• Haunted High?  Some Say Camera Captured Ghost at Asheville High School

• Is an area high school haunted?  Asheville is abuzz after video was captured by a motion-activated camera at Asheville High school at 2:51 a.m. Friday, August 1. 
• In the video, a dark image –some say looks like the silhouette of a child- appears by an elevator.  The image advances forward and is again captured in the hallway. 
• It’s something, so far, the Asheville School District says can’t be explained. 
• Charlie Glazener, Executive Director of Public Relations for the District says, “I’m a logical person, and I wanted to be able to explain to these folks, or anybody, this is what I think it is.
• It’s a bat flying around here, and it casts a shadow; but then why is the shadow down here from a different angle, and it’s not in the shape of a bat?”
• It’s that shadow cast on the floor that has even the skeptics perplexed.
• Sarah Harrison, of the Asheville Paranormal Society says, “Well, I have watched the video and I can’t debunk it.  The fact that it set off the motion detectors means something physical was there. 
• The shape morphed into something that was human shaped.
• I have seen many video surveillance footage of alleged ghosts and this is the only one that I can’t debunk.  Many video’s of “ghosts” are hoaxes, but I think this would be impossible to hoax.”
• Teacher Martha Geitner has her own theory!  “It’s a ghost.  Of course it’s a ghost.  It’s the ghost of some former student who is really angry with his teacher and has come back to get back with the teacher, and he’s just making himself known at this time.”
• A school custodian told New Channel 7’s Connie LeGrand it’s not the first time he’s seen an image like this; but he says that’s what you can expect from a building built in 1929.

• Does Bigfoot really exist? If so, what is it?
• There are those who approach the Bigfoot question from a scientific point of view. Cryptozoology is the scientific study of and search for cryptids, animals which are beyond current zoological catalogues.
• Cryptids are often thought of as fantasy creatures and are ignored by mainstream scientists.
• There are literally thousands of such cryptid tales throughout the world.
• Some cryptids have been proven to exist. One example is the Coelacanth, a prehistoric fish thought to be extinct.
• Numerous anecdotes of the Coelacanth were obtained from South African locals, but its continued existence was never verified until 1938, when a specimen was found in a fisherman´s nets.
• The Okapi is a former cryptid found in central Africa. It appears as a combination of a giraffe´s head, a donkey´s body, and a zebra´s legs.
• The Sasquatch is probably the best known and most highly sought after of the cryptids.
• They walk upright, standing between 7 and 10 feet tall, are covered by brown and reddish fur, with a heavy brow, pronounced nose and wide mouth, are reported to have terrible body odor, and inhabit secluded forested areas.
• Despite their reputation for living in the Northwest, sightings of the Sasquatch extend into Oklahoma, Texas, the Carolinas, even Georgia and Florida.
• They are also known as the Yeti by the Nepalese of the Asian Himalayas, Yeren by the Chinese, and Yowie by the Australians.
• You have to ask yourself how the same creature can be so widely known by so many relatively isolated cultures throughout the span of history and not exist.

• Both Sasquatch and Extraterrestrials are unlike anything we have ever known. Most descriptions of Extraterrestrials differ from anything residing on Earth, anything from 3 to 5 foot Grays with large heads and slim bodies to Reptilians that walk upright on two legs.
• The Sasquatch has many commonalities with Extraterrestrials.
• Video of a Bigfoot-like creature was captured in Bluff Creek, California on October 20, 1967 by Roger Patterson. This video showed a creature standing more than 7 feet tall covered in dark brown fur, displaying female breasts and signs of previous injuries and damage at different points of its body, including what seems to be a torn right thigh muscle.
• Both display clear signs of intelligence.
• When an extraterrestrial entity is observed, it is most often involved in such scientific endeavors as collection of soil, plant, or other samples or performing medical experiments on unwilling abductees.

• Among physical trace evidence found in the study of the Sasquatch are dwellings or nests constructed in the forest from surrounding branches and flora in a fashion resembling tents.
• The Sasquatch has even displayed several methods of communication, from grunts and loud guttural yells to hitting two large branches together, and has been known to respond to attempts to replicate these sounds in the field.
• Upon sighting, Extraterrestrials tend to leave the area in an expeditious manner, usually by way of a craft that displays performance qualities not equaled by Human technology.
• Both are incredibly elusive.
• The Sasquatch tends to remain concealed when near Humans, and has sometimes been known to harass hikers, campers, and Bigfoot researchers in various ways, like throwing rocks at them. No physical remains of the elusive Sasquatch have ever been recovered and no living Sasquatch has allowed itself to be captured.
• The National Institute for Discovery Sciences, based in Las Vegas, Nevada, conducts ongoing research at several locations in the United States, one in Utah that is referred to as the Skinwalker Ranch.

