• 'We'll neutralize S-300 if sold to Iran'

• If Russia goes through with the sale of its most advanced anti-aircraft missile system to Iran, Israel will use an electronic warfare device now under development to neutralize it and as a result present Russia as vulnerable to air infiltrations, a top defense official has told The Jerusalem Post.
• The Russian system, called the S-300, is one of the most advanced multi-target anti-aircraft-missile systems in the world today and has a reported ability to track up to 100 targets simultaneously while engaging up to 12 at the same time.
• It has a range of about 200 kilometers and can hit targets at altitudes of 27,000 meters.
• While Russia has denied that it sold the system to Iran, Teheran claimed last year that Moscow was preparing to equip the Islamic Republic with S-300 systems.

• Mixed media reports have emerged recently regarding the possible delivery of the system to Iran.
• Two weeks ago Reuters quoted a senior Israeli official who said the system would be delivered to Iran by the end of the year.
• In response, the Pentagon released a statement rejecting the assessment and saying that the US did not believe Iran would get it in 2008.
• According to the Israeli defense official who spoke to the Post, "no one really knows yet if and when Iran will get the system."
• A top IAF officer also said this week that Israel needed to do "everything possible" to prevent the S-300 from reaching the region.
• "Russia will have to think real hard before delivering this system to Iran, which is possibly on the brink of conflict with either Israel or the US, since if the system is delivered, an EW [electronic warfare] system will likely be developed to neutralize it, and if that happens it would be catastrophic not only for Iran but also for Russia," the defense official said. 
• Neutralization of one of the main components of Russian air defense would be a blow to Russian national security as well as to defense exports.
• "No country will want to buy the system if it is proven to be ineffective," the official said. "For these reasons, Russia may not deliver it in the end to Iran."
• Also on Thursday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak told an Italian paper that a nuclear Iran would be "dangerous to world order."
• "Either way, we need to keep every option open. If they provoke us, or they attack us, our army is prepared to attack and to succeed uncompromisingly," he asserted in an interview with the daily Corriere della Sera . "It's up to us to find the best way to get the best result with minimum damage," Barak added.

• The fighting  which broke out over the weekend between Russia and Georgia has brought Israel's intensive involvement in the region into the limelight.
• This involvement includes the sale of advanced weapons to Georgia and the training of the Georgian army's infantry forces.
• The Defense Ministry held a special meeting Sunday to discuss the various arms deals held by Israelis in Georgia, but no change in policy has been announced as of yet.
• "The subject is closely monitored," said sources in the Defense Ministry. "We are not operating in any way which may counter Israeli interests.
• We have turned down many requests involving arms sales to Georgia; and the ones which have been approves have been duly scrutinized.
• So far, we have placed no limitations on the sale of protective measures."  
• Israel  began selling arms to Georgia about seven years ago following an initiative by Georgian citizens who immigrated to Israel and became businesspeople.
• "They contacted defense industry officials and arms dealers and told them that Georgia had relatively large budgets and could be interested in purchasing Israeli weapons," says a source involved in arms exports.
• The military cooperation between the countries developed swiftly.
• The fact that Georgia's defense minister, Davit Kezerashvili, is a former Israeli who is fluent in Hebrew contributed to this cooperation.

• "His door was always open to the Israelis who came and offered his country arms systems made in Israel," the source said.
• "Compared to countries in Eastern Europe, the deals in this country were conducted fast, mainly due to the defense minister's personal involvement."
• Among the Israelis who took advantage of the opportunity and began doing business in Georgia were former Minister Roni Milo and his brother Shlomo, former director-general of the Military Industries, Brigadier-General (Res.) Gal Hirsch and Major-General (Res.) Yisrael Ziv.
• Roni Milo conducted business in Georgia for Elbit Systems and the Military Industries, and with his help Israel's defense industries managed to sell to Georgia remote-piloted vehicles (RPVs), automatic turrets for armored vehicles, antiaircraft systems, communication systems, shells and rockets.
• According to Israeli sources, Gal Hirsch gave the Georgian army advice on the establishment of elite units such as Sayeret Matkal and on rearmament, and gave various courses in the fields of combat intelligence and fighting in built-up areas.
• 'Don't anger the Russians'
• The Israelis operating in Georgia attempted to convince the Israeli Aerospace Industries to sell various systems to the Georgian air force, but were turned down.
• The reason for the refusal was "special" relations created between the Aerospace Industries and Russia in terms of improving fighter jets produced in the former USSR and the fear that selling weapons to Georgia would anger the Russians and prompt them to cancel the deals.
• Israelis' activity in Georgia and the deals they struck there were all authorized by the Defense Ministry.
• Israel viewed Georgia as a friendly state to which there is no reason not to sell arms systems similar to those Israel exports to other countries in the world.
• As the tension between Russia and Georgia grew, however, increasing voices were heard in Israel – particularly in the Foreign Ministry – calling on the Defense Ministry to be more selective in the approval of the deals with Georgia for fear that they would anger Russia.
• "It was clear that too many unmistakable Israeli systems in the possesion of the Georgian army would be like a red cloth in the face of a raging bull as far as Russia is concerned," explained a source in the defense establishment.
• For inctance, the Russians viewed the operation of the Elbit System's RPVs as a real provocation.
• "It was clear that the Russians were angry," says a defense establishment source, "and that the interception of three of these RPVs in the past three months was an expression of this anger.
• Not everyone in Israel understood the sensitive nerve Israel touched when it supplied such an advanced arms system to a country whose relations with Russia are highly tense."
• In May it was eventually decide to approve future deals with Georgia only for the sale of non-offensive weapon systems, such as intelligence, communications and computer systems, and not to approve deals for the sale of rifles, aircraft, sells, etc.
• A senior source in the Military Industry said Saturday that despite some reporters, the activity of Georgia's military industry was extremely limited.
• "We conducted a small job for them several years ago," he said. "The rest of the deals remained on paper."
• Dov Pikulin, one of the owners of the Authentico company specializing in trips and journeys to the area, says however that "the Israeli is the main investor in the Georgian economy. Everyone is there, directly or indirectly."
• Georgian minister: Israel should be proud
• "The Israelis should be proud of themselves for the Israeli training and education received by the Georgian soldiers," Georgian Minister Temur Yakobashvili said Saturday.
• Yakobashvili is a Jew and is fluent in Hebrew.
• "We are now in a fight against the great Russia," he said, "and our hope is to receive assistance from the White House, because Georgia cannot survive on its own.
• "It's important that the entire world understands that what is happening in Georgia now will affect the entire world order.
• It's not just Georgia's business, but the entire world's business."
• One of the Georgian parliament members did not settle Saturday for the call for American aid, urging Israel to help stop the Russian offensive as well:
• "We need help from the UN and from our friends, headed by the United States and Israel.

• War in the Caucasus: Towards a Broader Russia-US Military Confrontation?

