• Last is the schwa, the most common sound in American  English. When you work on the practice paragraph, depending on how fast you  speak, how smoothly you make liaisons, how strong your intonation is, how much  you relax your sounds, you will find from 50 to 75 schwas. Spelling doesn't help  identify it, because it can appear as any one of the vowels, or a combination of  them. It is a neutral vowel sound, uh. It is usually in an unstressed syllable,  though it can be stressed as well.

• Because an ample vocabulary is such a valuable asset in life, it is important to make continued efforts toward building its size and strength.  This is not a one-time endeavor, but rather a lifetime project.  From infancy to adulthood, we capture new words and integrate them into our daily life.  Some, of course, we use more than others, but by paying attention to even those words that we seldom use, we are growing our brainpower, and ultimately our character.

• If you don't have a vocabulary building tool, you can still build your vocabulary with a bit of work. The first thing you should do is keep a diary of unfamiliar words as you encounter them in real life. Refer to the diary every day and practice using the new words as often as possible.

   

  To be confident using a word, you need to practice it in real conversations. The importance of this can't be stressed enough. This is especially true for business situations. If you aren't confident using words, you will appear tentative and weak.

  Your diction is simply your choice of words. There is no single, correct diction in the English language; instead, you choose different words or phrases for different contexts:

  "a screw-up"

  "a mistake"

   

  To the police

   

  "an accident"

   

  To an employer

   

  "an oversight"

   

   

  All of these expressions mean the same thing -- that is, they have the same denotation -- but you would not likely switch one for the other in any of these three situations: a police officer or employer would take "screw-up" as an insult, while your friends at the bar after a hockey game would take "oversight" as an affectation.