  • Tom Horn of "Raiders News Network" also has a link to the Las Vegas, Nevada area through his Father; who worked for some guys with Mafia ties there. Tom's background and childhood included UFO and ET phenomena his sister experienced when both were young.
• Dr. Colm Kelleher, PhD, a biochemist and molecular biologist, was one of the lead researchers at this location.
• In his book Hunt for the Skinwalker: Science Confronts the Unexplained at a Remote Ranch in Utah, he reports that numerous anomalies have been recorded at the ranch.
• These included visits to the area by numerous types of UFO-like and Extraterrestrial phenomena, such as lights in the sky that alternately flew through the sky and hovered, giving the impression of intelligent control and operating much like an aerial surveillance and observation platform, as well as actual sightings of saucer-like craft and entities.
• Sightings of a creature closely resembling the Sasquatch was also observed and monitored at the ranch.
• Both Extraterrestrials and the Sasquatch were observed appearing through portals in the air.

  • Which goes far to prove my theory that sasquatch is a supernatural entity; just as the UFO and entities are.

  • The sasquatch was observed "appearing through a portal in the air" along with UFO craft; and were recorded by Dr Colm Kelleher, PhD, a biochemist and molecular biologist.
• Witnesses have reported that they have sometimes had glimpses through the portals of landscapes different than that in which the witness stood, appearing almost alien in origin. These anomalies have been recorded extensively by research scientists.

  • "Landscapes" observed through these "portals" by witnesses relate these landscapes appear different from the land and surroundings the human witness is standing on; "appearing almost alien in origin.."
• With both anomalies, Extraterrestrials and the Sasquatch appearing at the same location in much the same manner, a direct connection between the two is naturally and allowably assumed.
• Is Sasquatch also an alien entity, an Extraterrestrial?

  • It is, like the UFO and aliens, a "supernatural" being/creature..not of a material plain as we understand material.
• Is it considered wildlife from another planet or dimension?

  • You're getting closer
• Is it a "pet" of Extraterrestrials, being "let out to exercise", much the same way Humans allow their pet dogs and cats out at night? Naturally, we have no answers at this time, only speculation based on circumstantial evidence. Making this connection, though, makes for some interesting thought!

• A tribe of subterranean creatures who surface on Cannock Chase to hunt for food could be behind a rash of 'werewolf' and Big Foot sightings near Stafford.
• And the mysterious beings could also be responsible for a string of pet disappearances, it has been claimed.
• West Midlands Ghost Club, our area's top paranormal investigation group, say they have been contacted by a number of shocked eye-witnesses who claim they have come to face to face with a 'hairy, wolf-type creature' at the beauty spot.
• A scout leader and a local post man are amongst the 'credible' witnesses to contact the club.
• Theories behind the sightings range from a crazed tramp to aliens.
• But now another paranormal expert has put foward the theory the sub-human beast is not a werewolf at all - but a Stone Age throwback.
• The investigator, who wishes to remain anonymous, told us: "Strange sightings in this area have been made over many years by civilians, military, police, ex-police and scout leaders on patrol.
• "Some incidents have been reported and logged but others not - some people don't want to be classed as 'mad'.
• "The strangest rumour has come from a senior local resident who believes the mysterious intruders to be subterranean," he told us.
• "The creatures have made their way to the surface via old earthworks to hunt, for example, local deer."
• And, on the surface, the far-fetched tale could be easily dismissed. However, our expert added: "It's a fact that there has been significant mining activity under Cannock Chase for centuries. And it's a fact there is a high rate of domestic pet disappearance in the area - especially dogs off the lead...just ask anyone who walks their dog near the German War Cemetery..."
• Nick Duffy, a lead member of West Midlands Ghost Club, told us he was intrugued by this new theory: "It's as likely as any of the others - so it could well be," he said.