• During the night of August 7, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Georgia's president Saakashvili ordered an all-out military attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. 
• The aerial bombardments and ground attacks were largely directed against civilian targets including residential areas, hospitals and the university. The provincial capital Tskhinvali was destroyed.
• The attacks resulted in some 1500 civilian deaths, according to both Russian and Western sources.  "The air and artillery bombardment left the provincial capital without water, food, electricity and gas.
• According to reports, some 34,000 people from South Ossetia have fled to Russia. (Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake City, August 10, 2008) 
• The importance and timing of this military operation must be carefully analyzed. It has far-reaching implications. 
• Georgia is an outpost of US and NATO forces, on the immediate border of the Russian Federation and within proximity of the Middle East Central Asian war theater.

• South Ossetia is also at the crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes.

• Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underscored the destabilizing impacts of "foreign" military aid to Georgia: .

   

   

  “It all confirms our numerous warnings addressed to the international community that it is necessary to pay attention to massive arms purchasing by Georgia during several years. • Moscow's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, sent an official note to the representatives of all NATO member countries:  

   

   

  “Russia has already begun consultations with the ambassadors of the NATO countries and consultations with NATO military representatives will be held tomorrow," Rogozin said. "We will caution them against continuing to further support of Saakashvili." 

   

  “It is an undisguised aggression accompanied by a mass propaganda war,” he said.

• According to Rogozin, Georgia had initially planned to: 

   

   

  "start military action against Abkhazia, however, 'the Abkhaz fortified region turned out to be unassailable for Georgian armed formations, therefore a different tactic was chosen aimed against South Ossetia', which is more accessible territorially.
• The envoy has no doubts that Mikheil Saakashvili had agreed his actions with "sponsors", "those with whom he is negotiating Georgia's accession to NATO ". (RIA Novosti, August 8, 2008)
• Contrary to what was conveyed by Western media reports, the attacks were anticipated by Moscow.
• The attacks were timed to coincide with the opening of the Olympics, largely with a view to avoiding frontpage media coverage of the Georgian military operation.
• On August 7, Russian forces were in an advanced state readiness. The counterattack was swiftly carried out. 
• Tanks, armored vehicles and several thousand ground troops have been deployed. Russian air strikes have largely targeted military facilities inside Georgia including the Gori military base. 
• Russian paratroopers were sent in from Russia's Ivanovo, Moscow and Pskov airborne divisions.
• The Georgian military attack was repealed with a massive show of strength on the part of the Russian military. 
• Act of Provocation?
• US-NATO military and intelligence planners invariably examine various "scenarios" of a proposed military operation-- i.e. in this case, a limited Georgian attack largely directed against civilian targets, with a view to inflicting civilian casualties. 
• The examination of scenarios is a routine practice. With limited military capabilities, a Georgian victory and occupation of Tskhinvali, was an impossibility from the outset. And this was known and understood to US-NATO military planners.  
• A humanitarian disaster rather than a military victory was an integral part of the scenario. 
• The objective was to destroy the provincial capital, while also inflicting a significant loss of human life. 
• If the objective were to restore Georgian political control over the provincial government, the operation would have been undertaken in a very different fashion, with Special Forces occupying key public buildings, communications networks and provincial institutions, rather than waging an all out bombing raid on residential areas, hospitals, not to mention Tskhinvali's University. 
• The Russian response was entirely predictable. 
• Georgia was "encouraged" by NATO and the US. Both Washington and NATO headquarters in Brussels were acutely aware of what would happen in the case of a Russian counterattack. 
• The question is: was this a deliberate provocation intended to trigger a Russian military response and suck the Russians into a broader military confrontation with Georgia (and allied forces) which could potentially escalate into an all out war? 
• Georgia has the third largest contingent of coalition forces in Iraq after the US and the UK, with some 2000 troops. 
• According to reports, Georgian troops in Iraq are now being repatriated in US military planes, to fight Russian forces. (See Debka.com, August 10, 2008)
• This US decision to repatriate Georgian servicemen suggests that Washington is intent upon an escalation of the conflict, where Georgian troops are to be used as cannon fodder against a massive deployment of Russian forces. 
• US-NATO and Israel Involved in the Planning of the Attacks

• In mid-July, Georgian and U.S. troops held a joint military exercise entitled "Immediate Response" involving respectively 1,200 US and 800 Georgian troops. 

   

  The announcement by the Georgian Ministry of Defense on July 12 stated that they US and Georgian troops were to "train for three weeks at the Vaziani military base" near the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. (AP, July 15, 2008).
• These exercises, which were completed barely a week before the August 7 attacks, were an obvious dress rehearsal of a military operation, which, in all likelihood, had been planned in close cooperation with the Pentagon. 
• The war on Southern Ossetia was not meant to be won, leading to the restoration of Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia. It was intended to destabilize the region while also triggering a US-NATO confrontation with Russia.
• On July 12, coinciding with the outset of the Georgia-US war games, the Russian Defense Ministry started its own military maneuvers in the North Caucasus region.
• The usual disclaimer by both Tblisi and Moscow: the military exercises have “nothing to do” with the situation in South Ossetia. (Ibid)
• Let us be under no illusions. This is not a civil war.
• The attacks are an integral part of the broader Middle East Central Asian war, including US-NATO-Israeli war preparations in relation to Iran.

• The Role of Israeli Military Advisers
• While NATO and US military advisers did not partake in the military operation per se, they were actively involved in the planning and logistics of the attacks.
• According to Israeli sources (Debka.com, August 8, 2008), the ground assault on August 7-8, using tanks and artillery was "aided by Israeli military advisers".
• Israel also supplied Georgia with Hermes-450 and Skylark unmanned aerial vehicles, which were used in the weeks leading up to the August 7 attacks. 
• Georgia has also acquired, according to a report in Rezonansi (August 6, in Georgian, BBC translation) "some powerful weapons through the upgrade of Su-25 planes and artillery systems in Israel". According to Haaretz (August 10, 2008), Israelis are active in military manufacturing and security consulting in Georgia. 
• Russian forces are now directly fighting a NATO-US trained Georgian army integrated by US and Israeli advisers.
• And Russian warplanes have attacked the military jet factory on the outskirts of Tbilisi, which produces the upgraded Su-25 fighter jet, with technical support from Israel. (CTV.ca, August 10, 2008) 
• When viewed in the broader context of the Middle East war, the crisis in Southern Ossetia could lead to escalation, including a direct confrontation between Russian and NATO forces.
• If this were to occur, we would be facing the most serious crisis in US-Russian relations since the Cuban Missile crisis in October 1962.
• Georgia: NATO-US Outpost 
• Georgia is part of a NATO military alliance (GUAM) signed in April 1999 at the very outset of the war on Yugoslavia.
• It also has a bilateral military cooperation agreement with the US.
• These underlying military agreements have served to protect Anglo-American oil interests in the Caspian sea basin as well as pipeline routes. 
• Both the US and NATO have a military presence in Georgia and are working closely with the Georgian Armed Forces.
• Since the signing of the 1999 GUAM agreement, Georgia has been the recipient of extensive US military aid. 
• Barely a few months ago, in early May, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused Washington, "claiming that [US as well as NATO and Israeli] military assistance to Georgia is destabilizing the region." (Russia Claims Georgia in Arms Buildup, Wired News, May 19, 2008).

