THIS is for Michigan zone but very informative for animal classification! "Here is information about many common animals found in Michigan, and a few that live in other places. You could find many of these animals in or around your schoolyard."
"What is it about the common oyster that inspires thousands of volunteers to give up days and weeks of their time? It isn’t just that oysters are delicious.Along Florida’s coasts, folks understand the
important role oysters play in filtering our water and stabilizing eroding coastlines. Oysters also support a healthy ecosystem that offers a prime nursery habitat for fish, crab, shrimp and other critters."
"The Giant Japanese Hornet is the fiercest looking insect on earth, and one of
the deadliest. This excerpt from a BBC documentary shows about 30 hornets
attacking an entire hive of honeybees. The considerably larger hornets attack
the bees and tear them apart in a few hours. At 2 in (5 cm) long and with a
wingspan of about 3 inches (7.6 cm), there are not many insects that can get in
its way. The smaller honeybees are from Europe and have never faced such a
predator making them more vulnerable to attacks."
A dragonfly has a life span of more than a year, but very little of that life is actually as an adult dragonfly. There are three stages of the dragonfly life cycle, the egg, the nymph, and the adult dragonfly. Most of the life cycle of a dragonfly is lived out in the nymph stage and you don’t see them at all, unless you are swimming underwater in a lake or pond with your eyes opened, of course.
Have you ever captured a glowing firefly? On a warm summer evening, a firefly’s light seems rare and magical. Yet the tree of life is spangled with organisms that blink, glow, flash, and glitter. Welcome to the world of bioluminescence—the generation of light by living things.
"Mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish all have something in common - they all have a backbone. Here are the basics on each group. "
"What is an arthropod? You live with them almost everyday, even in the very cold winter months! They are everywhere and are the largest animal phylum -- about 85% of all known animals in the world are part of this class. There are far more species of arthropods than there are species in all the other phylums(phyla) combined. "
"Arthropods are animals with segmented bodies and six or more jointed legs. They are the largest animal group on Earth. In fact, more than three out of four of all animals are arthropods. They are found everywhere - on land, in trees, in freshwater and saltwater, and even underground. Arthropods are generally small. Most are less than 1 cm long. "
"Introducing the arthropods
Chances are that you are interacting with arthropods on a daily basis — in your garden, in a nearby stream, in your home, on your dinner table, and perhaps even on your pet! Arthropods abound!