• On a cold December day in 1879, a man was hanged in Fort Saskatchewan, putting an end to one of the most horrifying killing sprees in Alberta history.
• Swift Runner was executed for murdering and then eating eight members of his own family over the previous winter.
• He believed he was possessed by Windigo, a terrifying mythological creature with a ravenous appetite for human flesh.
• It wasn't an isolated case. During the late 1800s and into the 20th Century, fear of Windigo haunted northern Alberta communities, resulting in several grisly deaths.

• Sun Media's Andrew Hanon speaks with Nathan Carlson, one of the world's leading authorities on Windigo, about Carlson's personal connection to the blood-curdling creature.

• Some call him a serial killer. 

  Others call him a desperate madman. 
• But right up until the trap door swung open and the rope snapped taut around his neck, one of Alberta's most prolific murderers insisted it was an evil spirit that compelled him to butcher and eat his entire family.
• Over the course of a single winter, he devoured his wife, six children, mother and brother.
• MOST HORRIFYING
• The man, a Cree trapper named Swift Runner, was hanged in 1879 in Fort Saskatchewan, the first legal execution in Alberta.
• The macabre case is considered by many to be the most horrifying crime in the province's history.
• But what most people don't realize is that it was part of a much larger phenomenon that Edmonton ethno-historian Nathan Carlson calls Windigo condition, which haunted communities right across northern Alberta in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and cost dozens of lives.
• The Windigo (an Anglicized form of the word Witiko) is a mythological creature among native cultures from the Rockies to northern Quebec.
• It has an insatiable appetite for human flesh and wreaks destruction wherever it goes.
• It's sometimes described as "an owl-eyed monster with large claws, matted hair, a naked emaciated body and a heart made of solid ice."
• Carlson describes it as "the consummate predator of humanity."
• "It's extremely destructive," he says. "The more it eats, the hungrier it gets, so it just keeps killing."
• Windigos can possess people, transforming them into wild-eyed, violent, flesh-eating maniacs with superhuman strength.
• Many native people in northern Alberta lived in terror of being possessed.
• "It's important to understand that cannibalism was repellent to the people," Carlson explains. "The Windigo personified evil."
• The Swift Runner case caused an international sensation, making headlines in newspapers across Canada and the U.S.
• According to accounts, he wandered alone into the Catholic Mission in St. Albert in the spring of 1879, claiming to be the only member of his family who didn't starve to death over a particularly cold, bitter winter.
• The priests became suspicious when they realized that Swift Runner, who weighed around 200 pounds, didn't seem malnourished at all and was plagued with screaming fits and nightmares as he slept.
• He told them he was being tormented by an evil spirit, called Windigo, but said little else about it.
• They reported their misgivings to police, who took Swift Runner to his family campground in the woods northeast of Edmonton, where they made a horrific discovery - the site was littered with bones, bits of flesh and hair.
• Some accounts claim that the larger bones had even been snapped and the marrow sucked out.

  • As has been discovered among the fossil remains of Neanderthal.
• He eventually confessed that he shot some of his family, bludgeoned others with an axe and even strangled one girl with a cord.
• In some accounts, Swift Runner said he fed one boy human flesh before he too was killed.
• 'THE LEAST OF MEN'
• Before he was hanged, Swift Runner expressed extreme remorse. He told Father Hippolyte Leduc, "I am the least of men and do not merit even being called a man."
• Interestingly, Swift Runner is the only documented case Carlson can find of someone killing others because he thought he was possessed by a Windigo.
• All other deaths he can document were cases of "Windigo executions," where others have killed the person believed to be possessed. They were acts of self-preservation, attempts to protect their community.
• In most of the cases, the victims themselves begged to be killed before they harmed their families.
• In many cases, witnesses reported physical changes -bodies swelling and growing, lips and mouths enlarging.
• Some of the victims spoke of icy cold in their chests and an inability to warm up.
• Carlson, who's Metis, first heard about the Windigo from his grandmother, who told him about an incident at Trout Lake, where members of the community killed a man possessed by a demon that had been cursed and turned into a Windigo.
• The story haunted him throughout his childhood, and after his grandmother died in 2002, he discovered an eerily similar story in an archived newspaper.
• "I was somewhat confounded by the discovery of the newspaper account that seemed to confirm a story that had been in my family for almost 100 years," he says.
• Further research revealed that the man who was killed was also a distant relative of Carlson's.
• Carlson is now writing a book on the Windigo condition in northern Alberta and is negotiating with filmmakers about a documentary.