• According to the Russian Defense Ministry

   

   

  "Georgia has received 206 tanks, of which 175 units were supplied by NATO states, 186 armored vehicles (126 - from NATO) , 79 guns (67 - from NATO) , 25 helicopters (12 - from NATO) , 70 mortars, ten surface-to-air missile systems, eight Israeli-made unmanned aircraft, and other weapons. In addition, NATO countries have supplied four combat aircraft to Georgia. The Russian Defense Ministry said there were plans to deliver to Georgia 145 armored vehicles, 262 guns and mortars, 14 combat aircraft including four Mirazh-2000 destroyers, 25 combat helicopters, 15 American Black Hawk aircraft, six surface-to-air missile systems and other arms." (Interfax News Agency, Moscow, in Russian, Aug 7, 2008)
• NATO-US-Israeli assistance under formal military cooperation agreements involves a steady flow of advanced military equipment as well as training and consulting services. 
• According to US military sources (spokesman for US European Command), the US has more than 100 "military trainers" in Georgia.
• A Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman "said there were no plans to redeploy the estimated 130 US troops and civilian contractors, who he said were stationed in the area around Tblisi" (AFP, 9 August 2008).
• In fact, US-NATO military presence in Georgia is on a larger scale to that acknowledged in official statements. The number of NATO personnel in Georgia acting as trainers and military advisers has not been confirmed.
•  In 2005, Georgian president proudly announced the inauguration of the first military base, which "fully meets NATO standards".
• Although not officially a member of NATO, Georgia's military is full integrated into NATO procedures. 
• Immediately following the inauguration of the Senakskaya base in west Georgia, Tblisi announced the opening of a second military base at Gori which would  also "comply with NATO regulations in terms of military requirements as well as social conditions." (Ria Novosti, 26 May 2006).
• The Gori base has been used to train Georgian troops dispatched to fight under US command in the Iraq war theater. 
• It is worth noting that under a March 31, 2006, agreement between Tblisi and Moscow, Russia's two Soviet-era military bases in Georgia - Akhalkalaki and Batumi have been closed down. (Ibid)  The pullout at Batumi commenced in May of last year, 2007. The last remaining Russian troops left the Batumi military facility in early July 2008, barely a week before the commencement of the US-Georgia war games and barely a month prior to the attacks on South Ossetia.  
• The Israel Connection
• Israel is now part of the Anglo-American military axis, which serves the interests of the Western oil giants in the Middle East and Central Asia.
• More than 20 percent of Israeli oil is imported from Azerbaijan, of which a large share transits through the BTC pipeline.
• Israel is a partner in the Baku-Tblisi- Ceyhan pipeline which brings oil and gas to the Eastern Mediterranean.
• Controlled by British Petroleum, the BTC pipeline has dramatically changed the geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Caucusus: 

• "[The BTC pipeline] considerably changes the status of the region's countries and cements a new pro-West alliance. Having taken the pipeline to the Mediterranean, Washington has practically set up a new bloc with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Israel, " (Komerzant, Moscow, 14 July 2006)

   

  
• While the official reports state that the BTC pipeline will "channel oil to Western markets", what is rarely acknowledged is that part of the oil from the Caspian sea would be directly channeled towards Israel, via Georgia. In this regard, a Israeli-Turkish pipeline project has also been envisaged which would link Ceyhan to the Israeli port of Ashkelon and from there through Israel's main pipeline system, to the Red Sea.
• The objective of Israel is not only to acquire Caspian sea oil for its own consumption needs but also to play a key role in re-exporting Caspian sea oil back to the Asian markets through the Red Sea port of Eilat.
• The strategic implications of this re-routing of Caspian sea oil are far-reaching. (For further details see Michel Chossudovsky, The War on Lebanon and the Battle for Oil, Global Research, July 2006)
• What is envisaged is to link the BTC pipeline to the Trans-Israel Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline, also known as Israel's Tipline, from Ceyhan to the Israeli port of Ashkelon. 
• "Turkey and Israel are negotiating the construction of a multi-million-dollar energy and water project that will transport water, electricity, natural gas and oil by pipelines to Israel, with the oil to be sent onward from Israel to the Far East, 

• The new Turkish-Israeli proposal under discussion would see the transfer of water, electricity, natural gas and oil to Israel via four underwater pipelines.

• “Baku oil can be transported to Ashkelon via this new pipeline and to India and the Far East.[via the Red sea]" 

   

  "Ceyhan and the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon are situated only 400 km apart. Oil can be transported to the city in tankers or via specially constructed under-water pipeline. From Ashkelon the oil can be pumped through already existing pipeline to the port of Eilat at the Red Sea; and from there it can be transported to India and other Asian countries in tankers. (REGNUM) 
• In this regard, Israel is slated to play a major strategic role in "protecting" the Eastern Mediterranean transport and pipeline corridors out of Ceyhan.

  • One of the triggers for the Gog-Magog invasion of Israel?
• Concurrently, it also involved in channeling military aid and training to both Georgia and Azerbaijan. 
• A far-reaching 1999 bilateral military cooperation agreement between Tblisi and Tel Aviv was reached barely a month before the NATO sponsored GUUAM agreement. It was signed in Tbilisi by President Shevardnadze and Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyu.
• These various military cooperation arrangements are ultimately intended to undermine Russia's presence and influence in the Caucasus and Central Asia. 
• In a pro forma declaration, Tel Aviv committed itself, following bilateral discussions with Moscow, on August 5, 2008, to cut back military assistance to Georgia. 
• Russia's Response
• Tanks and armored vehicles were sent in. The Russian air force was also involved in aerial counter-attacks on Georgian military positions including the military base of Gori. 
• In response to the attacks, Russian forces intervened with conventional ground troops.
• The Western media has portrayed the Russian as solely responsible for the deaths of civilians, yet at the same time the Western media has acknowledged (confirmed by the BBC) that most of the civilian casualties at the outset were the result of the Georgian ground and air attacks. 
• Based on Russian and Western sources, the initial death toll in South Ossetia was at least 1,400 (BBC) mostly civilians.
• "Georgian casualty figures ranged from 82 dead, including 37 civilians, to a figure of around 130 dead....
• A Russian air strike on Gori, a Georgian town near South Ossetia, left 60 people dead, many of them civilians, Georgia says." (BBC, August 9, 2008). Russian sources place the number of civilian deaths on South Ossetia at 2000. 
• A process of escalation and confrontation between Russia and America is unfolding, reminiscent of the Cold War era. 
• Supported by media propaganda, the Western military alliance is intent on using this incident to confront Russia, as evidenced by recent NATO statements.
• Are we dealing with an act of provocation, with a view to triggering a broader conflict?

