and marketing is not trapped within one insular group and has the best chance of spreading."
" The Twitter stream was initially upset that I was talking too fast. My first response to this was: OMG, seriously? That was it? Cuz that’s not how I read the situation on stage. So rather than getting through to me that I should slow down, I was hearing the audience as saying that I sucked. And responding the exact opposite way the audience wanted me to. This pushed the audience to actually start critiquing me in the way that I was imagining it was. "