• "Ever since it happened, I haven't been able to get it out of my head," Carlson says haltingly.
• "I just don't know what to think of it, quite frankly."
• The Edmonton ethno-historian is one of the world's leading experts on Windigo phenomenon, and the recent horrific beheading and alleged cannibalism on a Greyhound bus bound for Winnipeg from Edmonton rocked him to his very core.

• As the grisly details of Tim McLean's last moments on Earth came to light in the following days, Carlson sank deeper and deeper into a fog of horror and revulsion.
• Vince Weiguang Li is accused of abruptly attacking McLean, who by all accounts he didn't even know -- while McLean slept on the bus.
• Up until a few days before the killing, Li held a part- time job delivering newspapers in Edmonton. He was well thought-of by his boss and considered a nice guy, if a bit quiet and shy.
• On July 20 -- just 10 days before the killing -- Li delivered copies of the Sun that contained an extensive interview with Carlson about his research into the Windigo,
• a terrifying creature in native mythology that has a ravenous appetite for human flesh.
• It could take possession of people and turn them into cannibalistic monsters.
• The two-page feature talked about how, in the late 1800s and into the 20th century, Windigo "encounters" haunted communities across northern Alberta and resulted in dozens of gruesome deaths.
• In one case, a Cree trapper named Swift Runner was hanged after admitting to killing and eating his wife, children, brother and mother in the woods northeast of Edmonton in the winter of 1878-79.
• Prior to being charged with murder, he had suffered screaming fits and nightmares, which he attributed to being possessed by a Windigo.
• In several other cases, people banded together and killed individuals they feared were possessed by a Windigo.
• Often, they would decapitate the corpse and bury the head separate from the body in order to keep it from rising from the dead.
• Carlson documented several cases in northern Alberta communities where people believing they were "turning Windigo" would go into convulsions, make terrifying animal sounds and beg their captors to kill them before they started eating people.
• In last month's bus case, Li allegedly butchered McLean's body, brandishing the victim's severed head at the men who trapped him on the bus until police could arrive.
• He was later accused of eating McLean's flesh.
• When he appeared in a Portage La Prairie courthouse on charges of second-degree murder, the only words Li reportedly uttered were pleas for someone to kill him.
• A lot of his reported behaviour eerily mirrors the Windigo cases recounted in the newspaper feature that Li helped deliver to Edmonton homes just days before McLean was killed, one of the most gruesome slayings in modern Canadian history.
• Several media reports called McLean's killing unprecedented - an unspeakable, random attack the likes of which has never been seen in Canada.

  • NOTE: The still bizaar and controversial slaying of an American tourist and the wounding of his wife by a Chinese man the day after the opening of the Beijing Olympics in August 2008. News reports first stated the killer was a local, unempoyed man who after killing the man and a Chinese tour guide and wounding the American's wife, then flung himself from a tower where the slayings took place. Then a few days afterward, a witness stepped forward to report the killer she saw was a Chinese man in a business suit, who fled the scene quickly. She insists the killer was not the man first reported by the news. Shortly after this contradictory witness' story came out, Chinese authorities are said to have yanked the story of the original accused; the one who committed suicide.
• But Carlson knows better.

• "There are just too many parallels," he says.  

  "I can't say there's definite connection, but there are just too many coincidences.  

  "It's beyond eerie."