• Youths contribute to advancement of Third Temple

• Mourning over the destruction of Jerusalem is normal in the month of Av, but at the Temple Mount and Land of Israel  Faith Movement all focus is on the “big day”  - the day in which the Third Temple will be built.
• As part of the preparations, hundreds of teenagers are expected to sign the “Temple Treaty” and to proclaim, “We commit to doing everything in our power to abide by this commandment and to devote at least half an hour a week toward this effort.”
• In the youth conference conducted by the Temple Institute in the Old City of Jerusalem, scheduled for Thursday, participants will discuss possible plans of action to further the building of the Temple.
• Under the title, “Building the Temple, it’s in Our Hands,” lessons will be given by rabbis identified with the Temple and for the first time ever, a treaty pertaining to the necessity of building the Temple will be revealed.
• “God commanded us in his Torah, ‘build me a Temple and I shall dwell amongst you',” as written in the document, “All of Israel must do everything they can to obey this commandment...”
• In a conversation with Ynet, Temple Institute Director Rabbi Yehuda Glick vowed that this is the first event in a series that will institutionalize and widen youth activities.
• “(Deceased general) Mota Gur said (during the conquest of east Jerusalem in the Six-Day War), ‘The Temple Mount is in our hands’, and I say now the Temple is in our hands,” said Glick.
• “The treaty we composed contains a bunch of suggestions like Temple studies, embroidering priestly clothes, illustration for books on the subject, enhancing awareness, fundraising, or any other activity we believe can further the building of the Temple.
• “No clause calls for the launching of LAW missiles or the exploding of the mosque at the Temple Mount,” Glick stressed. 
• Women are also expected to participate in Thursday’s event, during which they will watch a performance intended to encourage them to be active in the advancement of the Temple.
• “This Temple is not just something historic stored in a memory chest,” said Glick, “everyone has the opportunity to contribute to this goal.”

• Tisha B'Av survey reveals biggest fear amongst members of all Jewish denominations is division of city into capital of two nations

• Jews in Israel  on Sunday lamented the destruction of the First and Second Temples at the Western Wall plaza and synagogues across the country.
• The Third Temple has not been built yet and there are people who are already concerned with the next destruction.
• A survey conducted for Ynet’s Jewish section and the Gesher Organization for Tisha B'Av  listed a wide-range of the most dangerous potential situations in which an additional destruction can occur in Jerusalem.
• In the first place: Dividing the city and turning it into a joint capital for the Israeli and Palestinian nations.
• Twenty percent of the participants said that nothing will endanger the strong and flourishing city of Jerusalem.
• This conjoined Ynet-Gesher survey conducted by the Mutagim Institute included 500 interviewees representing all parts of the Jewish, adult, Hebrew-speaking population in Israel.
• Participants of the survey were asked the following question: “On Tisha B'Av, we mourn the destruction of the city of Jerusalem. What in your opinion is the greatest danger for another destruction of the city?"
• Forty-two percent chose the division of Jerusalem into a capital of two nations as the most dangerous situation.
• Seventeen percent believe that designating the city solely for religious and ultra-Orthodox populations is more worrisome and four percent believe that the dirt in the streets is more threatening than anything and serves as the greatest danger for additional destruction.
• However, 20% of those asked believe that “Jerusalem is a strong and prosperous city and nothing can endanger it.”
• The rest of those asked refused to reply. Members of the various Jewish denominations agreed that the split of Jerusalem is the most threatening situation for the retention of its existence.
• Seventy-two percent of the haredi population, 63% of the religious, 39% of those who consider themselves traditional and 31% of secular Jews agreed on this issue.
• Amongst the secular participants, however, the issue of splitting Jerusalem received first place in a narrow victory since 29% believe that the transformation of Jerusalem into a completely haredi and religious city is more dangerous.
• Amongst the ultra-Orthodox, not one participant replied to this issue and those traditionally Jewish are the most optimistic.
• Twenty-seven percent of the latter believe that nothing can threaten the strong and fruitful city.
• Gesher Director Shoshi Becker referred to the data, saying that “precisely because the threat regarding Jerusalem’s division is so central, we need to contend internally with the phenomenon of Jerusalem turning into a ‘city with a dome.’
• “Jerusalem, which was destroyed due to unfounded hatred, Jerusalem who makes ‘all of Israel, friends,’ needs to find a way to allow each and every Jew to feel connected to the capital in accordance with their beliefs and to feel at home there,” said Becker.

• If you ever wondered why American policy toward, against, with and groveling by the Israeli state, the answer is the leader of a group of Jews who wrote Barack Obama's AIPAC Speech, (American Israel Public Affairs Committee)
• led by the Marxist pictured on the left, Daniel Kurtzer, the Judas Goat of Barack Hussein Obama to not only the American, but the Judean people.
• The authors of the AIPAC speech which strangely had Barack Obama sounding more George Bush than George Bush was not in the least of what Daniel Kurtzer believes,
• but was of his Brzezinski Clique to fool Judeans and Americans who support Israel into believing Barack Obama is "one of them".
• This is exactly what the Judas Goat is for. It is a goat which would lead a group of sheep to the slaughter pit by fooling the sheep into thinking it was one of them leading them to safety.
• Judas of course is the name of the infamous, kiss of death, who betrayed his Master, Jesus the Christ to the slaughter.
• This assembled group was a strange mix of leftists who wrote the AIPAC speech in Daniel Kurtzer, Dennis Ross and James Steinberg.
• Dennis Ross was brought into the Obama camp as the cover to give Mr. Obama the tone he was pro Judean by Kurtzer.
• Mr. Ross is most interesting in being a Democrat in the Sam Nunn line of thinking on affairs.
• He started his life in the Reagan years when Richard Allen of NSA picked Paul Wolfowitz for the State Department's Director of Policy Planning.
• Wolfowitz would then pick an infamous team of James Roche, Zalmay Khalilizad, Alan Keyes and Scooter Libby.
• Ross would be known in subsequent years Clinton years in leading the Israeli Arab negotiations as "Israel's lawyer" in being biased on meetings never questioning any leftist Jewish government demands.
• Right wing Jews would term him self hating during this period, and yet, Ross is currently in the Israeli state with AIPAC, including Benjamin Netanyahu and Mort Zuckerman formulating Jewish peace ideas.
• That is not the Barack Obama nor Daniel Kurtzer crowd. It is for that reason it is deemed Mr. Ross was used to con the American Jewish vote in attempting to get them to vote for Barack Obama as he "speaks their same language".
• James Steinberg is the non celebre Steinberg or the not famous Steinberg in this mix in being liberal Brookings Institute window dressing, Dean of Lyndon Johnson School of Public Affairs and serving under Bill Clinton as deputy National Security Adviser.
• He was a senior analyst at RAND which is a quasi government modifying society group which gives cover to people like Zbigniew Brzezinski to visit Syria as a "citizen" while making covert policy telling the world Syria can be turned into an ally earlier this year,
• and yet now with Russia demolishing Georgia, Dictator Assad of Syria was praising Russian actions and is about to host the only aircraft carrier the Russians have in a Syrian port.
• James Steinberg unless this jack pops out of the box in some other form is but liberal window dressing marching along being used by the real players giving them cover to con voters into casting an Obama ballot.
• It was Mr. Kurtzer in his leftist Jewish faction who spread the racist term "neocon" about Jews who used to be leftists, but in the Reagan years became pro American and agreed with the policy of strong national defense.
• The real nasty in this is self proclaimed "Orthodox Jew" Daniel Kurtzer.
• Kurtzer is the group which has made everyone think the Israeli policy is insane, because it veers from being pro Israeli in a Dennis Ross and then slams back to Jimmy Carter anti semite.
• It was this faction which has been coming up with policies which decided under James Baker in the Bush 41 years to bring in a defeated and outcast pedophile terrorist in Yassir Arafat to the neo Syrian Philistine (Palestinian) negotiations.
• Kurtzer would be the author of the line smashing Begin policy and dooming the American Jewish immigrants to the Israeli state to the brutality and eating Philistine rockets as Russian secular Jews evicted Jews from their homes in Gush Katif and other areas.
• That line would be "land for peace". The net result being American religious Jewish settlers are now in ghettos having rockets fired at them with the purpose of breaking them so they flee the Israeli state and leave it for the Rothschild Marxists.
• Kurtzer is behind the cleansing of Judea of American and religious Jews.

