Great 5-minute subcaptioned video from CAST shows main points of UDL
Recommended if you're just learning about UDL. Great one-hour presentation by UDL master of metaphor David Rose. In this presentation, David uses music to introduce principles of UDL. Get your Kleenex ready because the ending is a real tear-jerker!
Great UDL cartoon about benefits of planning for students "in the margins" and how the supports for those students benefit all.
Click on What is UD? Tab for definition of Universal Design. Ron Mace was an architect who pioneered the concept of UD in architecture and product design.
Recommended if you're just learning about Universal Design for Learning. Early book by David Rose and Anne Meyer about UDL now available online at CAST. The online book is very interactive with links to supporting videos and resources. Chapter 8 on successful UDL implementation may be of particular interest to administrators.
This is the second version of the UDL Guidelines. Click on each to learn more and link to large lists of supporting research.
Very concise summary of 6 elements of design for a great presentation summarized from Daniel Pink's book. In presenting about UDL we need to be sure we are presenting in a UDL compatible manner. I usually include this in lists of websites used in a presentation because I've gone completely away from using PPT and use Notebook software instead, trying to follow Reynold's advice.
Most BC School Districts have subscriptions. New features include text to speech and word definitions. Also new activities for early learners, drama, French.
Online resources to match pages in BC Science 8 Text. The teacher's section and home version sections are password-protected but if your school owns 30 copies of the print text you can have access to the home version. Home version includes downloadable chapters, pre-reading, worksheets, note-taking organizers, self-quizzes.
Educational videos subscription site. They have a selection of free movies and also a free trial subscription.
Subscription site presents reading materials at 3 levels for each subject. Click on What's in the News to see free sample of current science topic.
Awesome website with activties and reading for students who need picture support. For example, the science section could be used to do research that parallels what the class is doing. Also includes current events, recipes.
Excellent multiple means of representation tool. Shahi is a visual dictionary that combines definitions of words from Wiktionary with a sidebar of photos from flickr, Google, and Yahoo. The photos help to give a quick impression of the word and are live links. The free NaturalReader TTS tool will read the definitions. I looked up "rainbow, psychology, and mitosis" and was really happy with the results.
Simple Wikipedia is designed for people whose first language is not English and require simpler encyclopedia entires. This makes it a great research site for younger students or students who have difficulty with complicated text.
The aim of WatchKnow is to collaboratively index all of the educational videos online in one searchable repository. There are currently over 30,000 teacher indexed videos available. The videos are described and rated.
Paul Hamilton's brilliant new website has a great introduction to UDL and many resources organized by the UDL guidelines of multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement.
SET-BC consultant Paul Hamilton's blog on AT resources. Paul finds the latest Web 2.0 apps, tries them out, and reviews them. He provides a screen shot and enough info that you can usually tell which apps are worth further investigating. I've invited Paul to join this group. He's definitely your goto guy if you're looking for a particular app.
Team leaders in the BC UDL Project met online weekly to discuss each of the 12 UDL principles in David Rose's book Teaching Every Student in the Digital age. Chat pod records of their discussion and resources gathered to illustrate each UDL principle are presented on the website.
I created this wiki to support inclusion of SET-BC students in the regular curriculum grades 4/5 but starting to branch into grade 6/7.
Wiki I created to document what's happening as I work with a group of grade 8 teachers who want to help students acquire more tools and skills (both high and low tech) for use in high school. Based on Ira Socol's Toolbelt Theory.