• Crazy Bears and UFOs

• With all the feuding, fighting, and fussing that has always seemed to divide the Bigfoot Hunters among us, there appears to be at least one point of agreement:
• Every Native American tribe seems to have ancient accounts of some kind of interaction with these large humanlike creatures that stretches back for centuries, long before the Europeans invaded the shores of Turtle Island.
• There are numerous points of contention. First of all, does Bigfoot, Sasquatch, whatever, even exist.
• If there is some kind of agreement that the creature fits into some category of beingness, the arguments may grow more intense and include 1.) the possibility that the Bigfoot is not a physical being, but a multidimensional interloper, and 2.) that there is a direct tie between UFO's and these giant creatures.
• Numerous UFOlogists have argued the possibility that such great hairy bipeds could be experimental creatures from spacecraft left loose on Earth.
• Some years ago, James C. Wyatt of Memphis, Tennessee, sent me a copy of his grandfather's journal which contained fascinating and startling entries, written in straightforward fashion, which, if interpreted literally, may indicate that an association between Bigfoot-type creatures and UFOs has existed for quite some time.
• In a journal dated 1888, Wyatt's grandfather records that he was somewhere along the Humboldt Line in the "Big Woods Country" where his father and several cowhands had wintered with a local tribe after delivering some cattle to a fort further north.
• Grandfather Wyatt was fluent in many tribal languages, proficient in sign language, and partook of most of the tribal activities.
• One day he came upon a man from the tribe carrying a large platter of raw meat.
• At first the man seemed afraid to answer Wyatt's questions concerning his errand, but he finally bade the cattleman to follow him.
• In a shallow cave in a cliff face dwelt a beast with long, shiny black hair that covered its entire body, except for its palms and an area around its eyes.
• The manlike creature did not seem wild or vicious; it sat cross--legged, Indian-style, to wolf the raw meat. Wyatt described the creature as built like a big, well-developed man, except for its lack of neck and its long body hair. The creature's head seemed to rest directly on its shoulders.
• Wyatt visited the man-beast in the cave more than a dozen times.
• After much questioning, and receiving two pounds of tobacco, a compass, and an axe, one of the men from the tribe took Wyatt to a high pinnacle of rock one clear night to tell him of the creature's origin.
• "Crazy Bear," as the thing was called by the Indians, had been brought to the "Big Woods" from the stars.
• A "small moon" had flown down like a swooping eagle and had landed on a plateau a few miles away from the tribe's encampment. The beast in the cave and two other "crazy bears" had been flung out of the "moon" before the craft had once again soared off to the stars.
• Wyatt's guide and several of his fellow villagers had occasionally seen the "men" who put the crazy bears off the small moons. They did, nor look like the giant hairy ones, but appeared to be more like men such as themselves.
• The man told Wyatt that other "crazy bears" had been left in the vicinity over the years.
• The men from the small moon had much shorter hair than the tribes people, though, and they wore shiny clothing. They always waved to the Indians in a friendly manner before they closed the door in their small moon and flew back to the stars.
• The crazy bears had been led to the village by the Indians, and at no time had the hairy giants offered any resistance to their benefactors. The Indians believed that the crazy bears from the stars had been sent to bring them powerful medicine, and they would not permit the creatures to stray away lest they be captured by rival tribes.
• I cannot help wondering if the oft-reported monsters and robots seen near UFO landing sites are similar to the "crazy bears" that certain Amerindian tribes were well aware of back in the last century.
• Perhaps, as some researchers suggest, the Bigfoot-type creatures are deposited here by extraterrestrial UFOnauts to test our environment in the same manner that we might one day in the future deposit primates on a planet whose atmosphere we wanted to evaluate in terms of a potential landing.
• In a lengthy letter to me, James Wyatt speculated: "Who is to say the Crazy Bears weren't exiled to our planet for some crime or other infraction of the laws of another planet [or dimension, we might add]?

• Who, indeed? I do know that I have spent a good many years attempting to find out. It may be a bit unnerving to suggest that Bigfoot may be the property of some other-dimensional interlopers or potential extraterrestrial colonists.

• I recently read Colm Kelleher's and George Knapp's "Hunt for the Skinwalker" (a fascinating book) in which Dr. Kelleher suggests that bigfoot may be a creature that is of a paranormal nature.
• The book recounts a host of paranormal activity that plagued a family of ranchers who had purchased a 480-acre ranch in Utah's Uinta Basin.
• In addition to sasquatch-like creatures, gigantic wolves, and other mysterious animals, there were frequent UFO sightings, glowing orbs that seemed to be under intelligent control, poltergeist activity - the whole gamut of anomalous events and creatures.
• The fact these types of events happen simultaneously would indicate that sasquatch and other mystery animals may exist in a paranormal context.
• Knapp and Kelleher also go on to say that many of the Native American tribes believe that sasquatch is both a flesh and blood AND a spirit creature. I think we're much too quick to dismiss Amerindian 'legend'.