• Kurtzer and Ross have made a great deal of noise blaming President Bush and Sec. of State Rice for failings which were Rothschild in origin in the United States and the Arabs were expecting one scenario and Kurtzer and his clique were implementing a Pax Europious.
• Both Kurtzer and Ross would be screaming about Bush / Rice not being public in the "peace" being offered the Philistines and the Jews. The reason Bush / Rice started making their own "deal" was they knew the entire game was changed on them in betrayal.
• Colin Powell was suckered into this being a Rockefeller agent and almost got himself assassinated for it on a trip to the Middle East.

• It wasn't until almost a year ago that Sec. Rice actually got American control over the situation enough to work a deal with pro American Jews and Arabs where Syria was bombed, terrorists were being assassinated and Ehud Olmert the worst problem for Jews, Americans and Philistines is being leveraged out.

• Russia threatens sale of offensive weapons to Israel's enemies
• Russian security officials threatened retaliation against Israel for its weapons exports to Georgia including eight different aerial drones.
• Russian Deputy Chief of Staff Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn said Israel supplied at least eight different models of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Georgia. Nogovitsyn said Israel has also sold a range of weapons and sought to export main battle tanks to Georgia.
• Russian diplomatic sources said the government of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was furious over Israel's refusal to impose a military embargo on Georgia.
• The sources said Putin's aides had urged Israel several times to halt weapons exports.
• "We asked Israel not to sell offensive weapons to a hostile neighboring state, but they said they're a sovereign state," a diplomatic source said.
• "Well, Israel shouldn't be surprised if we sell offensive weapons to Israel's neighbors."
• Already, Russia, in wake of its military victory over Georgia, has scheduled a summit with Syria to discuss offensive weapons sales, the sources said. Syrian President Bashar Assad was scheduled to meet Putin in Moscow on Aug. 20.
• Tbilisi has asserted that Israel continued to ship weapons and platforms to Georgia throughout the Russian war.
• But Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili reported delays in the supply of Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles to his country.
• So far, the diplomatic sources said, Putin has been careful to limit Russian military sales to Iran and Syria to defensive systems.
• In 2007, they said, Putin, who remains in charge of defense export policy, vetoed efforts by the Defense Ministry and the state-owned arms agency Rosoboronexport to sell the Iskander-E long-range rocket to Syria.
• "Putin will now offer Iskander to Syria," another Russian source said. "Whether this will be a serious offer or something just to scare the Israelis we'll know in another few months."
• In December 2007, Israel agreed not to sign new contracts for offensive weapons to Georgia. But the Israeli Defense Ministry, supported by the United States, maintained it would honor existing arms deals with Tbilisi.

• The international community's role would be that of advisors, but would give it large media exposure in attempts to divide the city and make it a shared capital of both Israel and a new Arab country.
• Leaders of the European Union (EU) and other Western countries have suggested that Jews not have exclusive sovereignty over its holy sites in the city.
• Yasser Arafat, Abbas's predecessor, rejected a similar offer by then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak in 2000. His rejection of the proposal stemming from the Oslo Agreements helped spark the Oslo War, also referred to as the "second intifiada,"
• Prime Minister Olmert as recently as two years ago stated that Jerusalem is Israel's "undivided and eternal" capital, and the Shas party has said several times it will leave the coalition and topple the government if the status of Jerusalem is negotiated.

• After  a pathetically short period of Zionist arm wrestling in Berlin, Germany  caved-in and agreed to build and provide the first two Dolphin class  submarines free of charge, and extend a loan to Israel for the third.
• Naturally this loan was never repaid, meaning that German taxpayers had  unwittingly funded Israel’s entire submarine fleet, custom-designed to  launch nuclear-tipped missiles from specially designed torpedo tubes.
• Obtaining the deadly American Harpoon missiles was relatively easy.
• For  decades American taxpayers have unwittingly provided the Jewish State  with enough free “expendable” munitions to crush the Palestinian  people in their own country, and the Harpoon missile is classed as an  expendable munition. What this means is that Harpoon falls into the same  generic category as rifle bullets and hand grenades, so Washington went  ahead and gifted the Jewish State with more than fifty nuclear-capable  Harpoons.
• The  nuclear warheads for these missiles can be either American or homegrown  Dimona products, but no matter which, Israel had to make it known that  the nuclear capability was real, for there is no point making a nuclear  threat if you cannot back it up with real nuclear muscle.
• This was  achieved by leaking the information through high profile Israeli media  assets, who initially plastered the information all over the Internet.  This completed stage one of the exercise, which then had to be swiftly  followed by a quasi-official statement of absolute deniability.
• Think  about this one carefully people, think about it very carefully.
• If  Damascus or Tehran should suddenly turn into heat and light any time  soon, the Israelis will instantly get the blame, in the first place  because of their leaked high-profile threats, and secondly because of  their known hatred of anything even remotely related to Islam or Arabs.
• We did not have very long to wait for this “on the record”  deniability statement, which was issued less than 24-hours after the  initial threats.
• Former Israeli deputy defence minister Efraim Sneh claimed on Army Radio  that, “Anyone with even the slightest understanding of missiles knows  that the Harpoon can never be used to carry nuclear warheads”.
• This  was swiftly reinforced by Ted Hooton, editor of Jane's  Naval Weapon Systems in London,  who agreed with Sneh’s assessment, saying problems with payload weight  would put the Harpoon out of balance, limiting its range and accuracy,  "It seems to me that a nuclear weapon, which is extremely dense,  would make the Harpoon nose heavy and significantly reduce its range —  in any event well below the (150 kilometers) it is designed for,"  he said.
• While  many might doubt the authenticity of Sneh’s claim, who would dare  question the measured opinion of Jane’s,  widely touted as the most authoritative military publication on earth?
• Unfortunately Jane’s  appears to have made a terrible error, because Hooton’s claim is the  exact opposite of reality.
• Harpoon normally carries a 215-pound  conventional explosive charge in its warhead, which can easily be  replaced by a 99.2-pound nuclear device, which then needs additional  ballast to balance the missile in flight!           
• Rest assured that the American-Israeli Harpoons are nuclear, and the  Zionists have every intention of using them on Tehran and Damascus if  they think they can get away with it.
• Dangerous people do dangerous  things in dangerous times, and there is nothing more dangerous that a  pack of religious fanatics with their backs to the Mediterranean, facing  the imminent destruction of Zion.

