Pictures reef restoration
"Estuarial wildlife in Southwest Florida is in crisis. Watersheds, built to
accommodate booms in urbanization, drain into the estuaries, compromising water
quality. The Coastal Watershed Institute at Florida Gulf Coast University hopes
to negate some of this ecological damage through a large scale restoration
project of oyster reefs, which filter water while providing food and habitat for
fish, birds, and mammals."
"Oyster reefs are built primarily by the eastern oyster,
Crassostrea virginica. Oyster reefs are built via the successive
reproduction and settlement of larvae onto hard structures such as existing
oyster reefs, pilings, rocks, downed trees and recycled oyster shell. Thus, with
continued settlement and subsequent generational growth, oysters may form
massive reef structures in estuarine systems."
"An oyster is a sea animal with a soft body inside a hard, two-piece shell.
Some kinds of oysters can make a beautiful gem called a pearl. Oysters live
along coasts in areas with mild water. People catch and eat millions of oysters
every year."