  Friday August 22 2008
• The Occupational Therapy Unit at St Vitus's, an adult psychiatric hospital, was a long room with a dirty, vinyl floor and high windows, the lower panes of which were obscured by opaque plastic sheets.
• I was there to see a 13-year-old boy named Clive   Plummer. (All names have been changed). He had been committed due   to the terrible, demonic hallucinations he experienced after the death of   his mother.
• I had been asked to meet him by his sister, Roberta, whom I had been to   college with.
• She was convinced there was more to his apparent breakdown   than met the eye -- I wasn't so sure, but wanted to help her.
• Clive was in terrible physical shape -- thin, hollow-eyed and scarred from   self-harming. He wore an expression devoid of feeling, and sat perfectly   still, gazing unblinking into space.

• I extended my hand. 

   

    "Clive, my name's Shane. I'm a friend of Roberta's, and she's asked me   to come out and have a chat. I'm very pleased to meet you." 

• "I don't know you," he said tonelessly.  

   

    "I'm a friend of Roberta's." 
• "They sent you, didn't they?" he hissed at me, fighting to get   the words out.

• "Hey, relax, Clive. I promise you, I'm here because Roberta asked me   to come." 

   

    "You can't fool me," the boy hissed. "I've been waiting for   you. You're from them... I can tell." 
• "Who are they, Clive?" I asked, trying to calm him. "Who do   you think is trying to hurt you?"
• And then he was on top of me, knocking me backwards off the chair onto the   linoleum, screaming, spitting and snapping at me with shattered teeth.
• For a boy of his size, Clive was powerfully strong, and it took every ounce   of my weight and the momentum of our fall for me to roll over, so that I was   on top of him. Medical staff rushed over, a shot was administered, and poor   Clive was taken away.
• It took me several weeks to build up a relationship with Clive Plummer.
• Despite three visits accompanied by Roberta, the boy continued to be   cautious. Gradually, through perseverance, trust grew and he felt able to   tell me about the visions that haunted him.
• "I'm here, in the hospital, and it's night time," he began,   haltingly.
• "I'm the only one on the ward, and when I go to the door, it's open. I   walk out into the corridor. I know I shouldn't, but I keep going.
• I can see   a light away in the distance, and I can hear something, like voices praying   or chanting.
• "The sound sort of pulls me forward. As I get closer, I can see that   there's someone -- something -- standing at the end of the passage."
• His voice was cracking, as if his very being did not wish for him to   continue this narrative.
• "You don't have to tell me this if you don't want to, Clive," I   said quietly.

• "I need to. I have to tell someone." He looked at me, and the   terror was etched into every line in his face -- I thought, as I watched   him, that 13-year-old boys shouldn't have lines on their faces, but Clive   did.  

   

    "You believe me, don't you, Shane?" 

   

    "I know something awful happened to you, Clive."  
• I paused, squeezing his shoulder in an attempt to anchor him here with me,   with the smell of grass and trees and frozen earth. "What's at the end   of the corridor, Clive?"

• "One of them." 

   

    "Who? Who are they?" 

   

    "Not who. What." 

• "I don't understand." 

   

    "See, Shane, they're not men. Standing at the end of the hallway is   their leader.  
• "He's tall, much taller than you. His body is like a man, but the head   is like a goat or a bull.
• "It has horns and eyes like a cat, and smoke and fire come from the   nose when he breathes. The monster wants me back. In my dreams, he tells me   he's coming."

• I was in the office several days later when the call came from Roberta   Plummer. 

   

    "Clive's had an episode." 

   

    I paused in pushing a piece of paper into a plastic folder, the phone   cradled between my chin and shoulder.  

• "What kind of episode?" 

   

    A pause, then: "He attacked a nurse and almost killed her. He ... he   tried to rip her throat out. Scratched her with his nails. Broke her arm.   They said he almost tore her cheek off with his teeth."

• I went in to the hospital to see him immediately, and found him strapped to   his bed in great distress. 

   

    "You led them to me," Clive said, glowering at me from the bed. "You   tricked me into being your friend, and then you brought them here." 
• This visitor turned out to be a close family friend of the Plummers', Fr   Eddie, but when I spoke to him, he exuded sympathy and compassion for Clive.
• I learned that Clive's violence had occurred after a visit from a priest.
• He told me he was certain the nightmares and hallucinations were linked to   Clive's fascination with the occult, yet a second visit to Clive's home   revealed not a single Tarot card or book on witchcraft -- it didn't add up.
• I was no closer to learning why my client had regressed so badly.
• I found out a week later.
• On a visit to the hospital late one evening, I got talking to a cleaner, who   told me her name was Mildred. She was a handsome woman in her late sixties,   and we struck up a conversation over a hurried cigarette.