• Detectable by radar, cruising relatively high at around 300 feet  altitude, and with a range of only 65 miles, the Harpoon can be  terminated by one of many different point defense systems. But  regardless of these notable shortcomings, and as previously stated, some  will reach their targets in Damascus or Tehran.
• And  that, ladies and gentlemen, is when the real fireworks will start.
• Within seconds the tarpaulins will be thrown back on a number of 40’  flatbed trucks currently dispersed in classified locations,   revealing the dull metal of the 37’ Sunburn launch tubes within.

• During September, the Chinese missile  destroyer “Fuzhou” fired a Sunburn with a practice warhead, which  high-speed cameras then recorded striking the center of the white cross  on the hull of the target vessel, located more than 60 nautical miles  away from the firing point.
• Terminal attack profile was Mach 2.05 at an  altitude of 22 feet.             
• These exercises took place while the Zionist media was hyping up public  opinion against that nasty “Rogue State” North Korea, allegedly  brimming with fictional “Weapons of Mass Destruction” being  manufactured specifically for sale to Iran, or so you were led to  believe by CNN, NBC, Fox News and many others.
• In turn, Iran was  allegedly itching to mount the fictional weapons on multiple launchers,  then  fire the lot at poor little Israel, all alone and unarmed at  the eastern end of the Mediterranean.
• Plans were made to intercept  Korean ships on the high seas for inspection, and Australia obsequiously  offered to send a gunboat. But then Australia always offers to send a  gunboat when a lowly clerk in the White House snaps his or her fingers.
• Those  readers with long memories will recall that the Korean War of the  fifties was all about spheres of influence. In other words the Korean  War was a surrogate war, with America and Britain backing the south  while Russia and China backed the north.
• Though sixty years have passed  since the end of the Korean War, this proxy position has not changed,  and North Korea is still viewed by Russia and China as firmly within  their spheres of influence. Thus the diplomatic signal generated by the  large Russian and Chinese naval exercises was clear and unambiguous:  “Hands off North Korea, or else!”
• Within days of the Chinese Sunburn  launch, which was observed and logged by two American spy planes,  Washington went uncharacteristically quiet about the Korean peninsula,  and remains so today.
• Perhaps for the first time in contemporary American history, Washington  was being forced to come to grips with a new and very harsh reality.
• Though the United States was allowed [in fact discreetly encouraged] to  become horribly bogged down in Afghanistan and Iraq, it was no longer  allowed to interfere anywhere else in the world.

• Massive American  aircraft carriers were no longer free to roam around looking for  helpless prey, and Russia or China, sometimes both in tandem, started  riding shotgun on all American adventures in the Eastern Hemisphere.
• Effectively denied sea [and most land] access to the Eastern Hemisphere,  it was not long before the Zionists decided to play what they thought  was their trump card, declaring that their absolute right of self-defence  allowed them to launch Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles [ICBMs] of  sixties vintage, against “terrorist targets” on the other side of  the world.
• Though such weapons might appear to have the advantage of not  needing direct sea or land access in the Eastern Hemisphere, this  twisted Zionist thinking was quickly proved to be panicky and entirely  delusional.
• On 17  October 2003, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to this crude  threat, pointing out that although Russia had scrapped hundreds of its  ICBMs under various disarmament treaties, it still has a  "significant amount" of SS-19 intercontinental ballistic  missiles that had never been previously deployed, and thus were not part  of disarmament negotiations, which remain mothballed for emergency use.
• “These are the most powerful rockets in the world”, Putin said,  adding they would be the perfect weapons for breaking through any  potential American missile defense shield.  Unconfirmed rumor  suggests that Russia has a minimum of two hundred unused SS-19s in  storage.
• Within 48-hours of this stern Russian warning, frantic Zionist  talk of firing ICBMs at “terrorist targets” in the Eastern  Hemisphere became muted, then stopped completely.
• Just  one week later on 24 October, President Putin redefined the limits of  American access in the Eastern Hemisphere when he opened a new Russian  air base at Kant in Kyrgyzstan, just twenty miles to the east of a  rented American base at Manas, used for supporting “counter  terrorist” operations in Afghanistan.
• And while a squadron of  cutting-edge Russian Sukhoi 27 multi-role aircraft screamed overhead  performing complex aerobatics at the opening ceremony, the Chinese  quietly moved a squadron of  their own Sukhoi 27s up to Kashi air  base, which is the closest airfield to their own border with Kyrgyzstan.
• Completely coincidental timing of course, and anyone who suggests  otherwise will be labeled a “conspiracy theorist” by CNN, NBC, Fox  News and many others.             
• Appreciating that his opposite number in America is intellectually  challenged, Vladimir Putin said a few words at the opening ceremony  designed to be catchy enough to reach the frontal lobes of President  Bush’s brain:  "By building up an aviation shield in  Kyrgyzstan”, he said,  “we aim to strengthen the security of  this region, whose stability is an increasingly significant  factor."
• Vladimir Putin went on to  emphasize that Kant air  base was now, "a deterrent for terrorists and extremists of ALL  kinds".
• A master of understatement, Putin failed to mention that  the Sukhoi 27s assigned to Kant, and landing on the runway in front of  him as he spoke, were all equipped with distinctive Sunburn centerline  mounts. Presumably the Chinese jets at Kashi are similarly equipped.
• The  gloves were off, and with American and Israel still unable to steal any  oil from Iraq because someone keeps blowing the pipelines, this Russian  and Chinese firepower buildup suddenly slammed the door firmly shut on  Caspian oil reserves in the old Soviet republics.
• For more than a decade  American oil multinationals have been conducting “joint ventures” in  the former Soviet republics bordering the Caspian Sea, with the stated  intent of pumping this stolen crude oil out through Turkey, then on to  western markets.
• Now this route has been blocked permanently, and  America is in no position to do anything about it, because a large part  of the U.S. conventional army is currently bogged down in Iraq, being  shot at and killed on a daily basis.             
• In terms of protecting Eastern Hemisphere oil reserves from the Zionist  crusaders, Russia still had one more hurdle to clear, in the form of  Moscow-based Zionist Jew Mikhail Khodorkovsky. When the Soviet Union  collapsed in 1991, Khodorkovsky acted as the principal Zionist front  man, grabbing cheap oil assets in rigged auctions.
• In 1995 he pulled the  same trick again, rigging an auction at which he paid a mere $200  million for Yukos, a  Russian oil major worth at least $14 billon.
• Control of Yukos made Khodorkovsky very dangerous to Russian national  security, because the company controls nearly two thirds of Russia’s  strategic oil pipelines, including most of those feeding Eastern Europe.
• Russia is now the second-largest oil producer in the world, and  Khodorkovsky’s actions prove he intended to exploit this, by selling  51% of Yukos to  ExxonMobil, America’s largest oil multinational.  In turn, this would have placed Russian crude oil reserves under direct  Zionist control, a situation the Kremlin was not prepared to tolerate.
• Mikhail Khodorkovsky was arrested while en-route to the Russian Far  East, though rumor suggests he knew about the plan to arrest him, and  actually intended to flee the country via Vladivostok.
• A spokesman for  Yukos said that government security agents rushed Khodorkovsky's private  jet at 5am on Saturday during a refuelling stop in Siberia, shouting,  "Weapons on the floor or we'll shoot."
• Khodorkovsky  initially faces seven charges including fraud and tax evasion, with  possible [consecutive] jail sentences of up to forty years. It could get  far worse if prosecutors add the charge of treason, for undermining  Russian national security.
• Within hours of Khodorkovsky’s arrest, the Zionist media went berserk,  stating that the arrest would “damage investor confidence” in  Russia, and further claiming that, “without new investors, Russia will  be in big economic trouble”. This is garbage, because Russia is now  the second largest producer of oil in the world, and has eager buyers  for all of its oil products. About the last thing Russia needs or wants  today,  is a pack of Zionist “investors” trying to skim their  traditional 10% off Russia’s oil profits.
• Back in 1989, General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev sold Russia  and its peoples to the Zionists in return for two gold American Express  cards and unlimited free shopping for his wife on Fifth Avenue. During  the years that followed, Russians underwent almost unbelievable  hardships, with old age pensions vanishing into thin air [or into a New  York Zionist bank], and starvation became quite common in the provinces.
•   In  slightly more than a single decade, Russia ’s fortunes have come full  circle.
• Russians fared no better under “democratic” Boris Yeltsin, but  Vladimir Putin is an entirely different matter.
• In just a few short  years as President of Russia, Putin has turned everything upside down,  and probably set in train the final destruction of Zionist influence  worldwide.

• As the global economic collapse moves into mid-phase  two events have largely escaped the public's attention.

• The first event: The Telegraph (of London) reported on  the 12th of September that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)  nuclear experts now believe that 50 to 60 tons of uranium have "gone  missing" from the Iranian uranium enrichment plant at Isfahan.
• The  uranium removed was in gas form ~ UF6. This is sufficient, if enriched  to weapons grade level, to produce five to six atom bombs.
• The second event: The United States has agreed to sell  to Israel 1,000 of the very advanced bunker buster GBU-39 bombs.
• This is  a major development as the Bush Administration had denied previous recent  Israeli requests for large numbers of this weapon system.
• The GBU-39 has  a stand off range of 110 km and uses pop-out wings with extremely accurate  fire and forget technology. It is capable of penetrating 90 cm of streel  reinforced concrete.
• The combination of these two events indicates that the  Isreali Government has succeeded in its request that America allow it to  attack Iranian nuclear facilities.
• The large amount of "missing UF6"  was the fianl straw that allowed Israeli war leaders to convince Bush to  'green light' the coming Middle Eastern War with Iran, Syria and Lebanon.

• The Israeli political landscape is about to change.
• I  have been expecting former Israeli Prime Minister, and super war hawk,  Benyamin Netanyahu to make a well timed major move. Current Israeli Prime  Minister Ehud Olmert is about to resign due to his ongoing criminal troubles.  Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz are in  a tight battle to win the vote on Wednesday as Kadima Party Chairman, with  the right to attempt to form a new government.
• However, it appears that  Bibi Netanyahu has put together a deal with Labor Party leader, former  PM and current Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and the ultra-religious Shas  Party to form a government with Bibi as Prime Minister in a few days time.
• Count on Bibi Netanyahu lighting a blowtorch in the dry  kindling that is the Middle East.
• There is a real technical question if the GBU-39 can  destroy all of the key known or suspected Iranian nuclear sites, as well  as key sites in Lebanon and Syria. The hardest sites are very well protected.
• Some experts think that several dozen to a hundred plus GBU-39s targeted  at the same spot can take out even the deepest/most harden site; others  say that a micro or mini nuke will be required.
• The Israeli and American war planners may be counting  on all sides refraining from the use of WMD. Rather like Saddam held back  his 29 WMD armed (chemical and anthrax) Scud-type guided missiles during  the First Gulf War and like Hezbollah did during the Second Lebanon War  in 2006. If this is the strategy it is one very, very, massive risk to  all involved.
• An effective attack on the Iranian nuclear program and  likely hidden sites will require a massive number of air strikes over the  Iranian land mass.
• Iran will respond with missile attacks from its territory  on Israel and with rocket and missile attacks from Lebanon and Gaza and  the West Bank.
• Israel has tried very hard to convince Syria to part company  with Iran but has had little success. Syria has a large number of guided  missiles that can reach virtually all parts of Isreal.
• While the American supplied Israeli weapons, and the  Isreali produced guided missiles, are highly accurate the Iranian/Syrian  guided missiles are not so accurate (and the many tens of thousands of  unguided rockets in Lebanon and Guza/West Bank are notoriously inaccurate).
• This means that Israeli civilians will be hit hard if only non-WMD warheads  are used.
• The temptation for Israel to hit back at Iranian and Syrian population  centers will be very high. If it happens the cycle of escalation and counter-escalation  will likely get out of control; and this is assuming that major efforts  will be made to avoid mutual use of WMD in the first place.
• Israel has most likely over 600 nuclear warheads from  micro nukes to high mega tonnage hydrogen bombs, as well as advanced biological  weapons, chemical weapons, radiological weapons, and fuel air explosive  based weapons.
• The Iranian/Syrian side has radiological weapons, fuel air  weapons, chemical weapons, advanced biological weapons, and maybe a crude  nuclear device or two (doubtful but a remote possibility).
• The Iranians have made it clear that they will close  the Gulf to oil shipping in the event of a war. Americans have just had  a taste of $5/gallon gasoline with Hurrican Ike.
• A general Middle East  War could bring $10/per gallon gas prices to America.
• The world's economy,  already headed to a global depression, will be thrust into the worst depression  in human history.

• In any case, any closing of the Gulf will bring a massive  American and allied response making the Middle East War a likley global  one as massive US/allied air attacks and naval attacks plummet Iran well  beyond what Israel began.
• If Iran feels that its population is seruously in danger  or that its existance as a nation state is at risk, she is apt to use her  strategic MAD (mutually assured destruction) force WMD (weapons of mass  destruction) on the west and Israel.

• The delegation of more than a dozen chiefs of police from major cities across the United States is visiting Israel as part of weeklong mission organized by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
• The program brings the U.S. law enforcement officers into contact with Israeli law enforcement and security officers and terrorism experts to learn about Israel's strategies to prevent terror attacks.
• They see firsthand how Israeli emergency officials and responders prepare for terrorist attacks in a nation that can never let down its guard.
• "There is a lot to learn from Israel's approach to countering terrorism, and we believe that it is a wonderful opportunity for police chiefs from the United States to understand how Israel stands up to the threat everyday," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.
• "The lesson of 9/11 is that we can never let down our guard, and that police and others in the law enforcement community must have the tools of the trade and the knowledge of what strategies are available out there to help deter the threat of terrorism."
• On September 10, the U.S. police chiefs observed a training exercise involving an Israeli police counterterrorism SWAT Team in Holon, near Tel Aviv.