• During the course of our chat she mentioned that she knew Fr Eddie.  

   

    I raised an eyebrow. "How do you know him?" 

• She lowered her eyes, scuffing the ground with her toe like a child might. "Do   you know what a Magdalen is?" she asked. 

   

    "You mean the women who were in the Magdalen laundries?" I asked. 

   

    "Yes. I am -- I mean I was -- a Magdalen." 
• Magdelan laundries -- veritable prisons for so-called fallen women -- were   operated by different orders of the Roman   Catholic Church, most famously the Sisters of Mercy and the Good   Shepherd Sisters.
• "Fr Edward used to visit us in the Laundry," Mildred said. "Some   of the priests who came to see us were decent, but some were devils. He was   one of the worst."
• Fr Eddie had a history.
• He had been investigated for alleged abuses in   several parishes, and was said to have an obsession with the more mystical   and arcane side of the Catholic Church.
• As a priest told me: "Clive   Plummer may not be interested in the occult, but Fr Eddie most certainly is."

• It was too much of a coincidence. I decided to speak to the boy's father.   When I met him, he broke down.  

   

    "When my wife became ill, Fr Eddie asked her to attend some prayer   evenings at the presbytery," he said.  

• "I didn't realise until she'd been to a couple that they were actually   more a kind of pagan gathering. I think it was after the third or fourth one   she asked me if she could take him.  

   

    "She told me that Fr Eddie had told her that, because Clive was her   son, he'd amplify her natural energies, accelerate her healing.

• Clive said   he'd be glad to go -- he was completely devoted to his mother -- and I   thought no more about it.
• "The boy was a bit reserved after some of the meetings, but he's a   teenager, I passed it off as adolescence.
• My wife admitted to me that there   was a sexual element to some of the ceremonies they performed, and that   perhaps this was stirring up some hormonal issues for Clive. I told her I   didn't want him witnessing anything inappropriate, but she laughed and told   me it was more imagery and suggestion than anything else.

• So I said no more   about it. I never thought for a moment she'd allow anything harmful to   happen to our son." 

   

    "But she did, didn't she?" I said. 

• "I didn't find out what they'd done to him until it was too late,"   Plummer said. "My wife was in hospital, by then, and knew she was going   to die. She wanted me to get Clive help.  

   

    "She realised what she had done was wrong, but she was desperate for a   cure. I can't be angry with her. Wouldn't it have been better for him to   have a mother? She thought that was what she was doing, you see. She was   trying to live." 
• "Mr Plummer," I said, unable to hide the disgust in my voice, "in   her effort to live, your wife almost killed her son. Your son."
• Fr Eddie flatly denied the allegations of abuse, almost challenging me to   bring any charges against him.

• "They've tried to put me away before, Mr Dunphy," he crowed. "It   didn't work then, and I don't think it'll work now. But feel free to try."

   

    I told him to be quite certain that I would make every effort to do just   that. 
• 'She thought it would make her get better, didn't she?" Clive said. "That   by doing those things, the cancer would go away." It had not been easy   to tell him, nor for him to understand what had happened.
• "I don't remember any of it," Clive said. The sedatives they were   pumping him full of had been reduced, but he was still a bit groggy.
• "All   I can see when I try to is the monsters. It's dark and they're all around   me, hurting me. Mum isn't there."
• "I think your mind created those nightmares, as strange as it might   seem, to protect you," Roberta said. "What happened was really,   really awful. I suppose being attacked by demons seemed better than ... than   what really did occur."

• Clive Plummer was taken off all medication shortly after his father finally   faced the truth, and was allowed to go home shortly after that.  

   

    Roberta took a career break, to help her brother cope with the reality he   had been forced to accept, and she and Clive are, to the best of my   knowledge, still in therapy. Clive's father died a year later.  
• The Roman Catholic Church has left a legacy that will continue to   reverberate through Irish society for many decades to come. It is a shameful   thing that they continue to duck and dive, and to harbour individuals they   know are a danger to children.

• The man I based Fr Eddie on was, eventually,   prosecuted, on a lesser charge. He served 10 months, and is at large again,   now.

• Children and teenagers continue to be put in adult psychiatric facilities.   The need for child and adolescent beds has been highlighted countless times,   to no effect.