• Israel's policy has been to take a soft line with Moscow, agreeing to many of its requests, in efforts to persuade the Russians not to provide the Jewish state's neighbor, Syria, with arms or to help with Iran's Bushehr nuclear project, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
• Israel also had sought to placate Russia by halting its experts' advisory work in Georgia, because of the military conflict between Russia and Georgia with the goal of protecting a growing Jewish population in Russia, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
• The accommodating position, however, soon may be a former policy because of Russia's plans to base its naval fleet in Syria and its construction of spy stations along the border with Israel.
• Moscow has insisted that any weapons it sells to Syria and Iran are defensive.
• According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Moscow is supplying the Syrians only with "defensive weapons which are not breaking the regional balance of power."
• But Israel may be hardening its position due to what Israeli diplomats see as a failure to achieve their goals in the face of Russia reasserting its power, especially in the Middle East.
• Israeli President Shimon Peres has warned that sending new weapons to Syria "would endanger peace in the world, not only in the Middle East."
• A senior foreign ministry official said Russia's "forceful return on the international stage doesn't guarantee in any way it will have a constructive role in the future of the Middle East."
• Russia and Israel had been developing a closeness in culture and tourism in recent years, mostly because of a large influx of Jewish émigrés from the former Soviet Union who grew nostalgic for Russia once in Israel.
• The relations had been improving steadily since the fall of the Soviet Union, even though Tel Aviv has opposed many of Moscow's diplomatic efforts that are at variance with Israel.

• This equals detecting an Iranian Shehab-3 ballistic missile 5.5 minutes after its launch, which means that it is picked up halfway on its 11-minute flight from Iran to bomb targets in Israel, adding precious minutes to Israel’s response time for incoming missile attacks.
• Israel has furthermore been given improved access to US satellites capable of identifying missiles at the instant of their launch. Israel will now be directly linked to the satellites - albeit through the US Joint Tactical Ground Station – JTAGS in Europe.
• Commenting on the FBX radar deployment, a Pentagon source said: First, we want to put Iran on notice that we’re bolstering our capabilities throughout the region, and especially in Israel. But just as important, we’re telling the Israelis, ‘Calm down; behave. We’re doing all we can to stand by you and strengthen defenses.’”

• Israel will have no direct access to the data collected by the radar, which looks like a giant taco. It will only be fed intelligence second hand, on a need-to-know basis, from the Americans — unless the radar picks up an immediate, direct attack on Israel, Israeli sources claim.

• When the U.S. stationed anti-missile radar and interceptor systems in Poland and the Czech Republic — ostensibly directed at a future Iranian threat, although the Russians believe their own missile capability is its real target — Moscow warned those countries that the move could result in their being added to the target list of Russia's missiles.
• Israeli military sources say that Barak requested the radar from U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in July, after U.S. requests to station such a system in Turkey and Jordan were rejected.
• Barak was eager to acquire the advantage of the early warning that the system would provide in the event of a possible Iranian attack.
• But with the Russians already peeved at Israel for having had military advisers inside Georgia when war broke out over South Ossetia, the radar's deployment in Israel, say officials, might make Moscow even more likely to supply Iran and Syria with its highly-accurate SA300 anti-aircraft missile batteries.
• The top-secret X-band radar will be staffed by around 120 American technicians and security guards in the Negev, say Israeli military sources.
• But Israeli planning and air force officials are perturbed that Defense Minister Barak did not carry out any evaluation og the radar's possible impact on Israeli military operations before approving it.
• For one thing, Israeli defense experts are worried that waves from the X-band radar might throw off the accuracy of a new Gil anti-tank missile also being tested in the Negev.
• "The Bush Administration is in the mood to give us anything, as long as we don't attack Iran," gripes one senior official. "So why did we take this radar?"

• U.S. Radar in Israel: What's it For, Really? (Updated)

• A few weeks back, the U.S. Army's European Command set up an early-warning radar system in Israel. It's ostensible purpose is to boost defenses against Iranian missiles.
• But Entropic Memes wonders whether there isn't something more to this radar than meets the eye.
• The AN/TPY-2 radar is one of the "key component[s]" in the "American Forward-Based Radar global missile-defense system," Entropic Memes notes.
• And it has a huge range -- about 2000 kilometers, by some estimates.
• Placed in Israel, the radar could watch over most of Iran. But it also covers a broad swath of the Middle East and the Caucasus, too.
• Plus, EM observes, "you can’t help but wonder why the system wasn’t installed in Iraq, or better yet Afghanistan." That "would ensure full coverage of Iran - and, in the case of Afghanistan, provide coverage of Pakistan as well."
• What's more, the system in Israel is quite similar to the radar that the U.S. wanted so badly to install in the Czech Republic earlier this year, as part of its larger missile defense shield.
• Could this be another attempt, to piece together that regional defense? Victoria Samson, with the Center for Defense Information, believes it might.
• "It was sold to the Israelis as something that could feed information into their system about incoming Iranian missiles," she writes. "But I would argue its primary purpose is to be part of the U.S. missile defense system in Europe."
• CIA veteran Allen Thomson is "not convinced," however. Israel Negev desert "is marginal as a site to provide coverage of Iranian launches to the north, particularly if you factor in earth curvature and the altitude missiles launched from Iran would have to get to to break the radar's horizon.
• The Caucasus or even eastern Turkey would be much better," he tells DANGER ROOM.
• Thomson adds, "That said, I agree that very careful (meaning quantitative) scrutiny should be given to this deployment to see if it makes sense in terms of its claimed purpose. Or in terms of other, unclaimed purposes."
• UPDATE: Be careful about those radar range estimates, former Air Force officer Brian Weeden counsels. They vary quite a bit.
• First, range is function of the power of the radar.  Modern phased arrays are made of a number of smaller transmit/receive elements, often times hundreds or thousands depending on the size of the radar face and the width of the radar beam (a function of the frequency).  The total power (and thus range) of the radar depends on how many of these elements you pack into the face.  There's a huge difference in capability between a fully populated array and one that's only 10% populated, and it looks like MDA isn't going to have nearly the money or manufacturing capacity to fully populate the elements either the Israel or Czech radar (10 to 25% populated is more likely).
• Second, effective tracking range of a radar is dependent on the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of the object it is trying to track (which is partly dependent on the frequency of the radar).  This makes sense - the more radar reflective an object is, the more energy it will reflect back to the receiver and thus less power is needed to track it.  So whenever someone gives you the "effective range" of a radar, you always need to ask "against what size target?"  And here once again MDA isn't really being completely honest.  The stated ranges for the Israel and Czech (and Sea Based X-band for that matter) are against 1 meter RCS targets.  Unfortunately, their primary target - nuclear warheads in flight - are much smaller than that in the frequency the are using, typically about 0.1 meter RCS.
• Bottom line? Read the fine print before believing any of these range estimates.
